Jeju City media art with touch-to-bloom flowers: Nohyeong Supermarket

On a Jeju trip, outdoor plans like the beach or oreum (volcanic cones) are great, but on a rainy day, a windy day, or when the midday sun feels like too much, it's nice to have an indoor spot lined up too.

This time I visited Nohyeong Supermarket in Jeju City! The name sounds like a neighborhood mart, but it's actually a media art exhibition space of about 1,200 pyeong filled with light, video, and music.

Everyone let out a big "whoaaa" when the space shifts from the black-and-white opening into a space bursting with intense color.

If you're looking for things to do in Jeju City that won't be affected much by weather, this is a good place to check out.

Where is Nohyeong Supermarket, and what does parking and admission cost?

Nohyeong Supermarket is located at 89 Noheong-ro, Jeju City, Jeju, about 15 minutes by car from Jeju Airport. We had eaten near the airport and looked for something fun to do nearby, and this is where we ended up.

There's a dedicated parking lot, so parking was easy.

Since Nohyeong Supermarket is on Noheong-ro in Jeju City, it's fairly easy to work into a trip built around Jeju Airport. If you're spending time in Jeju City on your first or last day like I did and want to fit in one indoor attraction, it works well for planning your route! Note that according to the official information, wheelchair and stroller access may be limited, so it's worth checking before you visit if you need it.

The 1981 story: a supermarket that lost its color, in black and white

The interesting thing about Nohyeong Supermarket is that it doesn't jump straight into the flashy video you usually picture with media art.

Walking in through the entrance, the color around you seems to drain away, like stepping into an old black-and-white screen. There's actually a little story hidden in this space.

The setup is that one day in 1981, a mysterious door opened at Nohyeong Supermarket and sucked away all the color from Jeju! So in the early section, even the supermarket's sign and goods are shown as having lost their color.

There are so many media art exhibitions these days that some start to feel similar, but this place had a distinct concept from the start — a "supermarket that lost its color" — and I loved that. It really felt like stepping inside a black-and-white TV!

The 20m-high video hall and flowers that bloom when you touch them

After the black-and-white section, the mood completely changes.

Nohyeong Supermarket has a large-scale media art space of about 4,000㎡, reaching a maximum height of about 20m.

Rather than breaking the space into small sections, it makes full use of the walls and floor, so the video fills your entire field of view.

It was much more fun to walk slowly through the space than to just stand still and watch.

Another highlight: touching the screen makes a flower bloom right away!

With media art spread across such a huge space, the atmosphere was great and it was genuinely fun — a perfect pick for an indoor date spot in Jeju.

Retro bag photo zone and the forest rooms at Nohyeong Supermarket

Nohyeong Supermarket isn't just the black-and-white exhibit and the giant screen. Heading further in, another round of media art unfolds.

There's a photo zone full of old-fashioned bags, and further on a forest-like atmosphere continues. Honestly every single corner here is a photo zone, so photos turned out great no matter where we shot.

For anyone looking for things to do in Jeju City to make memories, this is a great recommendation. Coming here on a date felt like it would make your love grow~~ I'll have to bring my (future) boyfriend here someday^.ㅠ

On the way out, we made the most of the café and souvenir shop too.
