Suwon chicken restaurant holiday rush for jujube herbal chicken
In short
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant in front of the main gate of Hwaseong Haenggung, near the main square of Haenggung-dong in Suwon. Over a holiday the writer barely squeezed into the Hwaseong Haenggung roadside public parking lot, walked in just after 5pm to a full house, and ordered the hanbang (herbal) oak-fired chicken for two with a rice cake add-on: chicken sizzling on the hot plate, sticky rice nurungji (crisp scorched rice) underneath, and a roasted jujube to finish. For anyone who wants a light whole chicken that sits easily, Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is a 200% return visit.

Today I'm bringing you a review of 'Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak,' a place I ate at while out in Haenggung-dong and left really satisfied.
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is located near the main square of Haenggung-dong, and it took us about... 1 minute? to walk there from the Hwaseong Haenggung roadside public parking lot. Since it was a holiday, we barely managed to park after waiting in line ㅜㅜ

Where is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak? Right by the Hwaseong Haenggung main gate
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak sits in a spot you can see the moment you turn south from Hwaseong Haenggung's main gate. This is 'Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak,' the place that's going to change the paradigm of fried Suwon chicken.
There are plenty of pretty cafés and aesthetic restaurants in Haenggung-dong, but sometimes you just crave a properly oak-fire-roasted whole chicken like this, you know? The result: a total success! I fell completely for the flavor and had to write this post fast.

If you turn south from Hwaseong Haenggung's main gate, there's a poster hanging up for the oak-fire roasting place that anyone can spot.

There's a big pile of oak logs stacked in front of the restaurant. The scent of oak wraps around the whole area.

What does the oak-fired whole chicken look like?
🪵 Full of oak aroma, a golden-brown roasted look. Even near the entrance of Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, that savory, deep wood-fire aroma hit my nose.
Because they roast the chicken slowly over oak logs, letting the fat drip out, the outside looked crispy while the inside looked moist — an absolutely artistic visual. Chickens working hard on the rotisserie bars, sweating away haha.

Full house at 5pm: why arriving early was the right call
Just past 5pm and it's already full haha. Good thing we rushed to get here early.

Since chicken is the main menu here, there are lots of chicken illustrations hanging on the walls.

What two people ordered: herbal oak-fired chicken plus rice cake
The two of us ordered the essential hanbang jangjak tongdak with an added rice cake option.

I could see the draft beer dispenser way in the back ㅜㅜ I really, REALLY wanted to drink a Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer, but because I was driving ㅜㅜ, zero-sugar cola it was ㅜㅜ
On the hot plate: chicken, sticky rice and rice cake together
♨️ A fantastic layered dish sizzling on the hot plate! When our ordered chicken finally arrived, sizzling as it appeared on the hot plate, my mouth started watering from that very moment.
The real value of this place lies in the combination of chicken + sticky rice + rice cake!

Crisp, juicy chicken and the sizzling sauce
With the fat rendered out, the meat was light yet the inner flesh held onto its juices, never dry, wonderfully tender. Thanks to the faint hanbang (herbal medicine) aroma and the oak smoke, it kept tasting good bite after bite without getting old.
And that sizzling sauce is absolutely bomb. It's tasty on its own, but dipping the chicken meat into that sauce is next level.

Sticky rice nurungji on the hot plate
The sticky rice inside the chicken's cavity, cooked over hot wood fire using the chicken's own broth, is already delicious on its own — but placed under the chicken and meeting the hot plate, it slowly turns into crispy nurungji, and that's truly a special treat! Chewy yet crispy and savory, I kept reaching for more.
The sticky rice and rice cake are getting nicely roasted.

The sticky rice turned into nurungji — this is basically cheating, it's so good.
The chewy rice cake add-on
The rice cake, roasted just right by the hot plate's heat, blends beautifully with the sauce and chicken fat, playing its role as a special treat perfectly.

Golden-brown roasted rice cake, a real flavor bomb.

Soft and chewy chicken thigh meat

Moist and tender chicken breast meat

A jujube roasted together as a sort of dessert. Even this is delicious haha.
Verdict and tips for visiting Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak
💡 Unlike regular chicken with its greasy fried coating, Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is light and easy on the stomach, making it so nice to enjoy without any guilt. The lightness of the chicken itself, the savory hot-plate sticky rice, and the chewy rice cake all came together in perfect harmony — a real find.
Highly recommend it as a course for a date or a hangout with friends in Haenggung-dong! If you want to try a proper hanbang jangjak tongdak in Haenggung-dong, be sure to stop by!
- Recommended points: crispy chicken skin, the sticky rice nurungji layered under the hot plate, the light herbal flavor!
