Gyeongju mochi shop picnic at Noseo-ri with no cooler bag: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a fruit mochi and tart dessert shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Visiting alone on a weekday at 12:19pm, the writer took out three mochi — peach at 7,000 won, low-sugar mango yogurt at 7,500 won and fresh chocolate at 6,000 won — and ate them picnic-style at Noseo-ri in the Daereungwon area, where more than 30 minutes without a cooler bag left them slightly melted. Tareudang wins on fruit volume and fresh cream, making it a completely different genre from the traditional chapssaltteok of Seoul's Hanjeongseon.

Fruit mochi is having a moment these days, right? Every region has its own take on this dessert, and it's fun comparing them. I recently visited Tareudang on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, known as the local rival to Seoul's Hanjeongseon fruit mochi, and tried it myself! It really was different from Hanjeongseon 😮

Where is Tareudang in Gyeongju, and what are its hours?
Tareudang is a fruit mochi and tart shop at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, on Hwangnidang-gil. It's open daily 11:00–19:00, but may close early once ingredients run out!

Tareudang menu and prices on Hwangnidang-gil

Tareudang is a Hwangnidang-gil dessert spot known for its fruit mochi and tarts, and the foot traffic apparently never stops! I read other reviews saying items sell out in the afternoon, so I rushed over the moment I arrived in Gyeongju.

📌 Tareudang menu
- ✔ Low-sugar dried persimmon yogurt ₩6,500
- ✔ Fresh chocolate ₩6,000
- ✔ Peach ₩7,000
- ✔ Low-sugar mango yogurt ₩7,500
- ✔ Fig ₩5,500
- ✔ Pineapple ₩5,500
- ✔ Gold kiwi ₩5,500
- ❤ ₩500 off per piece when buying 4 or more ❤
I visited on a weekday at 12:19pm and every menu item was still in stock. Buying 4 or more mochi gets you ₩500 off each, but since I was solo, I ordered fresh chocolate, peach, and mango. (Don't be shocked that I ate all of it by myself~)

My biggest mistake that day: they also had tarts and a new dried persimmon mochi, but I got so distracted by the peach that I forgot to order either one, haha.
I'd recommend deciding what you want before you get there!

Why a cooler bag is essential for Tareudang takeout
Tareudang's fruit mochi needs refrigeration, so leaving it at room temperature too long softens its shape — a cooler bag is a must, right? Tareudang gives you a free box + cooler bag if you buy 3 or more and leave a Naver photo review ❤
But I figured I'd be fine since I was planning to eat picnic-style at Daereungwon, so I skipped it — if you're moving for more than about 30 minutes, the cooler bag is essential! I thought cool September weather would be forgiving, but it melted a little and that was a bit of a letdown 😂 I really recommend doing the review event, everyone!
Taking Tareudang mochi on a Daereungwon picnic

Peach mochi, 7,000 won
Wrapped in red hanji (traditional paper), Tareudang's peach mochi feels more than thick — it has a satisfying heft that fills your whole hand, thump-thump ✨

Wow, is this quality even legal at this price...? The chewy rice cake skin melts the moment it hits your mouth, and even though this isn't a yogurt-based item, the sweet fresh cream — soft like soft-serve ice cream — paired with the fragrant, sweet in-season peach felt like destiny ❤

With Hanjeongseon, each bite made me sad because it disappeared so fast, but Tareudang's peach is charming precisely because the amount and quality of fruit doesn't seem to run out ✨ The rice cake stretched so far it surprised even me — the staff there were staring too, lol. How far is this going to stretch...
FYI, if you're eating this outdoors, bring string or dental floss to cut it. Seriously, there's so much fruit it practically spills out. I just shoved it into my mouth!!! (The embarrassment is on me ✌🏻)

Low-sugar mango yogurt mochi, 7,500 won
Mango is honestly pretty expensive, right? It's much pricier than peach, and with only a ₩500 difference in price I wasn't expecting much, but...

Tareudang just dumped in the fruit 👍🏻 It was noticeably heavier than the peach one, which surprised me, and the first bite revealed a perfectly ripened mango ❤ Honestly, this bite brought back memories of the mango I ate during my language study abroad in the Philippines!! ㅠ The resemblance was uncanny.

The taste — rich, sweet mango balanced against tangy low-sugar yogurt — needs no more words, it's basically love ❤ By the way, the yogurt wasn't some generic store-bought kind either — it had little black flecks like a specially made in-house yogurt. I feel like they could sell bite-sized yogurt mochi on its own and sell out instantly!!

Fresh chocolate mochi, 6,000 won
No matter how refreshing and delicious the fruit ones are, fresh chocolate is its own category, so I couldn't skip it (●'◡'●)

This wasn't cheap, one-note-sweet chocolate — it was deep, rich, chewy fresh chocolate packed into the mochi. The moment I bit in, the chewy rice cake texture and the smoothly melting chocolate came together perfectly. If the fruit mochi feels bright and cool, the chocolate mochi is rich and luxuriously sweet ❤
Noseo-ri: the picnic spot in the Daereungwon area

Before heading out, I'd vaguely hoped to eat lunch in a cool breeze, and I got exactly that with a picnic in Noseo-ri near Daereungwon! I've visited Gyeongju often, but seeing the lush greenery in person while eating a great dessert made this 100% happiness ❤
Tareudang in Gyeongju vs Hanjeongseon in Seoul: an honest comparison

Gyeongju's Tareudang vs Seoul's Hanjeongseon — same category of fruit mochi, but I was struck by how different the two genres really are.
Tareudang, Gyeongju
- ✔ Generously packed with high-quality fruit, no holding back
- ✔ Soft, chewy rice cake skin — may not be for everyone
- ✔ No yogurt in the base, but fresh cream adds softness
- ✔ Coated with castella crumbs instead of starch powder
Hanjeongseon, Seoul
- ✔ Small, bean-sized fruit for the price, though good quality (small and precious enough that ₩6,000 feels like ₩600,000)
- ✔ Chewy, clean rice cake — safely likable
- ✔ The no-yogurt version is just fruit + rice cake, so simple
- ✔ Traditional mochi style, coated with starch powder
Comparing them side by side, they really feel like completely different genres, don't they? If you want fruit mochi loaded with big, refreshing seasonal fruit alongside that Daereungwon picnic mood, go for Tareudang in Gyeongju. If you prefer the clean, traditional rice cake texture, go for Hanjeongseon in Seoul. Both brands feel similar at a glance but have their own distinct charm! If you're visiting Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, I recommend finding the fruit mochi that matches your taste.
