With that pleasantly cool morning and evening breeze, I went out for some samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) to build up my strength! This time I visited Oi Samgyetang Bucheon Main Branch in Sangdong. It's been running since 1997, so it's known as one of the longer-standing samgyetang places in Bucheon. We went around 6pm on a Sunday, and maybe because it was weekend evening, there were quite a lot of customers.

Oi Samgyetang offers its signature herbal mung bean samgyetang along with lacquer tree chicken soup, chaga mushroom samgyetang, whole boiled chicken (dakbaeksuk), and more! After some deliberation we both ordered the same thing — 🍲 herbal mung bean samgyetang ₩18,000 × 2. Besides the herbal mung bean version, there's chaga mushroom samgyetang and lacquer tree chicken soup too, so you can pick according to taste.

Inside Oi Samgyetang: private rooms and the waiting area

Spacious dining room on the 2nd floor

Oi Samgyetang is on the 2nd floor, and once inside, the space was bigger than I expected! There's also a self-serve bar.

There are quite a lot of tables, plus separate private rooms, so it looked good for family meals or larger groups. Since samgyetang restaurants often see visits with elderly family members, the spacious layout seemed like it'd be comfortable for that kind of gathering too.

And near the entrance there's a separate waiting area. Since it's such a long-running Bucheon samgyetang restaurant, apparently there can be a wait during busy hours.

After ordering and waiting a bit, the basic side dishes were set out first. They served kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) that go well with samgyetang, plus cucumber, pickled onion, and other clean, refreshing side dishes. Fittingly for a place named Oi Samgyetang (oi means cucumber), the crunchy cucumber dipped in ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) was a nice combo.

The side dishes were also full of savory flavor and pretty clean overall!

How did the herbal mung bean samgyetang taste?

Finally, the herbal mung bean samgyetang arrived! It came out bubbling in a stone pot, and warm steam rose up the moment it hit the table.

A whole chicken was in there, with sticky rice stuffed inside, so scooping it up with the broth made for a hearty, filling meal.

The chicken meat fell off the bone easily with just a light touch of the chopsticks,

and as you eat through the chicken, the sticky rice inside comes out too — soft and filling after soaking up all that broth. Being a herbal samgyetang, the broth had a subtle scent of medicinal herbs compared to regular samgyetang, and overall it felt rich and savory! The broth itself wasn't overwhelmingly strong, more like the herbal aroma quietly rose up with each spoonful.

Who should eat at Oi Samgyetang Bucheon Main Branch?

Even at 6pm on the Sunday we visited, there were quite a lot of customers, but since the space itself is so large, it wasn't too uncomfortable to eat. And most of all, since parking is available and there are private rooms inside, it seemed like a good spot to come with family to build up strength!!

  • Anyone who likes samgyetang with a noticeable herbal aroma
  • Anyone looking for a place to eat with parents

if any of that describes you, Oi Samgyetang Bucheon Main Branch might be worth checking out. Even visiting on a Sunday evening, there were plenty of customers, which really showed how long this samgyetang place has been established in Bucheon. We left having had a hearty bowl of herbal samgyetang :)
