Pohang mulhoe restaurant with a beef bulgogi rice bowl: Ppwang Mulhoe

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant on Haean-ro in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, directly across from Yeongildae Beach. On a return visit for an early family dinner, the meal was a double portion of flounder mulhoe (25,000 won), a Korean beef bulgogi rice bowl (15,000 won) and pajeon (15,000 won), plus tteokbokki and fried snacks from the self-serve bar. Why go back to Ppwang Mulhoe near Yeongildae Beach in Pohang?

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) specialty restaurant across from Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, open daily from 10:30 to 22:00 with last order at 21:00. This is one of the few spots I've saved as a must-visit in Pohang.

I genuinely only eat mulhoe when I'm in Pohang. No matter how highly rated a place in Seoul is, none of them make mulhoe as good as Pohang does... so it's always been a bit of a letdown back home. So while I was in Pohang this time, I went back to Ppwang Mulhoe, a place near Yeongildae I'd visited before. This time I went with my whole family, and everyone raved about how good it was, so I really wanted to share it with you~

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe, and where do you park?

Ppwang Mulhoe sits right across from Yeongildae Beach, and there's a large public parking lot nearby, close to the Yeongildae Heian Café. The location is great. There's also a wide lot right in front of the restaurant, so if you drive, you can park right outside and go straight in to eat.

We parked right out front too!

The sea is right there in front of you like this. Isn't the view amazing?? This was my first time seeing the ocean on this Pohang trip, and it was as calm and pretty as ever.

What is Ppwang Mulhoe like for an early dinner?

Quiet window seats inside Ppwang Mulhoe during early dinner

We came for a slightly early dinner that day. Only a few tables were seated by the window when we arrived, but as we ate, more and more people started coming in~

What's on the self-serve bar at Ppwang Mulhoe?

Overview of the self-serve corner at Ppwang Mulhoe

One of the best things about Ppwang Mulhoe is the self-serve corner. There's a wide range of food there — salad, of course, plus tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), fried snacks, quail eggs, ham and egg stir-fry, tofu salad, pan-fried tofu, and basic side dishes. A lot of people go for the tteokbokki and fried food here.

Besides mulhoe, there's also shrimp fried rice, hoe-deopbap (raw fish over rice), and beef bulgogi rice bowl. Most people order mulhoe, but they also have squid sashimi, flounder sashimi, spring flounder sashimi, and chicken shrimp.

Here's what we ordered that day.

  • Pajeon (green onion pancake) ₩15,000

Flounder mulhoe double portion: how much fish, how it tastes

The mulhoe arrived first. Since we ordered the flounder mulhoe as a double, the portion was massive. If you're in a hurry for lunch, the mulhoe comes out really quickly.

Mulhoe comes with a sweet-and-tangy sauce, and the visual is pretty flashy.

You pour in plenty of the icy broth and mix it well. A bowl of rice comes included too, and you can add somyeon noodles from the self bar!

For anyone who can't eat cucumber, there's a separate no-cucumber option on the menu. I know quite a few people around me who can't eat cucumber, so this option seems really nice.

The mulhoe was loaded with raw fish. I was so satisfied the first time I came here, and it was just as delicious this time. With the icy broth and the springy raw fish together, every bite felt like drinking in the sea..!! I can't handle spicy food at all, but this wasn't spicy at all — just refreshing.

Not in the mood for raw fish? The Korean beef bulgogi rice bowl

Next up, the beef bulgogi rice bowl! My mom doesn't digest raw food well, so she ordered this cooked option instead. It's loaded with meat, and the portion is quite generous.

Stir-fried well with vegetables, the sweet sauce paired nicely with the meat, and there was no gamey smell at all — we enjoyed it to the very last bite.

Pajeon filled with squid at Ppwang Mulhoe

Ppwang Mulhoe's pajeon, loaded with squid

Last up, the pajeon! The outside was crispy, and the inside was packed with a huge amount of squid. There's also a squid soup among the basic side dishes here that's amazing, and this pajeon is generously loaded with squid too!!

Fried crispy on the outside with a nutty flavor, and the inside stayed moist with the green onion aroma coming through.

Golden and pan-fried, a dip in soy sauce brought a savory, salty flavor that filled the whole mouth.
