Weekday lunch for two at Goyu, a hanok Korean restaurant in Gyeongju

In short

Goyu is a Korean restaurant with a hanok exterior on Sajeong-ro in the Hwangnidan-gil area of Gyeongju. On a weekday lunch visit with a friend, the order was cold jeyuk (chilled boiled pork) kale ssambap with thick doenjang, hanwoo beef tartare bibim buckwheat noodles and eggplant gangjeong, with kimchi and beef radish soup served as standard. Three dishes were more than enough food for two to share, so Goyu is a good choice for a neat, well-made Korean meal in Gyeongju.

I went on a trip to Gyeongju with a friend to switch things up, and we stopped by Goyu, a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil that's been super hot on social media lately! Walking through the Hwangnidan-gil alleys, the serene hanok (traditional Korean house) exterior instantly caught my eye — I'd already been curious about this new hotspot from seeing it on Instagram before the trip, so we walked right in without a second thought ✨

What kind of place is Goyu? A hanok Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju

Goyu is a Korean restaurant located at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, in the Hwangnidan-gil alley. It carries that distinctly quiet, hanok atmosphere unique to this neighborhood, and the classic, pretty exterior made it a great photo spot!

Stepping inside, warm sunlight poured in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the whole space was clean and well-kept! The tables were spaced comfortably too, making it a perfect spot for a laid-back lunch chat with a friend on Hwangnidan-gil 💡

Is there a wait at Goyu on a weekday lunch?

When I visited, it was a weekday lunch so there wasn't a wait — but since it's such a popular new spot on Hwangnidan-gil, if you're visiting on a weekend, it might be worth checking the wait via Table-ing beforehand!

Goyu's menu and the three dishes ordered

After we sat down, I looked over the menu first! It carried Goyu's own tidy philosophy — something like 'the care and skill passed down from Grandmother Park's hands, reinterpreted with a modern touch by her grandson Han.' There were unique, hearty Korean dishes along with a variety of traditional liquors and drinks, so it was fun just to browse!

Among all those options, after some deliberation, we ordered a solid combination of everything we'd most wanted to try haha

  • Cold jeyuk (boiled pork) kale ssambap with doenjang (fermented soybean paste)
  • Hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) bibim buckwheat noodles
  • Eggplant gangjeong (sweet-savory glazed eggplant)
  • Cola & cider
Default kimchi and beef radish soup served at Goyu

Kimchi and beef radish soup came as the default setting — the kimchi paired well with the Korean dishes, and the beef radish soup was rich and delicious.

The kale ssambap (wrapped rice) was the dish I was most looking forward to at Goyu! It came out with the kale wrapped into cute round bundles, served with salty, savory doenjang and tender cold jeyuk.

The combination of the crisp kale and the savory doenjang was really nice, and adding a piece of the soft cold jeyuk on top made the seasoning land perfectly 🥺❤️ If you're looking for a tidy, classic Korean dish on Hwangnidan-gil, this clean flavor would appeal to just about anyone!

Eggplant gangjeong ordered as a side at Goyu

Eggplant gangjeong (crispy glazed eggplant)

The eggplant gangjeong we ordered as a side turned out to be a real standout! The fried eggplant was crispy outside and moist inside, coated in a sweet-savory glaze that got more fragrant the more we chewed.

It was appealing enough that even people who don't usually enjoy eggplant could eat it without hesitation ✨ Adding some cool cola and cider along the way brought in some fizz and kept things clean and grease-free!

The batter wasn't too thick, so it was extra crispy, and the sauce was sweet and tasty. Plus the eggplant was so soft it practically melted — a dish I wanted to eat again.

Hanwoo beef tartare bibim buckwheat noodles

These were bibim buckwheat noodles piled high with fresh hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe! Actually, when you search for Gyeongju restaurants, you find a lot of hanwoo yukhoe bibim noodles or mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) spots, so I was glad to find one at Goyu too haha

I mixed the sauce in well, piled the buckwheat noodles and yukhoe together, and took a big bite — the nutty, chewy buckwheat noodles, the spicy-sweet special sauce, and the tender texture of the yukhoe all came together for a burst of umami that filled my mouth 👍 It wasn't too intense but kept me reaching for more, so I'd strongly recommend it as a Hwangnidan-gil lunch dish!

Verdict: were three dishes enough food for two at Goyu?

My friend and I ordered these three dishes in full, and the portions were genuinely generous and the combination worked well, so we left super full and very satisfied! It wasn't just pretty to look at — every ingredient felt fresh and made with care, so I was happy the whole time I was eating haha

I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the hanok atmosphere unique to Hwangnidan-gil while enjoying a tidy, hearty Korean meal! If it fits your route while traveling in Gyeongju, definitely stop by Goyu for a satisfying meal 💕
