What kind of restaurant is Midam Kitchen on Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju?

Midam Kitchen is a Western restaurant on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju that serves everything from pasta, pizza, and risotto to handmade pork cutlets. Hwangnidang-gil is a must for any Gyeongju trip — there's so much to see and so many good restaurants that we were stuck deciding where to eat, and that's how we found Midam Kitchen! I came across it while searching for good restaurants on Hwangnidang-gil, and it looked promising since you could try a bit of everything.

Midam Kitchen is also apparently famous as a handmade pork cutlet restaurant, so since we love pork cutlet, we went in with high expectations — and it turns out every menu item can be packed to go. Ordering takeout even gets you a 10% discount, which seems great when you're short on time to eat at the restaurant or just want to eat comfortably back at your accommodation!

Hanok exterior and room seats: the mood at Midam Kitchen

The exterior of Midam Kitchen has a hanok (traditional Korean house) feel that really matches the Gyeongju atmosphere of Hwangnidang-gil, giving it a different charm from a typical modern Western restaurant. Part of the fun of a Gyeongju trip is seeking out restaurants with this kind of hanok vibe, and Midam Kitchen blended naturally into the surroundings.

Once inside, the feeling is different from the exterior — the whole space is clean yet cozy, making it comfortable to sit and eat. There's also a separate room-style space, which seems great for family gatherings or dining with a larger group. It would suit couples looking for a Gyeongju date restaurant, as well as anyone looking for a spot for a family trip with parents or a group gathering.

Reservations and how to order at Midam Kitchen

Midam Kitchen is already well known as a Hwangnidang-gil restaurant in Gyeongju, and when we visited, there were quite a few reserved tables. Especially on weekends or during peak travel hours, I'd recommend booking ahead through Naver Reservations rather than waiting on-site.

What's on the Midam Kitchen menu?

Midam Kitchen's menu was more varied than I expected — everything from light salads to pizza, pasta, risotto, and pork cutlet — so it's a good spot for a group where everyone can pick something to their own taste! If you're after Gyeongju pasta or Hwangnidang-gil pizza, there are plenty of options, and if you want rice, you can go for the risotto, making it a solid Hwangnidang-gil restaurant to eat a proper meal at.

Drinks include ades and sodas, along with alcohol and wine, which pair well with the food. If you want to slowly enjoy pasta or pizza with a glass of wine, it would also work well as a Hwangnidang-gil date course.

Kkanpung pork cutlet, 15,900 won: thin crust, thick meat

Midam Kitchen's kkanpung pork cutlet is ₩15,900, and ordering the cutlet comes with salad and rice, plus radish pickles and jalapeños on the side. It's not just the cutlet on its own — you get rice and salad along with it, making it a filling meal.

Cross-section of the thin-breaded kkanpung pork cutlet

The kkanpung pork cutlet looked appetizing from the start, and I liked that the breading wasn't too thick. Sometimes when the breading on a cutlet is too thick, the fried coating overpowers the meat, but at Midam Kitchen, the thin crust wrapped a thick cut of meat, so you could really feel the texture of the pork. The outside was crispy while the inside stayed thick and meaty — I could see why it's known as a handmade pork cutlet restaurant.

The sauce on the kkanpung pork cutlet was especially good. It's not a typical pork cutlet sauce but a kkanpung-style sauce, and it had that flavor that kept pulling you back for more. Coating the thick cutlet generously in the sauce brought the crispy crust, juicy meat, and sauce together really well.

Salad and rice served with the pork cutlet

Eating some salad in between cleared the palate each time, and having rice alongside made it easy to alternate with the cutlet. The radish pickles and jalapeños were also good to have on hand whenever things got a bit rich.

Cream chicken rigatoni, 15,900 won: thick cream sauce

The cream chicken rigatoni we also ordered was ₩15,900, and it was satisfying. If you usually like thick, rich cream pasta, I'd recommend this one — the cream sauce isn't a thin style but thick enough to cling densely to the rigatoni, so you could really taste the cream's richness in every bite.

Rigatoni noodles coated in thick cream sauce

The cream sauce coated the thick rigatoni tubes well, so the sauce and pasta didn't feel separate at all — they came together nicely. The soft, rich cream sauce paired well with the rigatoni, and it was personally one of my favorite dishes there.

With chicken mixed in, it had more variety in texture than a plain cream pasta and felt more filling. If you like a thick cream sauce and are looking for a Gyeongju pasta or Hwangnidang-gil pasta spot, the cream chicken rigatoni is worth trying.

Is this a good pair of dishes to share between two?

Ordering the kkanpung pork cutlet and cream chicken rigatoni together at Midam Kitchen worked out well. One was crispy cutlet with that tasty kkanpung sauce, and the other was a thick, rich cream sauce, so it was fun alternating between two very different styles of dishes.

Midam Kitchen is a Hwangnidang-gil restaurant whose hanok exterior and cozy interior fit the Gyeongju atmosphere beautifully. With a varied menu and takeout available on everything, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a date spot or a place for a family meal on Hwangnidang-gil.
