Suwon takeout chicken stuffed with chestnut rice: Haenggung Jangjak
In short
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired herbal chicken restaurant near the main square in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. For a dinner with her parents, the writer picked up the traditional seasoned oak-fired chicken with an added sausage on a takeout reservation, and the shop packed plenty of cabbage pickles as well. Even the breast meat stayed moist and the bird was full of glutinous rice with chestnuts and mushrooms, so parents who dislike sweet flavors finished it happily.

Chicken Princess is back with another chicken review! Today, unlike usual, it's not fried chicken — it's herbal chicken roasted over an oak wood fire!
Mom and Dad and I decided to have chicken for dinner, and I figured roasted chicken would suit my parents better than fried, so I headed to Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak (행궁장작한방통닭) in Haenggung-dong!

Where is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, and where do you park?
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is located near the main square of Haenggung-dong. I parked at Hwaseong Haenggung Roadside Public Parking Lot and it took me about 3 minutes to walk over.
You can spot the place from far away, haha — the burning oak wood fire is super visible even from a distance, and it looked pretty cool for some reason!

The 1st-floor folding-door terrace and the hidden inner room
All the customers were on what looked like the terrace side, so I couldn't get a photo, but the 1st floor has folding doors so you can enjoy your meal with an outdoor-seating kind of feel!
Honestly, when I first walked in I thought, 'oh, it's not as big as I expected,' but it turned out there's a hidden space tucked inside, haha. In weather like this you can enjoy chimaek (chicken and beer) at the window terrace seats with that outdoor vibe, and on hotter or colder days you could comfortably eat in the inner seats.

2nd-floor window seats: is Haenggung Jangjak good for groups?
After seeing the 1st floor with its inner space, I thought, 'oh it's bigger than I thought,' but wow — the 2nd floor had even more spacious seating prepared! This would be really great for booking as a group.
When a restaurant has a separate 2nd floor, requesting extra small plates and things can sometimes take a while, but at Hanbang Tongdak, everything customers might need was fully stocked upstairs too.
Even better, the window seats had floor-to-ceiling glass, so the pretty, charming alleyways of Haenggung-dong came into full view. As it gets colder, outdoor seating can get tricky, but with a window-front space like this you can still enjoy chimaek in a great atmosphere. Chimaek usually makes me think of summer, but somehow Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak felt like it has even more charm in winter, haha.

Choosing the traditional seasoned oak-fired chicken
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak's menu has this variety of herbal roasted chickens and a few sides. Today I was craving something spicy and torn between the fire chicken and the traditional seasoning, but since I was eating with my parents, I ordered the traditional seasoned oak-fired chicken as takeout!
Quite a few customers were dining in, and a lot of them were eating the corn cheese and the plain herbal chicken! The corn cheese gratin seasoned oak-fired chicken looked so delicious in person, haha.

For dine-in customers, water and extra side dishes and small plates were set up by the counter! I tried some of those cabbage pickle things too, since they packed extras for me, and the tangy flavor went perfectly with the chicken, haha.

Seeing the Kirin Ichiban draft beer poster on the wall made me crave chimaek so badly, haha. Among draft beers, I like Kirin just as much as Asahi... I definitely want to come back and enjoy it on the terrace sometime. This time I drove so I got it packed to eat at home, but next time I really want to try the corn cheese gratin chicken with Kirin draft, haha.

How long is the wait with a takeout reservation in Haenggung-dong?
I made a takeout reservation in advance, so I waited less than 5 minutes to get my order. They kindly packed as many chopsticks as I needed, and thanks to the quick prep, I got home faster and could enjoy the chicken sooner, haha.

The packed chicken came with salt, sauce, and mustard sauce, and since I mentioned how good the cabbage pickles looked and asked for extra, they very kindly gave me an extra portion, haha. The packaging was in surprisingly nice containers, which felt great, and I think it helped the chicken stay warmer for longer!

What my parents thought of the herbal chicken stuffed with glutinous rice
When I opened up the takeout box, there was a beautifully shaped seasoned roast chicken sprinkled generously with nuts, haha. The added sausage was plump and looked so delicious too!

Even the parts of the chicken that can be dry were super moist and tender! And the seasoning — even my parents, who don't like sweet flavors, ate it up saying it was delicious.
Since it's herbal chicken, the inside was packed with glutinous rice stuffed with chestnuts, mushrooms, and other healthy ingredients, and my mom loved it! She kept asking where I got it, saying she'd never seen chicken like this before, haha.
