Jeonju restaurant, beef pancake in chive pickle: Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi

In short

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is a mulgalbi (water-braised beef ribs) and yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef) restaurant on Donmun-gil in Jeonju's Hanok Village. On a date there, the galbi hot pot set runs 22,000 won per person, and the marinated yukjeon wrapped in the chive and pickled onion side dishes was seasoned well enough to need no sauce at all. My partner and I went on a date to Hanok Village and had mulgalbi (water-braised ribs) for the first time in a while! 'Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi' was a place we'd only walked past on our strolls together, but today we finally got to try it!

Where do you park at Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi?

Up to 5 cars can park right in front of Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi! If it's full, I'd recommend using the Hanok Village public parking lot. We didn't realize there was parking right in front and ended up parking further away — but we got a nice walk through Hanok Village after our meal, haha, so it worked out as exercise too!

The exterior looks so upscale and pretty, haha! Maybe it was the nice weather that day, but it looked even lovelier. There are also tables and chairs set up outside for seating!

While looking around the outside, I noticed it had actually been on TV before! We hadn't even tasted the food yet... and my expectations were already going up!?

I was surprised at how spacious Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi's dining room was! With its size and group seating, I'd recommend it for family gatherings, work dinners, and the like.

I personally like places that are clean and tidy, and Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi's spacious, clean interior really won me over! My partner seemed satisfied too!

Menu board

Take a look at the menu board for reference! Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi's signature dish is the galbi jeongol (rib hot pot), and most people seem to order the set that comes with yukjeon (pan-fried marinated beef)!

Our galbi jeongol set finally arrived! Doesn't it look really generous?

The galbi jeongol was bubbling away as we ordered!!! Waiting for mulgalbi to fully cook is always the hardest part, ha. While waiting for it to finish cooking, we snacked on the side dishes. My partner loves side dishes and always digs into them first when we eat out! They said Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi's side dishes were clean and delicious too!

Mulgalbi with bean sprouts and glass noodles

The galbi jeongol was loaded with vegetables like carrots and mushrooms! I don't usually eat many vegetables, but today I planned to eat plenty!

There were big chunks of pork right in the jeongol like this. My mouth was already watering!

Once the meat cooks through, the mulgalbi needs to be cut into bite-sized pieces! And this pairs so well with the bean sprouts!!!

You can't skip the glass noodles with mulgalbi either! Try the glass noodles before the mulgalbi is fully cooked — the broth soaks in so well, giving them a sweet and spicy flavor that's really delicious!

I dipped the yukjeon that came with the jeongol into the broth. The spicy-sweet broth soaked into the yukjeon, making it so moist and delicious!

The combination of mulgalbi and bean sprouts — need I say more... The tender meat with the crunchy sprouts together is just so good!

The jeongol broth was so rich and tasty that I even dipped rice into it... and tried it that way too!

Marinated yukjeon that needs no dipping sauce

Yukjeon

The yukjeon that comes with the set! It had been a while since I'd had yukjeon. As you can see, the portion is generous! Doesn't the meat look so tender just from the look of it?!

The yukjeon comes already cut into bite-sized pieces! We ended up cutting it a bit smaller ourselves. Since Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi marinates the meat beforehand, it's already well-seasoned, so you don't need to dip it in any extra sauce! No separate sauce is served — instead, it's perfect paired with the pickled onion side dish!

The meat was thicker than usual for yukjeon, haha! It felt like eating a fancy (?) dish after a long while!!

I also tried it with the chives and pickled onion side dishes! Eating it this way was seriously delicious.

I don't usually eat much of the side dishes, but the chives were really good!? The seasoning on the chives was nutty and light — I loved it!

Is Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi good for a Hanok Village date?

It was truly a filling meal. Unlike other mulgalbi restaurants, having yukjeon come as part of the set made the mulgalbi feel like an even more upscale dish! It would be a great spot to bring family too, but as someone who went with their partner during a Hanok Village date, Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi was a wonderful choice.
