I had an appointment in Gangnam and wanted a proper meal with rice and warm soup, so I stopped by 1992 Deopbap & Jjageuli Gangnam Main Branch. There are plenty of pasta places and meat restaurants around, but sometimes a full Korean spread with real side dishes is exactly what hits the spot.

Where is 1992 Deopbap & Jjageuli Gangnam Main Branch, and what are its hours?

1992 Deopbap & Jjageuli Gangnam Main Branch sits in the alley between Exit 3 and Exit 4 of Gangnam Station. Head into the alley and you'll spot the tiled-eave roofline and lit-up sign right away. It stands out with a bit of a hanok (traditional Korean house) feel wedged between the buildings, so it was easy to find even from a distance.

Outdoor tables and the delivery-and-takeout window

There were a few small outdoor tables set up right by the entrance. They looked pretty pleasant to sit at on a cool day, and each table had its own light, which gave the evening a nice little mood.

Delivery and takeout orders are handled at a separate window off to the side. Delivery riders don't have to pass through the dining area, so the flow felt clean and well separated from the seating.

Can you eat alone here? Seating and the folding-screen interior

Once inside, the restaurant turned out to stretch further back than I expected. There are lots of 2-person tables and a few spots that looked comfortable for eating alone, so it seemed like an easy option for a solo meal near Gangnam Station or a weekday lunch for office workers. Even with a decent crowd at dinner time, the aisles stayed tidy so it never felt cramped.

The walls are lined with folding screens painted with flowers and birds, paired with wood and stone-textured materials. It had that clean, modern-Korean-restaurant look but with a touch of an old-school Jeonju hanjeongsik (Korean table d'hôte) restaurant mixed in, which I found kind of fun.

Under the warm lighting, the colors on the folding screens weren't too loud and blended nicely with the overall mood. I thought this would be a good spot to bring a foreign friend for Korean food in Gangnam — you get to show off the space as much as the food.

What you'll find at the self-serve corner

The self-serve corner had water and paper cups, of course, but also candy, mouthwash, and wet wipes — all the little things you want after a meal. It's a small thing, but it's honestly pretty convenient when you're heading out after something spicy haha.

The full tray: meat set, kimchi jjigae and steamed egg

That night I ordered the meat set along with kimchi jjigae and gyeranjjim (steamed egg). Everything came out at once on a large wooden tray — the main meat dish, the stew, the steamed egg, kimchi and pickles — so it felt filling from the moment the table was set.

How was the meat set?

The meat was grilled in big, bite-sized pieces, served together with onion, potato, kkwari-gochu (shishito-style peppers), and sausage. The meat had nice char marks that gave it a savory edge, and the sweetness of the onion plus the fragrance of the peppers kept it from getting monotonous. The lean meat wasn't dry and had a good bit of chew to it, and picking at the sausage and potato in between was its own little pleasure.

Kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew)

The kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) had big chunks of tofu, and the broth's deep color alone made me want more rice. One spoonful brought the tang and heat of the kimchi first, then left a lingering savory depth from the broth. Taking a bite of meat and then a spoonful of the warm stew — this combination is hard to mess up in Korean food.

Gyeranjjim (steamed egg)

The gyeranjjim (steamed egg) came in a bowl too big to just call a side dish. The surface was soft and the inside stayed moist, so it was great to scoop up with a big spoonful while still hot. It wasn't seasoned too strongly, which meant it also did a good job of softening the spiciness of the kimchi jjigae.

Side dishes, sauces and the verdict on 1992 Deopbap & Jjageuli

The standard side dishes were kimchi, dried radish, and pickles, plus two types of sauce to go with the meat. Eating the meat plain, then dipping it lightly in sauce, then adding a bite of pickle — each combination changed the flavor enough that I cleared the plate fast.

This is a solid spot to enjoy a hot, filling Korean meal right in the middle of Gangnam, whether you're alone or with someone. With plenty of menu options, it works well for a quick lunch or a slower dinner over stew and meat. If you're near Gangnam Station craving a rice bowl, jjageuli, or a hearty meat set, give 1992 Deopbap & Jjageuli Gangnam Main Branch a try :)
