On a day when I'm craving a hot, comforting lunch near home, kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) is always one of the first things that comes to mind — so this time I headed to Sonson Kalguksu Bucheon, a local favorite in Wonjong-dong near Wonjong Station, for a slightly special seafood version.

What surprised me right away was the huge fish tank sitting in front of the restaurant. "Wait, is this really a kalguksu place?" I thought — but once the food arrived, I understood exactly why the tank was there.

Inside Sonson Kalguksu Bucheon: seating and baby chairs

The dining room was pretty full at lunchtime — lots of families and people stopping in for a hot lunch. This shot of the tables was taken after the crowd had cleared out.

Even though it's close to home, this was actually our first visit in about six months, and quite a few things had changed! Among them, I noticed baby chairs were now available — probably added for customers visiting with young kids.

The menu has expanded a lot since our last visit, so there's a lot more to choose from now! They've added bossam, and barley rice comes as a default side too! Still, since we loved the seafood kalguksu from before, we went ahead and ordered the seafood kalguksu for two.

Why the seafood arrives before the noodles

The seafood kalguksu looked a bit different from the photos I posted on my last visit, which might be confusing — Sonson Kalguksu uses fresh seafood, and the types and amounts of shellfish change a bit by season. In particular, the red scallops weren't in season right now, so they were swapped for a different variety — good to keep in mind!

Table setting with barley rice, yeolmu kimchi, gochujang and sesame oil

Barley rice paired nicely with yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi)! There was also gochujang and sesame oil on the table. I tried a bit as a palate cleanser before the seafood finished cooking, and it was clean and delicious!

There's an order to eating Sonson Kalguksu's seafood kalguksu. You eat the scallops, abalone, octopus, shrimp and other seafood in sequence, and once the broth has built up enough flavor, you add hand-pulled acorn noodles to finish it off as kalguksu.

Fishing out the seafood piece by piece, it felt less like I came for kalguksu and more like I was enjoying a seafood stew first!

Acorn kalguksu noodles last: waiting for the hourglass to run out

The real charm here is adding noodles to the broth once you've eaten enough seafood. When you ask staff for noodles, they add hand-pulled acorn noodles and tell you to flip the hourglass on the table and wait. Once all the sand runs down, another whole meal begins!

Acorn kalguksu served with geotjeori and yeolmu kimchi

We ate it alongside geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) and yeolmu kimchi, and the combo of cool seafood broth followed by spicy kimchi was so good! If you run low on side dishes, there's a self-serve bar you can use.

What sets Sonson Kalguksu Bucheon apart from other kalguksu spots near Wonjong Station

Sonson Kalguksu Bucheon isn't just kalguksu loaded with seafood — the fact that you eat the seafood first and then enjoy the noodles later, made with acorn flour no less, really sets it apart from typical kalguksu restaurants.

If you're looking for a place to have lunch with your parents near Wonjong Station, or craving something hot and hearty during these big-temperature-swing days, Sonson Kalguksu Bucheon is worth a visit.
