A 5-minute walk from Hyeopjae Beach: seating and interior at Onjeong Jorim

Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch is a 5-minute walk from Hyeopjae Beach, so it was really easy to get to. Being so close to the beach made it a place you could just casually drop into for a meal.

The table spacing and seating setup felt generous — besides 4-person tables, there were also long tables where several people could sit together. It's a seating layout that works comfortably whether you're a couple or small family traveling, or a bigger group moving together.

The interior of Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch focused more on being clean and comfortable than flashy. Having high chairs on hand also felt like a thoughtful touch for customers with young kids. Since fish stew tends to be a family meal, the comfortable seating and generous space around each table made for an easy dining experience.

One nice thing about the interior at Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch was being able to enjoy the surrounding Jeju scenery through the window seats while eating.
Ordering the Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim and refilling side dishes at the self-serve bar
I ordered the Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim, which lets you try both the signature Jeju Manong Hairtail Jorim and Jeju Manong Mackerel Jorim (jorim = Korean braised stew) at once.

Basic side dishes were provided, and I could refill as much as I needed from the self-serve bar. The side dishes were neatly put together and fairly basic.

The Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim had a bit of a different appeal from a typical fish stew, since you get to enjoy hairtail and mackerel together. It's a dish where you get two distinct flavors in one pot.
How does the hairtail jorim taste?

The hairtail jorim was delicious, with a spicy chili-based sauce layered with savoriness and sweetness. The hairtail's naturally clean, subtly sweet flesh paired well with the spicy stew sauce and worked nicely over rice. You could really taste the fish's cleanness alongside the sauce's savory depth.

No fish jorim is complete without the braised radish, and the well-cooked radish here had soaked up the fish broth and seasoning for a really savory bite. It had a salty, subtly sweet flavor that paired nicely with the fish.
How does the mackerel jorim taste?

With the Jeju Manong Mackerel Jorim, once properly cooked, the mackerel flesh was soft yet noticeably firmer in texture than the hairtail. Scooped onto rice with a spoon, the flesh broke apart easily while still delivering that distinct nutty mackerel flavor.

The Jeju Manong Mackerel Jorim stood out for how well the rich, nutty mackerel flavor matched with the spicy stew sauce. It's a bold stew style built around eating it with rice. The stew broth alone can taste quite strong, but eaten together with rice, mackerel, and radish, the seasoning balanced out naturally.

If you like the strong flavor of mackerel and enjoy spicy, savory sauces, this dish should be very satisfying. Looking at Onjeong Jorim's menu, besides the Jeju Manong Mackerel Jorim there's also hairtail jorim made with Jeju silver hairtail, plus the mixed jorim combining both, so it was nice being able to pick based on preference. The Jeju Manong Mixed Jorim was a rice-side-dish-style stew brought to life with Jeju garlic and stew seasoning.

If you're looking for a good restaurant near Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju, I'd recommend visiting Onjeong Jorim, where you can try affordable hairtail jorim and mackerel jorim :)
