Figurine-filled Japanese restaurant in Hapjeong: Makise Hapjeong

In short

Makise Hapjeong is a kaisendon (sashimi rice bowl) restaurant on Poeun-ro 2na-gil near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. Two of us ordered one kaisendon and one ebi sake-don (shrimp and salmon bowl) and shared them, and the thick-cut sashimi with no fishy smell was the most satisfying part. Between the figurines and photos filling the shop and the open view of the cooking, Makise Hapjeong is worth a return trip for a Hapjeong date or a meal with a friend.

Today I'm introducing a kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) restaurant in Hapjeong that I really loved!

First photo from visiting Makise Hapjeong, a kaisendon restaurant in Hapjeong

This time I went to Makise. To cut to the chase — I really want to recommend this place! 🥹💗 Lately I've been having fun hunting down good kaisendon spots, and this one had me thinking "wow, this is really good" the moment I took a bite. Above all, the quality of the sashimi was excellent.

Is the sashimi at Makise Hapjeong thick-cut and free of fishy smell?

The sashimi on Makise Hapjeong's kaisendon isn't the style with many thin slices piled up — each piece comes cut thick. There was almost no fishy smell either, so it felt like a place even people sensitive to fishy taste could enjoy without worry.

When I eat kaisendon, how fresh the sashimi is matters most to me. At Makise there was almost no fishy smell, and best of all the sashimi was cut quite thick! Rather than feeling like several thin slices piled on top, it felt like properly eating each piece one at a time. 🤭 The texture of the sashimi really came through in my mouth, and eating it with the rice, the sashimi's presence was strong and satisfying.

With kaisendon, the freshness and quality of each individual ingredient matters, and personally the sashimi I had that day was really to my taste. It felt like a place even people sensitive to fishy flavors could enjoy comfortably! 🤍

And the food looked so pretty when it arrived that I couldn't help but take photos 📸✨ Colorful seafood piled generously on rice made my mouth water just looking at it.

Kaisendon and ebi sake-don, our order for two

At Makise Hapjeong we ordered one kaisendon and one ebi sake-don. By each getting a different menu item and sharing bites, we got to taste a much wider variety of sashimi.

That day we ordered two menu items!

One kaisendon, one ebi sake-don! 🦐🐟

A bowl of kaisendon topped with several kinds of sashimi

First, the kaisendon let us enjoy several kinds of sashimi at once, so it really showed off the charm of kaisendon. With the sashimi piled on thick, taking a big bite with the rice was genuinely delicious. 🥹

And the other one I really enjoyed was the ebi sake-don! It's a menu where you get shrimp and salmon together, so it seems like a good option for anyone who wants to try a variety of sashimi. Since we ordered different things, we got to share bites with each other, which was oddly fun too haha

What's the atmosphere like inside Makise Hapjeong?

The moment you step into Makise Hapjeong, it feels like you've walked into Japan. Cute figurines and photos are displayed all around, so there was fun in just looking around too.

Beyond the food, I really liked Makise's shop atmosphere too. Stepping in, it strongly felt like being in Japan. 🇯🇵

Cute figurines placed around the shop

Cute figurines and photos are displayed all over the shop, so there was fun in browsing around too. Rather than just a plain restaurant where you eat and leave, it's a space decorated with charming little details, which made it feel even more endearing. I love restaurants with these small details, and Makise was exactly my type in that regard too. 🤎

We could also see the cooking happening right in front of us, so there was a bit of fun in watching the process of the food being made.

Why I'd recommend Makise for kaisendon in Hapjeong

If you're looking for kaisendon in Hapjeong, I'd like to recommend giving Makise a try! The sashimi wasn't fishy and felt fresh, and above all I really liked the thick-cut texture and the good quality. On top of that, the cute Japan-like shop atmosphere added a bit of fun to look around while enjoying a delicious meal. 🫶🏻

Above all, after eating that day I genuinely thought "I want to come back here again ㅠㅠ." 🥹 Next time I'm in Hapjeong, I want to visit Makise again and try other menu items!

If you like thick, fresh sashimi, I think you'll probably be satisfied! ✨ The food is good and the atmosphere is cute, so it seems like a great spot for a date in Hapjeong or a nice meal with a friend! 🫶🏻
