I used to come to Jeonbuk National University a lot in my early twenties, and stopping by for a drink again, I was surprised how many people were around — students, adults, foreigners, all sorts. While hunting for a Jeonbuk-dae restaurant recommendation, I found Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch, a Korean bar-restaurant that works for both a meal and drinks, known for its galbi-jjim (❁´◡`❁)

Inside Hwanyeong: seating and mood

Inside, Hwanyeong has a quiet vibe with a strong retro feel, which made it feel like just the right spot for a drink. There's a surprising amount of seating too, so it seemed like it could easily handle a Jeonbuk-dae group dinner 👀

Hwanyeong's menu: spicy galbi-jjim and bossam are the signatures

This is the menu at Hwanyeong, a bar near Jeonbuk-dae. Their signature menu items are spicy galbi-jjim and bossam (boiled pork wraps). There are also soups, jeon, and side dishes, so it looked like a good place to order a variety of things 😎

The free side that steals the show: Hwanyeong's pickled onions

These are the basic sides they bring out once you order — seaweed soup, corn salad, and pickled onions — and that pickled onion is seriously the kicker!! If you order the galbi-jjim, definitely eat the onions alongside it 😆

Complimentary chicken salad and steamed egg

This is the complimentary chicken salad and steamed egg they gave us. I genuinely didn't expect it, so I was endlessly touched (❁´◡`❁) The chicken salad is perfect as an appetizer, and the steamed egg is great to have a bite of midway through the galbi-jjim :)

What comes in the 40,000-won spicy galbi-jjim set

Here's what we ordered.

  • Spicy galbi-jjim set - 40,000 won
  • Spicy galbi-jjim set => galbi-jjim + jeon

Mild or spicy? How hot Hwanyeong's galbi-jjim really is

The spicy galbi-jjim came out first. The ribs sit at the bottom with vegetables piled on top, and you can eat it once the bean sprouts and glass noodles are cooked through.

  • Choice of mild or spicy
  • Mild: a bit less spicy than Shin Ramyun
  • Spicy: a bit less spicy than Yeoptteok original

As the vegetables wilted down, the broth got richer too. It's packed with ingredients — bean sprouts, mushrooms, glass noodles, sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) — and just the color alone was enough to make me swallow hard. (We went with the spicy option 😋)

There were 3–4 chunks of rib meat in there like this. The meat was so tender it cut apart easily. If anyone asks me for a galbi-jjim spot in Jeonju, I'd recommend Hwanyeong without hesitation — it was that good.

Thanks to the scoring on the meat, the seasoning soaks in nicely between the cuts — moist, tender, and with no gamey smell, so my chopsticks kept going back for more 🤩🤩

How to eat it: sujebi, rib meat and bean sprouts in one bite

We piled sujebi, galbi, and bean sprouts together and ate it as a three-way combo, and it's a flavor that makes you clap on its own!!! From the first bite I kept eating it this way. I officially declare this a Jeonbuk-dae restaurant and Jeonbuk-dae bar recommendation (●'◡'●)

My own tip — the sujebi hardens fast, so I'd recommend eating the glass noodles and sujebi early on.

Choosing the half-and-half jeon included in the set

This is the jeon that comes with the galbi-jjim set. You can choose chive jeon, kimchi jeon, or half-and-half — we went with half-and-half :)

Kimchi jeon and chive jeon served side by side

Both the kimchi jeon and chive jeon stayed crispy and delicious even as time passed.

A crispy piece of jeon with a small dish of soy sauce

Dipping it in the soy sauce that comes alongside gives it a refreshing feel — such a great combination. Whoever paired the galbi-jjim and jeon into one set really knows their food..😁 The portion is generously sized too, so the galbi-jjim set should be plenty even for 3 people!

Is Hwanyeong a good group dinner spot near Jeonbuk-dae?

Galbi-jjim just calls for drinks..🖤 Out of the countless bars near Jeonbuk-dae, I was torn but ended up at Hwanyeong, and it was such a satisfying time. The owner was really kind too, the portions are generous, and the set combo is great, making it a wonderful place to grab a drink :-D The combination of galbi-jjim and jeon is still a flavor I remember 🤭 They also sell a bossam set, so I'm planning to come back soon just for that, hehe. If you're looking for a Jeonbuk-dae group dinner spot, a Jeonbuk-dae restaurant or bar, or galbi-jjim in Jeonju, I recommend Hwanyeong Jeonbuk-daehak branch.**
