Weekend lunch waiting times at Hyangtaek Jeonpo, a Busan Korean

In short

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean restaurant on Seojeon-ro in Jeonpo-dong, Busan, known for mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang rice bowls. Visiting at 12:30pm on a weekend for two, the writer tried yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl), mackerel gondre rice, and the new Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi — the raw beef tasted fresh rather than frozen, and the mackerel came fully deboned. The rice dishes earn a repeat visit, though the chicken bulgogi's oiliness may not suit everyone.

If you're looking for a good Korean restaurant in Jeonpo-dong, I recommend Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch. My partner and I always passed by it on our way to Seomyeon after hanging out in Jeonpo, so this time we decided to eat there together for weekend lunch. I was worried about waiting since it was weekend lunch, but when we arrived at 12:30pm there was actually plenty of space. I thought I'd won the timing game — but after 1pm, people suddenly poured in, and by the time we left there were 3 parties waiting haha. Timing really matters at this place!

Location and parking at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch

It's located at 42-1 Seojeon-ro, 1F, Busanjin-gu, Busan, South Korea. This place pursues clean, fresh Korean food culture using ingredients grown in our own soil. With healthy ingredients like rice, vegetables, meat, and fish, you can enjoy a genuinely healthy meal. Just a heads up — parking is at a paid private lot in the building, at your own expense!

What's the atmosphere like?

The moment we walked in, my strongest impression was how clean the place looked.

I also thought the menu being compact and simple was a good thing.

Every single dish was so pretty that it felt like eating a slightly upscale meal. The rice bowls and the plating were so nice it almost felt like a waste to eat them!

Neatly arranged basic side dishes and gopchang gim

When they bring the side dishes, they first ask who ordered which menu and give you the matching sauce for it. The basic side dishes are simple, and since it's a rice bowl place, everything comes very neatly in a big bowl. They also give you gopchang gim (seasoned laver) and jeotgal (salted seafood) to wrap the rice in — personally I thought it paired better with the mackerel gondre rice!

The menu lineup

Mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang rice bowl are the most famous menu items. Besides those, there's also yukhoe bibimbap, regular bibimbap, and various other Korean dishes. As a side, there's also the new Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi. With such a compact menu, it's not hard to choose!

Mackerel gondre rice (₩14,000)

My partner ordered the mackerel gondre rice, and I loved that they served it with all the fish bones already removed. It felt like they were really considerate about making it easy to eat!

They guide you to eat it plain first, then wrap it in laver, and then finally add the soy sauce seasoning.

My partner tried it plain first and said it was delicious, then was debating whether to add the soy sauce, so I suggested adding just a little and deciding from there. Once we added it, the taste completely changed and became even more delicious haha. It was already mild and tasty, but once all the soy sauce went in, it had so much more depth and flavor!

Yukhoe bibimbap (₩14,000)

I ordered the yukhoe bibimbap.

A bowl of yukhoe bibimbap piled high with lettuce

Before mixing in the gochujang and egg yolk, they gave me so much lettuce that at first it was actually hard to mix everything together haha.

From the outside all I could see was lettuce and raw beef, but underneath there were bean sprouts and pear too!

The raw beef also seemed genuinely fresh rather than frozen, which I really loved. Actually my partner and I have a regular yukhoe bibimbap spot we usually go to, but this felt fresher and healthier than that place.

It made me think this might become our new regular spot haha.

Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi (₩9,000)

Since it was a new menu item, we ordered it as a side to try.

There was cartilage in it, which was tasty, but my partner and I both really loved the mild flavor of the rice dishes, and after eating the chicken bulgogi, the oily taste felt a bit jarring in comparison.

If you like richer, oilier flavors, this would suit you well! We're definitely planning to come back for the rice dishes, but I'd recommend choosing the chicken bulgogi based on your personal taste!

Overall verdict

This was a place I always noticed on my way from Jeonpo to Seomyeon, and once I actually visited, it turned out to be a good restaurant for good reason.

From the bowls to the plating, everything felt upscale, and the ingredients were fresh — perfect for when you want a healthy meal. I'd recommend either being prepared to wait on weekend lunches, or arriving before 12:30pm!
