Hyangnam charcoal rib set for two, 1kg: Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi
In short
Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi Hwaseong Hyangnam is a charcoal-grilled jjokgalbi (pork rib strips) restaurant in Hyangnam 2 District, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Because the wait here is famously long, we put our name down in advance through CatchTable and ordered the 2-person set (1,000g jjokgalbi + seafood sujebi) for 53,900 won, split into two salt, one sauce and one spicy. Rotating between the three flavours kept a full kilo from getting boring, and the seafood sujebi, whose dough you tear in yourself, made a filling finish.

Today I'm bringing you a review of eating jjokgalbi (grilled pork rib strips) in Hyangnam, Hwaseong. While looking for good jjokgalbi spots in Hyangnam, I found Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi Hwaseong Hyangnam branch!
This place is famous for long waits, so instead of just showing up, we booked our waiting spot in advance through CatchTable. It really does get busy during popular hours, so if you're planning a visit, I'd recommend setting up your wait ahead of time. Especially if you love jjokgalbi, this is a place worth trying at least once, so let me go into detail about what we ordered this time!

This jjokgalbi specialty restaurant is located in the Hyangnam 2 District area of Hwaseong. It's actually worth searching for when you're looking for good Korean restaurants in Hwaseong too, since you're not just eating jjokgalbi — you can finish with seafood sujebi (hand-torn dumpling soup), making it easy to cover both meat and a proper meal in one visit.

How long is the wait? Seating and parking
Once we arrived at the front of the store, the Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi sign made it easy to find. There were quite a few people there when we visited, but since we'd already heard the wait could be long, we booked ahead through CatchTable before going.
Since it's a popular restaurant, especially during dinner hours, it's probably a good idea to expect a wait rather than getting seated right away. There was also a separate waiting area set up outside.

It can be pretty uncomfortable when a popular restaurant has a wait but no seating at all, so I was glad this place had a space where you could sit while waiting.

Parking was also available, which made it convenient to visit by car. A lot of people drive to eat in the Hyangnam area, so it was nice not having to stress about parking.

So this seems like a solid option for anyone looking for good-value restaurants in Hyangnam or a place to eat meat there.

What was the atmosphere like inside?
Once inside, there were more tables than I expected, and overall it had that distinct charcoal-grill restaurant vibe. Since this is a place where jjokgalbi is grilled over charcoal, every table was set up for grilling meat, and it definitely felt lively when we visited in the evening.

It felt less like a quiet dining spot and more like a place to visit with friends or a partner for good food and conversation, or for family meals and work dinners.

Jjokgalbi is fun to grill yourself, so meat lovers would probably enjoy this even more.

Our 2-person set, 1,000g order
For the jjokgalbi, you could choose between salt, sauce, or spicy.
- 2-person set (1,000g jjokgalbi + seafood sujebi or nurungji cream jjamppong) ₩53,900
We thought it might be a bit boring to eat just one flavor of jjokgalbi, so we decided to try salt, sauce, and spicy all together.

First, the side dishes came out!

Finally, the jjokgalbi we ordered showed up! Since it's grilled over charcoal, the smoky aroma hit right away once we started grilling it at the table.

We ordered a total of 1,000g, so the portion looked pretty large right from the start.
Salt charcoal-grilled jjokgalbi

We started with the most basic option, salt flavor. If you want to really taste the jjokgalbi itself, salt seems like the safest choice. As it grilled over the charcoal, the outside turned golden brown and that smoky aroma rose off the meat, which paired really well with the jjokgalbi.

Unlike the sauce version, the salt flavor wasn't overwhelming, so it was easy to eat from start to finish. If you want to taste the meat itself, I'd recommend the salt flavor. Especially grilled over charcoal, that subtle smoky aroma made it delicious just dipped in salt, and it was also great paired with the various sauces!
Sauce charcoal-grilled jjokgalbi

Next was the sauce flavor! It was noticeably sweeter and saltier than the salt version.

The sauce had soaked well into the meat, so it already had a good amount of seasoning even eaten on its own, and it went well as a meal with rice or as a drinking snack.

If you usually like sweet galbi sauce, you'd probably enjoy the sauce flavor without any complaints.

If the salt flavor felt clean and simple, the sauce flavor felt a bit bolder and more indulgent. Personally, I liked ordering several flavors and rotating between them the most.
Spicy charcoal-grilled jjokgalbi

And finally, the spicy flavor! It was noticeably spicier than the sauce version, so eating it in between kind of woke my appetite back up.

Going in order from salt to sauce to spicy, the flavor kept changing, so even eating 1,000g total didn't feel repetitive.
If you enjoy spicy food, I'd definitely recommend adding at least one spicy portion. We ordered two salt, one sauce, and one spicy, and I was really glad we split it up into different flavors like that.
Seafood sujebi you tear and add yourself
And along with the jjokgalbi, the seafood sujebi (hand-torn dumpling soup) I'd been secretly looking forward to also arrived. Here, the sujebi doesn't come already finished — they give you the dough directly, so you tear it and add it in yourself.
You just tear off small pieces of dough and drop them into the broth, which turned out to be more fun than I expected haha. Tearing the dough yourself also lets you control the size of each piece, and the chewy texture was great.
After eating jjokgalbi, you can end up feeling a bit greasy from all that meat, but pairing it with the seafood sujebi broth was just right.

With the seafood in it, the broth was on the refreshing side, and it worked well as a meal after the meat. Especially since you tear the dough in yourself, it felt a bit more fun than just adding a regular side dish.

Between the two of us eating jjokgalbi and then the sujebi, we ended up finishing the meal quite full.
