Gukbap and milmyeon in one place in Seomyeon: back at Sanbandeul
Whenever I try to grab a meal in Seomyeon, there are so many options that deciding actually takes longer than eating. One place I visited before and really liked was Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap. Busan has no shortage of pork gukbap spots, but this one stuck in my memory not just for the soup but for surprisingly good milmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) too, so I went back after a while. These days when it's hot out, I don't just want a bowl of hot soup — I also crave something cold and refreshing, and I like that this place lets you get both in one spot. Add homemade fried chicken and grilled suyuk on top and you've got a pretty hearty meal. This time again I ordered a bunch, from gukbap to sides, and it was, as expected, an easy Seomyeon, Busan restaurant to come back to.

Where Sanbandeul's Seomyeon main branch is, and first impressions
Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap's Seomyeon main branch sits near Bujeon Library, so it's fairly easy to reach whether you're coming from Seomyeon or Jeonpo. You could swing by after hanging out in Seomyeon, or stop in for a meal while wandering the Jeonpo café street. The first thing you notice arriving is the big red signboard. These days it's getting harder to find a meal under ₩10,000 in Seomyeon, so on that value front alone this is an easy Seomyeon, Busan restaurant to walk into.

Bar seats for solo diners, regular tables inside
From the outside, the signboard makes you expect a plain, typical gukbap joint, but once you step in, the atmosphere is nicer than you'd guess. The lighting isn't overly bright, it's kept a bit dim, and combined with the wood-toned interior it actually feels quite calm. There's a long bar-style counter facing the kitchen, which is comfortable if you're dining solo. Regular tables are set up further inside, fine for two or more. I could eat alone here without feeling self-conscious, the way I did, and it also works for a group spreading out gukbap and sides across a table. It's an amusing Seomyeon, Busan restaurant where the interior turns out to be quite different from the first impression the signboard gives.

Sanbandeul menu: gukbap varieties, milmyeon and sides
Ordering is done via kiosk. The menu covers several types of gukbap, from the basic bone broth pork gukbap to Sanbandeul pork gukbap, spicy pork gukbap, and miso pork gukbap. The base gukbap prices are relatively easy on the wallet, and there's also a set that bundles gukbap with grilled suyuk, fried chicken and king mandu (dumplings). There's mul-milmyeon and bibim-milmyeon too, especially welcome in summer, plus sides like homemade fried chicken or grilled suyuk you can order separately. You could just eat a quick bowl of gukbap and leave, or come with a group and add a side each. With both gukbap and milmyeon on offer, it's a Seomyeon, Busan restaurant with a wide range of choices.

What we ordered at Sanbandeul that day
That day I ordered the miso pork gukbap with extra meat, plus mul-milmyeon and a large order of homemade fried chicken. I also tried the grilled suyuk that came with the set. Once everything arrived, the table filled up quite nicely. On one side sat a gukbap piled high with meat, and on the other, a big bowl of mul-milmyeon, along with crispy fried chicken and grilled suyuk — basically a spread of pretty much everything you can get at a gukbap restaurant. I especially liked being able to alternate between the hot soup and the cold noodles.

How much pork do you get with extra meat in the miso gukbap?
The dish I was most looking forward to this time was the miso pork gukbap. Unlike a typical milky-white pork gukbap, this one has miso stirred in, giving the broth a deep, savory richness. That said, it's not like doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) where the paste flavor dominates — it's more like the savoriness of the miso naturally blends into the rich pork broth. Most importantly, since I ordered extra meat, there really was a lot of it. Every spoonful came up with meat attached, so I never once felt like it was skimping. On top of that, I loaded in the chives that came with it without holding back, and honestly that combination was the best part for me. The chives wilt slightly in the hot broth, adding fragrance, and scooping them up together with the meat felt like a proper meal. If you like pork gukbap but are a little tired of it always tasting the same, the miso version at this Seomyeon, Busan restaurant is worth trying.

Mul-milmyeon, the cold noodles we added on a hot day
Mul-milmyeon was exactly the right menu for this hot weather. It arrives in a large bowl with plenty of cold broth, topped generously with meat, cucumber, radish and other garnishes. Mixing the noodles into the broth and taking a bite, the cold, clean flavor hits first — great for eating in between spoonfuls of gukbap. The noodles are springy and pleasantly chewy, and the broth isn't overly sharp, so it's easy to keep eating. It's the polar opposite of the hot, rich miso pork gukbap, so ordering both together turned out to be a pretty good call. At some gukbap restaurants, milmyeon is just a summer afterthought, but Sanbandeul is a place I already found genuinely good at milmyeon from my last visit.

How were the large homemade fried chicken and flame-grilled suyuk?
The homemade fried chicken comes as large chunks of chicken coated in batter and fried crispy, and the portion is bigger than expected. The outside is crunchy while the inside stays moist, so it's good plain, and dipping it in the accompanying sauce gives it a richer flavor. It was a perfect side when just gukbap or milmyeon alone felt like it wasn't quite enough. The grilled suyuk (pork slices), true to its name, has a hint of charred flavor on the surface, giving it a different feel from typical boiled suyuk. It's suyuk with one extra point added — grilling — the kind of thing that's usually found at gukbap restaurants, so it's worth considering if you're picking one side to add.
A Seomyeon restaurant that does gukbap, milmyeon and sides equally well
Sanbandeul on a second visit: the verdict
Coming back to Sanbandeul Pork Gukbap's Seomyeon main branch after a while, I again liked how many menu options there were. Busan has plenty of places that do pork gukbap well, but Sanbandeul feels less like a spot you visit purely for the gukbap and more like a place to enjoy gukbap, milmyeon and sides all at once. The miso pork gukbap I had this time had a savory charm distinct from the regular pork gukbap, and with extra meat added, the portion was substantial enough to fill me up. The combination of piling in chives with the meat was satisfying too. The mul-milmyeon was cool and clean, great for hot weather, and adding the homemade fried chicken and grilled suyuk on top made for a properly full spread for a gukbap restaurant. The location near Bujeon Library also makes it convenient from both Seomyeon and Jeonpo, and having both bar seating good for solo dining and regular tables is a plus. The interior is nicer than it looks from outside too, so it's a pleasant place to sit down for a clean meal. It's less a place you'd seek out for a special occasion and more a comfortable Seomyeon, Busan restaurant to walk into when you're stuck on what to eat. If you, like me, like both gukbap and milmyeon, you're unlikely to go wrong with the menu here, and having enjoyed it before and come back, I again left satisfied without any complaints. If you're looking for an affordable gukbap or milmyeon meal around Seomyeon or Jeonpo, this is a Seomyeon, Busan restaurant worth returning to.
