While debating what to eat in Yongsan, Hyeonseonine popped into my head. I'd heard the name for years as a famous Yongsan spot but never actually been — so this was finally the visit...!!!!

When we got to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, the place was packed inside, so yeah, it's famous for a reason. Luckily the turnover was pretty fast — we were 4th in line and waited about 10 minutes in the end. Got in quicker than expected, which was nice haha.

The outside has that classic street-cart vibe, but once inside, the space was roomier and more comfortable than I expected. Also saw a lot of foreign customers — guess tteokbokki fans come in every nationality haha.

Being a well-known Yongsan spot, it seems the appeal now crosses borders. Near the entrance there's a wall of photos tracing the place back to its 2004 street-cart days all the way to now. Walking past that history before even eating already built up the anticipation.

We went with the Hyeonseonine Combo Set! Thought about ordering the signature spicy version, but since I can't handle heat well, I played it safe with medium. Even medium turned out to have a decent kick, though. First bite was like 'oh, this is fine' — then a few bites in the spice crept up and caught me off guard haha. Still, the sauce was so good I kept going back for more. What I liked most about Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki is that it doesn't try to dress itself up with extras — it's just the classic tteokbokki flavor and mood you'd picture in your head. The two of us basically had our faces in the food the whole time haha.

What comes in the combo set: two of every fritter

The Hyeonseonine Combo Set isn't just tteokbokki — it also comes with fish cake, homemade mini gimbap (seaweed rice roll), and a generous plate of fritters. The fritters include sweet potato, kimmari (fried seaweed roll), vegetable, mandu (dumpling), and more, and I especially liked that they come two of each kind, perfect for splitting between two people.

This detail matters more than you'd think. If there was just one of each, we'd practically need rock-paper-scissors to decide who gets it — instead we could share evenly, no drama haha.

Overall the portions were generous and the lineup felt well thought out, ideal for two people. And since the tteokbokki sauce is so good, it kept pulling us toward the other dishes too. Guess the sauce really is more than half the battle with tteokbokki haha.
