Yangyang summer vacation BBQ: chuck flap tail for two at Yeoyejeong

In short

Yeoyejeong is a mountain-lodge-style charcoal barbecue restaurant on Ssangsolbaegi-gil in Seo-myeon, Yangyang, Gangwon. On a summer trip to Yangyang, two servings of chuck flap tail (salchisal) came with pot rice and kimchi stew, and the beef grilled over coffee-wood bijangtan charcoal melted with no gamy smell, down to the savory scorched rice crust in the pot. For a clean, well-made meat meal in Yangyang, Yeoyejeong is the answer.

Why Yeoyejeong was the summer vacation meat stop in Yangyang

Yeoyejeong is a charcoal barbecue restaurant at 49 Ssangsolbaegi-gil, Seo-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do. I hadn't been to Yangyang for a summer vacation in a while, and honestly there aren't many good restaurants in this area ㅠㅠ Between driving all the way to Sokcho or having barely any other options, I found a real hidden gem that only locals seem to know about!

Hours — Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon 11:30–21:00 (break 15:00–17:00), closed every Tuesday. Lunch meat orders close at 13:30 / lunch specials close at 14:00

Yeoyejeong's mountain-lodge exterior and dining room

The first thing that caught my eye the moment I arrived at Yeoyejeong was the classic, mountain-lodge-style wood-toned exterior.

Wood-toned exterior with a mountain-lodge look

A gorgeous timber building blending into nature, with rows of onggi jars (traditional earthenware pots) out front — even before stepping inside, it felt warm and inviting.

The interior was just as clean and cozy, making it a really comfortable place to eat during a trip.

Clean, cozy seating inside Yeoyejeong

Thanks to the quiet, unhurried atmosphere visible through the windows, it's also a solid pick for a family gathering or a date.

What we ordered at Yeoyejeong: chuck flap tail for two, pot rice and kimchi stew

At Yeoyejeong we ordered two servings of chuck flap tail (salchisal), plus pot rice and kimchi stew. The marinated ribs are famous here too, but the place clearly takes such pride in its meat that I went with the salchisal instead. Yeoyejeong really delivers on value for money!

Table spread with chuck flap tail

They apparently use salt-aged beef along with a special kind of charcoal.

Why Yeoyejeong grills over coffee-wood bijangtan charcoal

They use coffee-wood bijangtan charcoal, which costs 2–3 times more than regular charcoal. It doesn't spark, so it's reassuring with kids around, and even when fat drips onto it, it doesn't flare up or produce much smoke — so your clothes end up barely smelling like smoke and the meal stays clean.

Where Yeoyejeong's lettuce and side dishes come from

You could feel real care in the side dishes and vegetables served with the meat. The lettuce for wrapping comes from a year-round contract with pesticide-free, sterile hydroponic smart farm lettuce grown by the Yangyang-gun Association for the Disabled. Eating it felt like taking part in something good, which warmed my heart even more.

The peppers and vegetables used in the side dishes are apparently either grown directly on fields in Yangyang or sourced fresh from Yangyang Market. Maybe that's why every single side dish felt clean and made from fresh ingredients.

Chuck flap tail at Yeoyejeong: marbling and charcoal aroma

Yeoyejeong's salchisal drew a gasp the moment it arrived, with marbling packed in tight.

You could tell at a glance the meat quality was excellent.

They grill it carefully over the charcoal haha.

Garlic and mushrooms went on the grill along with it.

Cooked just lightly on the grill and taken in one bite, the savory juices bursting from the marbling and the tender texture were truly outstanding.

The meat really melted in my mouth.

Cross-section of grilled chuck flap tail

No gamy smell, not chewy at all, and full of charcoal aroma — completely my style!

Chuck flap tail served with salt and wasabi

The meat's quality was so good on its own that even with just a touch of wasabi and salt, you could taste its natural flavor fully. I really recommend the salt-and-wasabi combo! I never expected to find the best salchisal of my life in Yangyang!

Lettuce wrap with ssamjang and chives

Wrapped in fresh lettuce with just ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) and chives on top, it's also delicious.

Make sure to also try the pot rice (sotbap), with its deep, savory flavor, and the spicy kimchi stew (kimchi jjigae) at Yeoyejeong.

Kimchi stew bubbling in an earthenware pot

The spicy, deep kimchi stew is genuinely appealing — its hot, tangy broth cuts right through the rich fattiness of the salchisal.

Kimchi stew broth packed with ingredients

Simmered a long time for deep flavor and packed generously with ingredients, it holds its own against any dedicated kimchi stew restaurant.

Being able to eat freshly cooked pot rice at such a reasonable price is one of this place's biggest strengths!

Freshly made pot rice

They first scoop out the fluffy, glossy rice, then pour warm water into the pot to make a scorched rice crust (nurungji).

I really loved this nurungji!

Savory and deep-flavored, it goes perfectly with both the meat and the kimchi stew!

Who Yeoyejeong in Yangyang suits best

With its charming atmosphere plus excellent meat quality and side dishes, Yeoyejeong is a Yangyang restaurant that had it all. If you're traveling in Yangyang and looking for a proper, special meal at a meat restaurant run with real philosophy, I strongly recommend visiting at least once. 👍
