Sogang University izakaya in Seoul: dry-aged sashimi at Mulgogijip

In short

Mulgogijip is an izakaya in front of Sogang University in Mapo, Seoul, a short walk from Daeheung Station Exit 4, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking down on the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail. This visit covered the dry-aged sashimi platter (moriawase, 39,000 won), futomaki (5 pieces, 20,000 won), the four-kind yakitori course (15,000 won) and Yebisu draft beer (12,000 won), and the aging on the mackerel sashimi and the chicken skin skewer were the standouts. Mulgogijip has been the only bar near Daeheung Station worth going back to since last year.

I want to introduce you to my all-time favorite regular spot near Sogang University — the izakaya Mulgogijip! I've been going steadily since last year, and it's the bar I always end up at whenever I'm near Daeheung Station. The vibe is great too, so it works well as a date spot along Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, and it's a good pick if you're looking for restaurants in Sinsu-dong.

The floor-to-ceiling windows look straight out onto Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, and with the weather turning cooler, I imagine sitting on the outdoor terrace would be even nicer..ෆ

There are counter (dachi) seats too, so you can watch the cooking up close, and it seems like a great atmosphere for drinking solo as well.

Mulgogijip's menu and what we ordered

The menu here covers today's recommended sashimi, odeng tantan nabe (fish cake hot pot), wild mackerel sushi, dry-aged sashimi platter, futomaki, yakitori, and more, plus an impressive drinks lineup so you can drink to your taste.

The basic side dish is a chicken breast cabbage salad, and the dressing wasn't heavy, so it was light and easy to eat.

Yebisu draft beer, 12,000 won

You have to try the Yebisu draft at this izakaya near Sogang..ღ It was my first time having it on draft, and the creamy foam made it go down so smoothly — honestly the best draft beer I've had, on a whole different level. Definitely try it.

What comes on the 39,000 won dry-aged sashimi platter

You can see the aging fridge for yourself here, which is probably why I end up ordering this dry-aged sashimi platter every time — it came with flounder, Spanish mackerel, mackerel, sea bream, salmon, bluefin tuna, and abalone.

Dry-aged sashimi with flounder, Spanish mackerel, mackerel, and sea bream

I'm not usually a fan of mackerel sashimi because of the fishy taste, but Mulgogijip's mackerel was better than what I've had in Jeju — the aging was flawless and the umami was incredible.

Abalone served with liver sauce

All the sashimi was high quality, and being dry-aged, it had this chewy-yet-tender texture and a flavor that filled your mouth perfectly?!

The abalone came with its own liver sauce, and eating them together made the pairing even better.

Futomaki, 5 pieces for 20,000 won, packed with filling

The futomaki here is made with whatever fish is fresh that day, so the quality is great and the fillings are generously packed in.

Personally I like futomaki with less rice and more filling, and this was exactly my style. The moment it hit my mouth all the ingredients came together as one — I'd rank this the best futomaki I've had >_<

Charcoal-grilled four-kind yakitori course

The four-kind yakitori course, 15,000 won: a first try

I'd never ordered this before, so I finally gave the four-kind yakitori course a try, and honestly, watching them grill it right in front of us made it impossible not to order (?). From left: chicken skin, skirt steak, knee cartilage, and skirt steak again — there was a faint charcoal aroma, and the chicken skin in particular was so good I wanted to order it again on its own..♥

Is Mulgogijip a good date spot on the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail?

Every time I'm near Daeheung Station, Mulgogijip is the only bar I go to — the food quality is great and the cozy atmosphere makes it easy to talk comfortably. It works well as a Gyeongui Line Forest Trail date course and holds its own as a blind date spot too, so if you're looking for a bar near Daeheung Station or along Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, I recommend this izakaya near Sogang University :)
