Suwon chicken cutlet restaurant for a kids' dinner: Gyewondang Ingye

We finished day one of the gifted-student camp at Ajou University and stepped out just past 5 pm.

The kids seemed hungry, so we decided to grab dinner before heading straight home. About a 10-minute drive from Ajou University brought us to Gyewondang Ingye Branch (계원당 인계점).

Pork cutlet places are everywhere, but restaurants specializing in chicken cutlet are actually pretty rare. This seemed like a fun one to try with the kids, so we headed over.

We parked in the building's basement and went in.

The overall vibe was clean and comfortable. The tables were neatly arranged, and there were quite a lot of two-person tables.

That made it feel like an easy place to eat solo or grab a quick meal for two. We came as a family, but from the seating setup it looked totally fine for solo dining or small groups too.

Chicken cutlet menu and side choices at Gyewondang Ingye Branch

That day we ordered the Gyewon chicken cutlet, fried chicken steak, and spicy chicken cutlet.

For the Gyewon chicken cutlet we picked egg fried rice and a hot dog bun, for the fried chicken steak we chose black rice, and for the spicy chicken cutlet we went with egg fried rice.

Here you don't just choose the dish — you can also pick your side. The default is egg fried rice, and depending on the menu you can switch it to a hot dog bun or black rice.

Another nice touch: you can add one sauce for free.

The kids picked the seasoned chicken sauce. When the food arrived, one side of the cutlet already had the basic sauce drizzled on, and the other side came plain so you could dip it separately.

The kids loved dipping their cutlet in the extra seasoned chicken sauce and kept going back for more, haha.

How crispy is the Gyewon chicken cutlet?

We started with the Gyewon chicken cutlet. Coated in breadcrumbs and fried, it looked pretty similar to a regular pork cutlet.

Cutting into it, there was tender chicken inside and a crispy coating outside.

It felt similar to pork cutlet but a bit softer, probably because it's chicken instead of pork. Paired with the egg fried rice, it made for a solid full meal.

Fried chicken steak: a different texture altogether

Next up was the fried chicken steak. Placed side by side with the Gyewon chicken cutlet, the coating already looked different.

If the Gyewon chicken cutlet is more like breaded pork-cutlet style, the fried chicken steak felt more like eating actual fried chicken.

Paired with the black rice, this one was also a satisfying full meal on its own.

Both are fried chicken dishes, but the coating and texture were different enough that each had its own charm.

Chicken cutlet on a hot dog bun: worth trying?

One thing I was curious about with this order was the hot dog bun. I assumed it'd just be plain bread, but it actually comes with cabbage and sauce already added.

Just place a chicken cutlet on top and you've basically made a chicken hot dog.

Making it ourselves turned out to be quite the treat. It felt totally different from eating chicken cutlet with rice — with the bun, cabbage, and sauce added, it really did taste like a hot dog.

The kids had a lot of fun assembling their own.

How spicy is the spicy chicken cutlet?

We also ordered the spicy chicken cutlet. Even the default sauce drizzled on top had a pretty strong kick.

The kids were curious and took small bites — after one taste, they immediately said, "too spicy!"

I tried it too, and yes, it was definitely spicy. If you usually enjoy spicy food, you'll probably be fine, but if you're eating with kids, it's worth keeping in mind that the heat is stronger than you might expect.

Soda for 900 won with unlimited refills

Not many restaurants offer unlimited drink refills these days, but here you can get all-you-can-drink soda for just ₩900.

Being able to help ourselves as much as we wanted during the meal was a nice touch.

Extra side dishes and water are self-service — you just grab as much as you need, which was convenient.

Free parking in the building basement

Parking was free in the building's basement. We could head straight to the car after eating, which made things easy.

Pork cutlet is a familiar dish, but trying several menu items at a chicken cutlet specialty restaurant felt like a whole different experience from our usual pork cutlet.

The Gyewon chicken cutlet is breaded and fried crispy, while the fried chicken steak leans more toward actual fried chicken — the two menus were quite different from each other.

Putting chicken cutlet on a hot dog bun in particular worked better than I expected and made for a fun twist, and the kids loved dipping theirs in the extra seasoned chicken sauce.

The spicy chicken cutlet lived up to its name with real heat, so with kids it's best enjoyed in small tastes.

We stopped by with hungry kids in the evening, shared a variety of chicken dishes, and left with a satisfying, filling meal.
