Gyudon dinner at a Gwangmyeong gyukatsu restaurant: Hoka Hoka

In short

Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is a new gyukatsu (fried beef cutlet) restaurant on Oriro in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, near Gwangmyeong City Hall and Cheolsan Station. At dinner the order was gyukatsu 130g for 19,000 won, gyudon (beef rice bowl) for 13,500 won and a Hoka Hoka crispy roll for 2,500 won, with fried sweet potato served free as a starter. Grilling the gyukatsu on the tabletop brazier was fun, but the gyudon ordered with no expectations was the bigger surprise.

I went to Cheolsan in Gwangmyeong for gyukatsu (fried beef cutlet) for dinner today. The vibe was great and the food was delicious, so let me tell you about my visit to Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch.

Where is Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch, the gyukatsu restaurant near Gwangmyeong City Hall?

Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is a newly opened gyukatsu restaurant at 887 Oriro, Unit 101, Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, near Gwangmyeong City Hall and Cheolsan Station. There are plenty of good restaurants around Gwangmyeong City Hall, but I was specifically looking for a gyukatsu place when I found this one.

It seems like a lot of office workers nearby would come here for lunch too, so we headed over for dinner with high expectations.

Outside the restaurant, there were photos of the dishes served at this Gwangmyeong Japanese restaurant, Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch. There were so many different options. We went in and ordered at the kiosk.

Besides gyukatsu, there was cold ramen, gyudon, and a bunch of other dishes.

There were a lot of customers so I couldn't get a shot of the tables, but there were bar-style seats too, which seemed great for solo diners. We ordered through the kiosk.

What we ordered at Hoka Hoka and what it cost

  • Gyukatsu 130g — ₩19,000
  • Gyudon — ₩13,500
  • Hoka Hoka crispy roll — ₩2,500

How the grill-it-yourself gyukatsu at Hoka Hoka tastes

After we ordered, the very first thing to come out was sweet potato fries. We hadn't ordered them, so I was confused at first — turns out they were a free service item. The crispy fries dipped in mayo were genuinely so good haha.

With fries this good, I couldn't help but wonder how good the main dish would be while we waited. To eat gyukatsu, you need a grill — they bring a stylish charcoal brazier with Japanese lettering right to your table.

They light the fire like this, and you grill the meat yourself on the metal plate on top — that's how you eat gyukatsu. The meat cooks fast, so it was easy to eat.

Once the grill is lit, the gyukatsu comes out. The bright red meat looked absolutely delicious.

You place the gyukatsu on the grill and cook it yourself — there's something fun about grilling the meat and watching it cook.

Once one side is done, you flip it and wait a bit more. The meat cooks quickly so it was easy to eat. There were three different sauces to choose from depending on your taste — if you like something sweet, I'd recommend the middle sauce.

Full spread of gyukatsu, rice, and miso soup

With the crispy-outside, juicy-inside gyukatsu, a whole bowl of rice disappeared in no time. The side miso soup had just the right broth — it felt like sipping a tasty 'tea' alongside the meal.

Why the 13,500-won gyudon stole the dinner

Next up was the gyudon (beef rice bowl) at ₩13,500. Since I'd gone in expecting to be wowed by the gyukatsu, I had no real expectations for the gyudon.

But wow — the gyudon was genuinely delicious. I've never had gyudon this good anywhere. I even ate all the lotus root, which I usually avoid. Mixed together properly, it's absolutely amazing. The gyudon was also loaded with meat, so I was fully satisfied.

Gyudon topped with plenty of green onion and meat

There was green onion too, and the meat was seasoned so well it was basically a rice thief. This place isn't just great for gyukatsu — the gyudon is a real winner too. It's genuinely one of the best Japanese restaurants in Gwangmyeong.
