A close friend recently told me they'd found a great bottle of liquor and wanted to share it over a meal. This time it was Cheongmyeongju and Baeksuhwandongju — clean, mildly sweet yakju (refined rice wine). I started wondering what food would go best with them. Since we were bringing good liquor, I wanted a corkage-free restaurant in Gasan with clean, savory food to match, and that's when I found the newly opened Yukhwang!

Suyuk (boiled pork) hot pot caught my eye on the menu, and it seemed like it would pair well with our drinks, so off we went.

Inside Yukhwang: bright and tidy dining room

Yukhwang has about 7 tables for four, and since it's newly opened, everything from the exterior on in looked clean and fresh.

From what I could see, there were about 7 tables for four inside.

The space is on the compact side, but it looked comfortable for a meal or a small drinking session with 2–4 people. What surprised me was the lighting.

With so many alcohol-pairing dishes on the menu, I expected a somewhat dim atmosphere, but it was actually bright enough to eat comfortably. The bright interior and separate meal menu also made it look like a good lunch spot near Gasan Digital Complex.

Yukhwang's menu and what we ordered

Yukhwang's menu is split into meals, hot pot, and sides. We ordered the small suyuk hot pot (₩48,000) and mungtigi (₩27,000), for a total of ₩75,000.

Besides the hot pot, there were quite a few standalone meal options worth considering for a Gasan Digital Complex lunch. The yukhoe bibimbap and yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw beef soup) at ₩13,000 each especially caught my eye — I'd love to try them as a lunch spot in Gasan Digital Complex.

We didn't order both dishes at once — we added the mungtigi partway through the hot pot to match the liquor we had left.

Bringing traditional Korean liquor to corkage-free Yukhwang in Gasan

Yukhwang was corkage-free at the time of our visit, and as far as I could tell, there wasn't any particular restriction on what type of alcohol you could bring. The Cheongmyeongju and Baeksuhwandongju we brought were clean, mildly sweet traditional yakju.

Bottles of Cheongmyeongju and Baeksuhwandongju brought as corkage

So I wanted to pair them with something clean like suyuk rather than heavily seasoned dishes. Thanks to that, we comfortably drank both bottles we brought at no extra cost.

That said, dedicated glassware wasn't provided. A soju glass was fine for our yakju, but it might be a different story if you're bringing wine.

If you're looking for a corkage-free spot in Gasan, bring whatever glass you need yourself. That's the small tip I picked up from this visit.

Seokbakji and side dishes made fresh daily at Yukhwang

Yukhwang's basic side dishes were seokbakji (young radish kimchi), a vegetable side, and nakji jeotgal (fermented octopus). The seokbakji in particular is said to be made fresh every day, so I had high hopes —

— and it had a crisp, refreshing bite that was great to nibble between spoonfuls of the warm suyuk hot pot. The salty nakji jeotgal and vegetable side also came along, and both went well alongside the mild suyuk.

The water wasn't plain — it was heotgae tea (Japanese raisin tree tea).

Since we'd brought our own drinks that day, small details like this stood out a bit more.

Suyuk hot pot that paired well with Cheongmyeongju

Yukhwang's small suyuk hot pot is ₩48,000. It came with the suyuk in the center, surrounded by chamnamul (wild aster greens), oyster mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and napa cabbage.

Once it started bubbling, we dipped the suyuk lightly in the broth and cooked the vegetables and mushrooms along with it.

I preferred eating the chamnamul, mushrooms, and bean sprouts together rather than just the meat alone. The crisp vegetable texture between bites of soft suyuk made for a more enjoyable meal.

Then, a little of the spicy-tangy sauce on top.

It made my mouth water, so I took a sip of Cheongmyeongju right after.

A glass of Cheongmyeongju sipped with the hot pot

The yakju's subtle sweetness followed nicely after the mild suyuk, and it paired quite well with the drinks we'd brought.

The broth was gomtang-based, clean and mild at first.

As we kept simmering the cabbage and mushrooms, the vegetable stock mixed in and added more depth. Rather than being rich from the start, it was a hot pot that deepened in flavor gradually as we ate.

The kalguksu noodle course: more generous than expected

Yukhwang's suyuk hot pot includes a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) serving. Honestly, I expected the noodle serving in a hot pot to be just a plate of noodles.

But no — along with the kalguksu came another round of chamnamul, mushrooms, and vegetables. Adding it all to the remaining broth felt like starting the hot pot fresh again.

One ₩48,000 suyuk hot pot took us from suyuk and vegetables all the way to kalguksu — quite filling for two people.

If I had to pick the one thing about this meal that most surprised me, it's this kalguksu portion.

Mungtigi at 27,000 won with the last of the yakju

After the kalguksu, we were already pretty full. But there was still a bit of Cheongmyeongju and Baeksuhwandongju left. Deciding what to have as a final pairing, we added mungtigi (raw beef slices) at ₩27,000.

It came laid out wide on the plate, and each slice was fairly thick.

Dipped lightly in sesame oil and sauce, the mild beef gained a nutty, savory depth, and a sip of yakju right after refreshed the palate.

As we ate, I got curious about which cut is used for yukhoe (raw beef) and mungtigi, so I asked the owner directly.

Both yukhoe and mungtigi use eye of round, the same quality and cut, according to the owner. The mungtigi we had that day leaned mild, which made me curious what it would be like as yukhoe.

Yukhoe bibimbap listed on the menu

Especially the ₩13,000 yukhoe bibimbap I'd spotted on the menu — next time, I'd like to try it as a lunch rather than an evening drinking session.

Overall verdict on Yukhwang

Yukhwang, the Gasan Digital Complex restaurant we visited to enjoy some good traditional liquor. The suyuk hot pot was great with chamnamul and mushrooms alongside the mild suyuk, but what stuck with me most was the broth that deepened with more simmering and the kalguksu finale.

What especially surprised me was how the kalguksu, which I expected to be just noodles, came with a generous new round of vegetables and mushrooms.

Being corkage-free let us comfortably enjoy the Cheongmyeongju and Baeksuhwandongju we'd brought, though it was a bit disappointing that no dedicated glassware was available. If the drink calls for a specific glass, bring your own — that's the tip I picked up this time. We had suyuk hot pot and mungtigi for dinner, so next time I'm curious about the lunch menu.

Mungtigi enjoyed alongside the traditional liquor

Since the owner told us that yukhoe and mungtigi both use the same quality eye of round, I've already decided my next order will be the ₩13,000 yukhoe bibimbap.
