I visited and tasted at Morakmorak Home & Cook, a cheap and delicious butcher shop in Star Plaza in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. It's a 5-minute walk from Ansan Lotte Mart and also close to Jungang-dong, so if you're looking for good meat it's worth a visit. I took photos of the meat cuts and prices too, so use them to shop smart ♡

Where is Morakmorak Home & Cook? Hours and parking

Morakmorak Home & Cook is on the basement floor of Star Plaza in Seongpo-dong, Ansan, open daily 9:00–20:30, closed only on Lunar New Year and Chuseok days. Parking is covered by the Star Plaza lot.

There are many restaurants in the Star Plaza basement, and Morakmorak Home & Cook has its spot among them.

They source hanwoo (Korean beef) and hanpork (Korean pork) weekly and sell it after proper aging, at its best. Since it's a butcher shop, they'll also prep the meat however you want. Plus it's run by a young owner who was really friendly, no pushy upselling, and I never felt awkward buying just a small amount haha.

You can buy raw meat here, but what caught my eye first was the handmade marinated meats and the hanwoo bone broth dishes that a lot of reviews praised.

Display case prices: tteokgalbi from 2,500 won

The hanwoo-hanpork handmade tteokgalbi (grilled meat patties) is 80% domestic meat yet only ₩2,500 — apparently ready in just 90 seconds in the microwave. Buy 4 get 1 free means 5 patties for ₩10,000, which is a great price for high-meat-content domestic tteokgalbi.

Morak's signature hanwoo yukhoe sashimi. The yukhoe is ₩9,900 and comes with minced garlic. You just drizzle on some sesame oil and it's done. This is actually one of the items I bought — check the bottom of the review for my tasting notes!

Jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), bulgogi, LA galbi, and jjim galbi. All the marinated meats looked fresh. Check the photos for prices. Even the cases holding the marinated meats were kept nice and clean, which I liked.

Dak galbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and soy sauce jeyuk bokkeum. The chicken pieces in the dak galbi were big, and a lot of them looked like nice tender cuts.

Pack of spicy boneless dakbal with cheongyang chili

Boneless dakbal and yangnyeom galbi. The spicy boneless dakbal loaded with cheongyang chili is 400g for ₩9,900, great for late-night snacking. Being boneless, the price per gram is really good. The yangnyeom galbi was laid out so neatly it looked super appetizing, so I bought two pieces — came out to ₩10,440.

Galbitang, the bestseller: chilled or frozen?

Galbitang packed with hanwoo meat is a popular item at Morakmorak Home & Cook. There's a fresh version ready to eat right away, and a frozen version that keeps longer. They say they win on the amount of meat, and at ₩12,000 with meat packed in, it does look like a great deal. I picked up a frozen one myself since I wasn't eating it right away :)

Frozen meats and various meat-based soups. Shabu-shabu meats, seolleongtang, and gomtang are all portioned out, good for grabbing one or two at a time to stock the fridge.

Water-aged hanwoo beef and the Korean pork grill set

Water-aged hanwoo. The fridge had fresh hanwoo, and you could also buy it as a gift set. Price tags and gram weights are attached, so you can compare easily without asking.

Photos of Morakmorak's hanpork and water-aged beef. The hanpork mixed grill set is ₩19,800, good if you want to grill up a variety pack. You could also spot meat mid water-aging on one side of the fridge.

What was bought this time: yukhoe, wangpo galbi, galbitang

  • Yukhoe ₩9,900
  • Wangpo galbi ₩10,440
  • Galbitang ₩12,000

I brought home Morakmorak's yukhoe, which was hefty with a generous amount of meat, plus scallion shreds to eat with the galbi and glass noodles for the galbitang, all given as freebies. They'll pack it in a styrofoam box if you're traveling far or need it — just ask.

Here's the fresh yukhoe I bought for ₩9,900.

The yukhoe seemed to already have a basic seasoning, so I just added the minced garlic that came with it and finished it with sesame oil, like the owner told me to.

The meat was really firm and thick, so just a few bites filled my mouth. It was chewy with great savoriness, and even though the portion was generous, I finished it right there on the spot :) I'm definitely buying this again next time I visit Morakmorak!

Scallion shreds and sesame sauce given as freebies

They also gave me scallion shreds and 4 packets of sesame sauce.

Two slabs of wangpo galbi, 746g, marinade soaked to the center

Here are the two pieces of richly seasoned wangpo galbi, 746g total.

Two pieces of marinated wangpo galbi, 746g

Each piece was on the large side, so I stored the second one separately.

One piece of Morakmorak's galbi with the scallion shreds they gave me. The galbi's marinade was sweet without being salty, and even as marinated meat, it wasn't dry at all. The seasoning had soaked all the way through — even my husband gave it a thumbs up!

Frozen galbitang: container size feeds two adults

I brought the galbitang home frozen and haven't cooked it yet, but I wanted to show how substantial the size is. It's not a small container — it's a deep disposable tub. Looks like it'd make a good meal for two adults.

Just thaw at room temperature and boil, and you get a solid galbitang — having one or two in the freezer feels really reassuring. That wraps up my review of buying and tasting meat directly from the Morakmorak butcher shop in Seongpo-dong.
