Pork cutlet rice bowl and jjolmyeon in Ssangam-dong, Gwangju

In short

Jeongseong Katsu, Cheomdan Branch is a donkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant on Cheomdan-jungang-ro in Ssangam-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. On a return visit the writer shared the gyeongyangsik king donkatsu (old-style Western-influenced pork cutlet), a donkatsu rice bowl, jjolmyeon (spicy chewy noodles) and the review-event cold banmemil (buckwheat noodles), and the sweet old-fashioned cutlet sauce went especially well with the jjolmyeon. The first visit's satisfaction held up completely, making Jeongseong Katsu an easy choice whenever a pork cutlet craving hits in Cheomdan.

What is the restaurant like inside?

Jeongseong Katsu, Cheomdan Branch looked clean and compact from the outside. The sign and posters out front were easy to spot, so even a first-time visitor could find it without trouble.

The inside was well kept overall, making it comfortable to eat in. The tables weren't cramped, so it seemed like a nice spot for a meal with friends or family. Above all, everything from ordering to the food arriving felt smooth, which made it easy to want to come back.

There's a good range of donkatsu, noodle and rice dishes to suit different tastes. Today I ordered the gyeongyangsik king donkatsu, donkatsu don, jjolmyeon, and the review-event cold banmemil~

Gyeongyangsik king donkatsu: still as good the second time

This time I ordered two menu items from Jeongseong Katsu, Cheomdan Branch: the gyeongyangsik king donkatsu and the donkatsu don. I enjoyed this dish before, so I naturally reached for it again. If you're looking for donkatsu in Cheomdan, Gwangju and you like old-fashioned gyeongyangsik-style cutlets, this one will suit your taste especially well.

A hefty cutlet arrives on the plate and it looks filling just to look at. There's plenty of sauce on top, so eating it with the cutlet gave a moist, sweetish flavor. The breading wasn't too thick either, so it stayed in sync with the meat and kept a decently crisp texture.

The meat was tender rather than dry, so the plate emptied fast, bite by bite. If you're hunting for donkatsu in Cheomdan, Gwangju and like the gyeongyangsik style, I'd recommend this dish. Eating it with sauce and rice together is oddly addictive, keeping your chopsticks moving. If you like that old-school donkatsu feel, this should satisfy quite a lot.

Donkatsu rice bowl: the filling option

The second dish I ordered was the donkatsu don rice bowl. It has a different charm from eating donkatsu plain, so I ordered it alongside, and the combination was great. If you're looking for donkatsu in Cheomdan, Gwangju and want a filling rice dish too, donkatsu don is a solid choice. The crisply fried cutlet, rice, and sauce came together nicely, good for eating spoonful by spoonful.

Being a rice bowl didn't mean the cutlet's crispness disappeared completely — a good bit of texture remained, which I liked. The meat was clean and mild with no off-flavor, so it went well with the sauce and rice.

Jjolmyeon, the best partner for a pork cutlet

The jjolmyeon (spicy chewy noodles) came piled with vegetables, seaweed, and a sweet-and-tangy sauce. This is the kind of dish that comes to mind when you want a simple lunch with donkatsu. It's reasonably priced too, so it's easy to order alongside.

The jjolmyeon paired perfectly with the donkatsu. Among donkatsu spots in Cheomdan, Gwangju, this really felt like the complete meal.

The review-event cold banmemil buckwheat noodles

If you join the Jeongseong Katsu, Cheomdan Branch review event, you can choose between udon or banmemil (half-buckwheat noodles) — I chose the cold buckwheat noodles. The broth was really delicious, cold and refreshing, the best.

Which dish should you order at Jeongseong Katsu?

Ordering different dishes and sharing them meant I could taste the differences between the gyeongyangsik king donkatsu, donkatsu don, jjolmyeon, and cold buckwheat noodles, which was great. If you're browsing donkatsu options in Cheomdan, Gwangju and can't decide what to order, just go with your taste. If you like the old-style sweet sauce and a hefty cutlet, go with the gyeongyangsik king donkatsu; if you want crispy katsu with rice for a filling meal, I'd recommend the donkatsu don. Personally, I was glad that even on a return visit after a while, the satisfaction from my first meal here held up exactly the same.

If you were searching for donkatsu in Cheomdan, Gwangju and looking for a place to visit, Jeongseong Katsu, Cheomdan Branch is worth adding to your list. The atmosphere is clean and the menu has broad appeal, so it's a comfortable place to eat with anyone. Above all, I liked that it's an easy, no-pressure place to visit whenever a donkatsu craving strikes.
