Levi's 501 sizing at Seoul Denim, a Dongdaemun vintage denim store

In short

Seoul Denim is a vintage Levi's store on Cheonhodae-ro 45-gagil in Dongdaemun, Seoul. The writer walked in hoping for a 505, found the right sizes clustered in the 501s instead, tried candidates A6467 and A6436 back to back, and took home the A6436 in 34/34 for its longer inseam. Because two pairs marked 32 can measure completely differently, listing the numbers from Seoul Denim's website before the visit saves a lot of time.

This is my first time doing anything like a sponsored visit, so I went and read a bunch of posts by senior bloggers who've done this before — way too many of them take the discount and then let AI churn out the actual post. I'm writing this myself so I don't become another AI slop generator tanking Naver's stock price. Gotta do what you gotta do.

What kind of store is Seoul Denim?

Seoul Denim is a vintage Levi's shop in Dongdaemun. If you find current Levi's too shiny-new, or you're used to hand-me-downs from an older brother so used clothes don't bother you, or the sizing on current-line products just doesn't work for you — vintage Levi's is a good direction now.

I wasn't happy with a pair of 567s I'd bought before, so I was digging around online trying to grab a 501 or 505, and a good opportunity came up so I went straight there. They also sell on Bunjang, Fruits, and their own website, so if visiting in person is a hassle, keep that in mind. But honestly, trying things on in person gives you a much better sense of sizing, and the staff are friendly, so I'd recommend visiting if you can.

There's also a skirt/shorts corner, FYI.

Why two Levi's pairs marked 32 measure differently

At Seoul Denim every pair of pants has a tag, and they're hung on racks grouped by size. But here's the thing with vintage Levi's — even within the same size 32, the actual measurements are all over the place.

Thigh, length, all these little things differ subtly, so you really have to look up the detailed measurements on the website.

How to list the pairs you want before you go

There's no way you're going to search through all those pants one by one in the shop, and if you try on everything that looks roughly right, you'll burn the whole day. So make a list before you go — like a crazy organized planner type. Seriously, at minimum do this:

  • 1) Target model — 501, 505, 527, 568, etc. You should already have a rough model in mind. Honestly if you're the type to buy denim there, you probably already know this.
  • 2) Your own size — at least waist, hip, thigh circumference measured.

The world's a good place now. Just open an AI app (free version works fine), enter the measurements and pain points of denim you already own, plus your actual lower body measurements — just these two things — and describe the fit feeling you want, and it'll work out reasonable numbers for you. If that's too much trouble, just entering your body measurements alone should be enough.

Then, with those numbers, tell it "find all the pants on the Seoul Denim site matching these conditions that aren't sold out" and it'll dutifully go dig them up for you. Write those down in your notes app and go test them — done.

Notes made before the visit listing 501 candidate measurements
MBTI: P

I originally had 505s in mind, but it turned out the sizes I wanted were all clustered in 501s. Like I said above, even the same model has wildly different actual measurements, so it's good to make a table ahead of time.

Also, since this is a specialty denim shop, the measurement reliability is pretty high. I had an experience recently where I trusted the measurements listed in a Fruits listing and bought blind, and when I got it and tried it on it felt like some old ajeossi jeans from decades ago. So this kind of solid measurement system is really appreciated.

Trying on vintage Levi's 501 A6467
Checking the length and fit of the 501 A6467

A6467 vs A6436: the final 501 try-on

ChatGPT's top pick was A6467. Since I'd be wearing it a bit low, the waist could run large, but the length was a little short. Chain-wallet fail. Still not bad though, so it stayed on as a candidate.

Front fading and patch condition of the A6436

After trying on all the others, I landed on A6436 last. Judging by the patch condition, this one's clearly been through some rough life — in a good way. The front fading is nice, and the length is generous, which I liked. Current-line Levi's almost never come in 34/34, so I hit the jackpot. Score.

Three final candidate pairs of Levi's 501

So here's the final audition. After going back and forth between three, I bought the A6436 for its length. I'll basically be living in these for a while.

Deciding between the three 501 pairs

Standing there deciding between three pairs of 501s felt exactly like this — but they really are different. Don't just buy blind online and end up with an awkward fit, or get fooled by some stick-thin model's fit pics into buying pants that don't fit you. If you can, try everything on first.
