Korean beef restaurant near Jeonju Zoo: skirt steak at Hoseongjeong

In short

Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant is a hanwoo (Korean beef) butcher's restaurant on the main road in Hoseong-dong, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, a short drive from Jeonju Zoo. Over a work-trip dinner, we grilled anchangsal (skirt steak), salchisal (flat iron) and bujaesal (chuck flap) in that order, adding bean sprouts to the grill on the owner's recommendation. With no table charge and soju at 2,000 won and beer at 2,500 won, Hoseongjeong is an easy place to eat premium hanwoo cuts without spending much.

Where is Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant?

The restaurant is called Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant, located at 1F, 811 Dongbu-daero, Hoseong-dong 1-ga, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, Jeonbuk.

Getting to Hoseongjeong and where to park

It's right on a main road, so it's very easy to find with navigation. It's also close to Jeonju Zoo~ the restaurant is in Hoseong-dong, you know.

There's dedicated free parking right in front of the store, and when I asked what to do if it's full, they said you can park at Samdeok Electric across the street — you'd have to cross the crosswalk, but the lot is spacious. That's what we did. No need to stress about parking haha. The second photo is of the crosswalk!

Hoseongjeong menu and prices

Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant serves anchangsal, salchisal, bujaesal, kkotdeungsim, galbisal, chimasal, yukhoe bibimbap, galbitang, beef bulgogi jeongol, and more. Since it's a butcher's restaurant, the menu board also lists side dishes and lunch specials,

True to a butcher's restaurant, the meat has prices tagged right on it~~

Soju at ₩2,000 and beer at ₩2,500 is a beautiful price. Back in college when I drank a lot, I hunted down cheap drink spots, and even those were pricier than this. Sadly we drove, so we didn't drink soju or beer ourselves~~

Instead, we crushed the meat~~ We came specifically to properly demolish some hanwoo, so we carefully picked out the tasty cuts — anchangsal, salchisal, and bujaesal — and grilled them up nicely!

They also sell raw beef slaughtered that same day, which is the moment you really feel how fresh this place's beef is~~

What makes Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant different

  • A butcher's restaurant that sources and cuts good raw meat in-house, so you get fresh hanwoo specialty cuts without distribution markups
  • No separate table charge, so you can enjoy quality beef generously at a reasonable price
  • Open year-round with no break time, with private rooms, group seating (up to 50), baby chairs, and wheelchair facilities
  • Free corkage, making it great for family meals or gatherings where you want to pair beef with your own drinks

How were the side dishes and seaweed soup?

Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant serves boiled tea instead of plain water from the start. As I often mention, when even the water is served as freshly boiled tea, my opinion of a place goes up before I've even eaten. Of course, most of you are probably reading my writing for the first time, so to cut to the chase — I was happy that even the default water looked this nice~!

A bowl of savory seaweed soup

Among the various side dishes that came out, I especially loved the sesame oil with wasabi — the flavor was great. On top of that, the seaweed soup was packed with savory depth. I'm sure some people drink more than usual here because the soju and beer are so cheap, but this soup had that brain-piercing umami that keeps things delicious from the first sip to the last~

What order to grill skirt steak, flat iron and chuck flap

At Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant we grilled anchangsal, salchisal, and bujaesal in that order. Once you heat up the grill with the fat trimmings — or whatever that stuff is —

Anchangsal placed on the grill

The staff actually told us to eat in the order bujaesal >> salchisal >> anchangsal, so that the tastiest cut comes last and it's delicious start to finish. But after some serious deliberation with the colleague I traveled with, we decided to grill the anchangsal first.

When it comes to strawberry cream cake, I'm the type who eats the strawberries first. In short, I eat the best thing first. There's a world of difference between eating something delicious on an empty stomach versus after you're already somewhat full.

Beef served together with a bowl of rice

True to my rice-loving nature, I ate the beef with a bowl of rice. Such delicious beef. Beef is always good no matter when you eat it, but especially anchangsal — since it's such a rare cut, some places don't even carry it — and I think anchangsal really is the tastiest cut of beef.

Raw salchisal showing heavy marbling

Then the salchisal we ate next — at a glance you can see the marbling scattered throughout, and you can practically taste the nutty richness of the fat just by looking at it.

Once grilled, the fat layer looks even more delicious~

Grilling bean sprouts with the beef: the owner's tip

After we'd eaten for a while, the owner told us that grilling beansprouts alongside the meat is a special treat, so we tossed them right on. There's a reason behind the owner's recommendation.

And then finally, the bujaesal to finish it off~~

Bujaesal grilled together with beansprouts

When the beansprouts hit just the right point, the depth and nutty flavor doubled. I highly recommend you all put beansprouts on the grill first.

Cola instead of alcohol~ A slightly wild, as they say these days, night in Jeonju~

Is there a wait, and should you book?

Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant has plenty of seating so there probably isn't much of a wait, but we made a reservation anyway~~ I hastily snapped photos since that's just my personality, but there were quite a lot of people.

Also, our business trip destination was a bit far, so it felt like we crossed all of Jeonju to get here — and evenings in Jeonju get pretty congested. If you're planning to visit, keep in mind that Jeonju has busy stretches during evening hours, so I'd recommend adjusting your reservation time accordingly~~

Hoseongjeong Butcher's Restaurant: the verdict

Whenever you're craving hanwoo specialty cuts that melt in your mouth, this is the place! Anchangsal, salchisal, and bujaesal, all fresh beef with no gamey smell, enjoyed without worrying about a table charge or drink prices — a must-visit beef spot in Jeonju.
