Anguk date spot: tomato salad and gnocchi at Concasse Anguk

In short

Concasse Anguk is an Italian restaurant in a 100-year-old hanok on Bukchon-ro in Jongno, Seoul. Visiting as a pair after an exhibition at MMCA Seoul, the writer ordered lasagna (₩23,000), tomato salad (₩12,000), and potato gnocchi (₩19,000), each dish distinct in character. With a no-kids policy and staff who can handle foreign languages, it suits both date nights and meals with international guests.

I went to see the Do Ho Suh exhibition at MMCA Seoul a while back, and paired it with a visit to a restaurant near Anguk Station. ✨ I wanted a meal as special as the exhibition, and wow, it totally delivered! 💗

Distinctive menu items you can't find anywhere else, plus the unique atmosphere of a hanok — it looked like a great date spot. On top of that, the staff at Concasse Anguk were so kind that the service was fully satisfying too. If I go see another exhibition around here, I'm pretty sure I'll come back 😊

How long was the weekday lunch wait?

I visited on a weekday. I got there around 1pm and the place was already full... so I put my name down and waited at a nearby café until my table was ready. On weekdays, if you go just slightly off the main meal times, you probably won't have to wait at all. It seemed like a place with a lot of international visitors too!

A 100-year-old hanok turned restaurant, solo dining welcome

This restaurant was converted from a hanok (traditional Korean house). They said it's 100 years old. I loved that quiet, timeworn hanok feel. What used to be the courtyard now has a glass ceiling over it, turning it into a dining space for guests — that's the vibe I got. Solo visits are possible too, since there's a distinctive U-shaped table.

Two of us, three dishes ordered

We came as a pair. We ordered three dishes: lasagna ₩23,000, tomato salad ₩12,000, and potato gnocchi ₩19,000! If you take part in the receipt review event, you get an ade drink on the house. 💗 The ade is really tasty. Definitely join the event. 😊

Tomato salad, ₩12,000

The salad arrived first among what we ordered. The tomato salad — I'd heard so many compliments about it that I was really curious. That pale green sauce, I think it was wasabi sauce? It went together in an unexpectedly great way, fresh and bright.

I wondered whether two people ordering three dishes would be too much, but the salad was so bright and refreshing that it balanced everything else out nicely. And even after getting full, I kept reaching for more of it. It's a flavor I'd never had before, hard to put into words honestly...😅 A taste with real character, unique to this place.

Potato gnocchi, ₩19,000, crispy outside and tender inside

Next came the potato gnocchi 💗 I love gnocchi so much I've traveled to other regions just for it... and living up to this restaurant's reputation for pasta near Anguk Station, this one was amazing. The visual alone was overwhelming!

Close-up of the black gnocchi and cream sauce

That leaf-shaped thing in the middle, the brown one, was mushroom. And below it there was a poached egg, I think. The gnocchi felt like it had a high potato content. The flavor was deep and the texture was really good too. Crispy outside, and so, so soft inside. How did they make it black? Squid ink? Black sesame? I'm curious what ingredient they used. The unusual color made it stand out, but the taste stayed consistent throughout. The cream sauce had real depth — a rich, velvety flavor with real character. You could just tell it was made with good ingredients and a lot of care.

Fresh lasagna stood on its side, ₩23,000

Last came this place's signature dish, the lasagna. It's known for its lasagna and has even been featured on TV, and this dish also caught the eye instantly with its striking presentation. The lasagna was styled standing upright.

It's made with fresh pasta sheets, apparently, and the flavor was clean and delicious. And the rich, deep flavor inside the sheets! I think the fresh, green arugula and cream sauce came together to complete an even more special taste. Even though the flavor was this rich and deep, it wasn't salty at all — it felt wholesome.

Overall thoughts after trying all three dishes

Every dish was so good it was impossible to rank them. Each one had its own strong character. It felt great to be able to enjoy so many different dishes as a pair, haha — it has a fusion feel that international visitors would probably love too. And I don't think there's a Korean out there who wouldn't like it either. It's Western-style food but without any greasiness, which I loved, and the texture of the gnocchi, the fresh pasta texture of the lasagna, and the overall pasta quality were all excellent.

They gave us arugula on the house, so we had plenty to go with the food right up to the end. ✨

Complimentary plate of arugula

Next time I want to try the other menu items too. There's so much I want to eat! Honestly I want to try everything...🥲 Each dish is bursting with its own character, and between the visuals, the flavors, and the service, none of which you'd find elsewhere, this is a memorable restaurant. Since the staff can also speak foreign languages, international visitors can visit comfortably too. If a friend from abroad comes to visit me, I want to bring them to Concasse and show them that Korea has restaurants this good! Super delicious, and highly recommended as a date spot ✨
