Why Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch for hairtail stew near Hyeopjae Beach?
Today I want to introduce a restaurant that made this Jeju trip a lot more satisfying. One of the must-eat dishes when you come to Jeju is galchi jorim (braised hairtail stew), right? But prices on Jeju have gone up so much lately that a full stew spread for two often starts at ₩70,000–80,000, and sometimes tops ₩100,000, which made me hesitate to go in a lot of the time.
Then while looking around near Hyeopjae Beach and Geumneung Beach, I found Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch. ~!

Inside Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch: seating and menu prices
Inside, the place was clean and really spacious.

The first thing that caught my eye when I walked in was the menu board on the wall. In this era of high prices, Jeju garlic hairtail stew (per person) is ₩15,000, and garlic mackerel stew and garlic mixed stew are the same at ₩15,000 per person. They also have grilled options — whole grilled hairtail (₩40,000) and grilled mackerel (₩15,000) — so if you're visiting with a group, it's a great lineup for mixing braised and grilled dishes.
There's a separate self-serve bar for extra side dishes.

I couldn't believe you could still get proper hairtail stew at this price on Jeju these days — the value was overwhelming. We didn't hesitate and ordered the signature dish, the Jeju Garlic Hairtail Stew.
What comes with the 15,000 won Jeju garlic hairtail stew?
After a short wait, neat side dishes arrived along with the main dish, the Jeju garlic hairtail stew.

The hairtail cuts were so thick it was hard to believe this was ₩15,000 per person. On top of that, plenty of sauce-soaked braised radish was layered underneath, and you could really feel the owner's generosity.
Foreign tourists wrapping the spicy garlic sauce in seaweed too
There weren't just Korean diners in the restaurant — quite a few foreign tourists were there as well. A spicy stew loaded with garlic can be a bit of an entry barrier for foreign visitors, but everyone was wrapping it in seaweed and eating it with real enjoyment.

How did the hairtail itself taste?
I dug into the hairtail flesh in earnest. The fish was so tender that gently working the spoon along the bones revealed soft, moist white meat underneath.
The hairtail meat wasn't fishy at all — clean and mild, with the spicy-sweet, sharp savoriness of garlic soaked deep in, and it practically melted the moment it hit my mouth. The sauce wasn't just relentlessly spicy either; the garlic's natural sweetness and depth of flavor came through, and the umami was incredible.

Just putting a piece of the braised radish on hot rice and mixing it around was enough to make me clear a whole bowl of rice — a true 'rice thief.'

Take a full bite of this combination and the nutty aroma of the seaweed hits first, then the crunch of the bean sprouts, and finally the hairtail meat and the sharp, spicy garlic sauce come together perfectly. The seaweed wraps the whole flavor in nuttiness, and it just kept going without ever getting tiring!

Who is Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch best for?
I'd recommend Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch without hesitation if you're near Hyeopjae Beach with your parents, or with a partner or friends, and want genuinely delicious Jeju home-style food at a reasonable price. If you're coming to the Hyeopjae area, be sure to stop by and treat yourself to a hearty, deeply savory garlic hairtail stew meal!
