Seoul Station gyukatsu restaurant with fried sides: Furato Shokudo
In short
Furato Shokudo Seoul Square Direct Store is a Japanese gyukatsu restaurant on the first basement floor of Seoul Square in Jung-gu, Seoul, 55m from Seoul Station Exit 9. The order at Furato Shokudo was gyukatsu at 19,500 won, Japanese-style omurice at 14,500 won and chicken gara-age with fried shrimp at 6,000 won, cooked slice by slice on a tabletop grill with butter. The gyukatsu was crisp outside and pink in the middle and the omurice stayed moist all the way through, making it a 200% revisit.

I feel like I've eaten at pretty much every restaurant in Seoul Square, but oddly there was exactly one place I'd never tried — Furato Shokudo. I kept walking past it, but I always ended up going somewhere else, so it kept getting pushed back. Lately though I've been really into gyukatsu (breaded pork/beef cutlet), so every time I came to Seoul Square this place got more and more tempting. In the end I can't resist curiosity. So here's my long-overdue visit to Furato Shokudo Seoul Square Direct Store.
I've had a lot of lunches near Seoul Station lately, so I've been hunting down Japanese restaurants near Seoul Station quite a bit. Since they had both gyukatsu and omurice, we decided to order both and share.
Where is Furato Shokudo Seoul Square, and what is it like in the evening?
Furato Shokudo is on the basement floor of Seoul Square, so it's super easy to get to right from Seoul Station. It's only 55m from Exit 9, so the access is really convenient. Rain or snow, doesn't matter — connected straight through the subway passage 🥰
It's also perfectly located for office workers near Seoul Station looking for lunch near Namdaemun. I'd only ever come to Seoul Square during the day, so I figured it'd be quieter in the evening — but nope, packed like the popular spot it is.

What we ordered at Furato Shokudo and what it cost
Here's what we ordered:
- Gyukatsu ₩19,500
- Japanese-style omurice ₩14,500
- Chicken gara-age with fried shrimp ₩6,000
My son, who loves fried shrimp the most, always orders it whenever we go to a Japanese restaurant and reviews it haha. Anyway, what I was most curious about was the gyukatsu. The interior was clean and pleasant, and there were quite a few solo diners too.

Gyukatsu grilled with butter on the tabletop grill
The moment the food arrived, the gyukatsu's visuals grabbed all the attention. Mouth-watering, honestly haha.

The outside was fried properly crisp while the center stayed a vivid pink. It came sliced into thick pieces so it looked really appetizing right away, served with cabbage and wasabi on the side.
What made Furato Shokudo's gyukatsu fun was that you don't just eat it as-is — you grill each piece yourself. My kid loved this the most 🤣🤣 Once you put the gyukatsu on the tabletop grill, it starts sizzling, and you get to cook it exactly to your liking.
Personally I preferred just lightly searing the outside rather than cooking it too long. Adding a little butter as you grill makes it even better — don't skip the butter.

Once the meat inside warms up on top of that initially crispy coating, the signature gyukatsu texture really comes through.
Tried the gyukatsu with salt, then with wasabi — yum yum.

From the visuals to the taste... even writing about it makes me want to eat it again 🤣🤣

Grilling each piece of gyukatsu myself and eating it with rice on the side turned out to be more filling than I expected. If you're after a gyukatsu spot in Seoul Square, definitely give Furato Shokudo a try ♡
How was the Japanese-style omurice?
We also ordered Japanese-style omurice (rice omelette) alongside it. Since we came for the gyukatsu, I honestly didn't expect much from the omurice, but the look of it alone was properly Japanese-style.
The yellow egg sat plump on top of the rice, and when I cut it open, the egg inside was incredibly soft and moist. I can never get it to turn out like this at home — always amazes me haha.

It wasn't just pretty on the outside — the soft, fluffy texture held up all the way through, so I was glad we ordered it alongside the gyukatsu. Getting one gyukatsu and one omurice to split between two people worked well since the dishes didn't overlap. I think that was demi-glace sauce? Drizzling it on made it even tastier.
Chicken gara-age with fried shrimp side, 6,000 won
We also got chicken gara-age with fried shrimp as a side. Good combo to add on if you like fried dishes. The shrimp were large and fried crisp, and with the gara-age (Japanese fried chicken) also included, it was great for grabbing a bite here and there between the gyukatsu and omurice.

Is Furato Shokudo worth a return trip near Seoul Station?
We went in for gyukatsu and ended up properly full on omurice and sides too. Having eaten at so many restaurants in Seoul Square, I couldn't believe I only got around to this one now.
Especially if you're tired of the same old lunch options near Seoul Station and want something a bit different like gyukatsu, this place is worth checking out. The location is also perfect right before catching a train from Seoul Station, so definitely go. I only visited because I've been obsessed with gyukatsu lately, but my revisit intention is 200%.
