Suwon terrace chimaek and perilla buckwheat noodles: Haenggung Jangjak
In short
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant directly in front of Hwaseong Haenggung palace in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. On the way out after a loop around the palace, the writer took an open terrace seat and ordered the Suwon wang-galbi oak-fired chicken for 25,000 won, the fragrant perilla oil buckwheat noodles (makguksu) for 15,000 won, and a draft beer for 5,000 won. The tender chicken on the hot stone plate, with the nurungji (scorched rice) spread underneath, was the most memorable part of the meal.

Today I went to Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, a famous old-style whole chicken place in Suwon, and had the most delicious wang-galbi chicken. 😋

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired chicken place right in front of Hwaseong Haenggung in Haenggung-dong, Suwon! I was in Suwon after a long while and had just walked a full loop around Hwaseong Haenggung when, on the way out, I spotted this oak-fired chicken place that looked so good I had to go in. >.<

What are the terrace seats like?
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak has terrace seats, and that day there happened to be one open, so we sat there. The weather's been so nice lately that I've been insisting on terrace seats everywhere I go, and here too there was an open one!! My husband and I are both terrace-seat fanatics, so we went straight over and sat down. Haha.
The vibe is really great. >.< You can see the whole chickens turning and roasting over oak fire outside like that~~ How could you just walk past that~~~~~

Draft beer for 5,000 won and the full order

You can't have oak-fired chicken without beer~~~~~~! They had draft beer, so I ordered it. >.< I haven't seen 500cc draft go for ₩5,000 much these days ㅠㅠ so the price here really won me over. ♥

<What we ordered> Suwon wang-galbi oak-fired chicken ₩25,000 / fragrant perilla oil buckwheat noodles ₩15,000 / draft beer ₩5,000

How the Suwon wang-galbi oak-fired chicken tastes
Wow, the visual........♥ It came out sizzling on a hot stone plate, so we could eat it piping hot ㅠㅠ You know fried chicken and whole roast chicken (tongdak) are totally different dishes, right. This tongdak was overflowing with its own charm ㅠㅠ

When ordering, I agonized over the sauce — corn cheese gratin, seasoned, or wang-galbi!!! Seriously ㅋㅋㅋ I really went back and forth, then thought, we're in Suwon, let's try the wang-galbi! And it was a total success. ☆ If you're torn on flavor, just get the wang-galbi!!!!

Can you feel how tender this chicken is just from the photos..!!!! >.< Roasting it hard over oak fire made it turn out so soft and juicy!!! Eating it with the wang-galbi sauce made it taste even more amazing~~~

Nurungji and chestnuts under the chicken
And on top of that, there's nurungji (scorched rice) underneath the chicken... Isn't that perfect???? I actually shouted when I discovered the nurungji. There's a whole chestnut tucked in too, and the hot plate's heat makes the nurungji stick together chewily under the chicken, so if you tear off a bit of chicken meat and scrape it up together, it's absolute heaven ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Perilla oil buckwheat noodles as a side
The makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) we ordered as a side! >.< I made this a lot over summer, but eating it out is still the best. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ They gave a generous amount of perilla leaves and roasted seaweed flakes, which made it even more savory. I ate a bite of noodles here and there between bites of chicken, and it was fragrant, nutty, and just perfect. >.<

Is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak worth a visit?
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, a Suwon chicken restaurant!!! I walked in by chance, but I was shockingly won over by how delicious the wang-galbi oak-fired chicken was ㅠㅠ Customers kept streaming in the whole time we were eating, so it seems like this is already a well-known chicken place in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. If you're visiting Haenggung-dong in Suwon, take a walk around Hwaseong Haenggung first, then stop by Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak for a round of chimaek! >.<
