Gueui Station Korean BBQ half-plate set and weekend wait: Sanggu's

In short

Sanggu's Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Gueui Branch is a cast-iron-lid pork belly (samgyeopsal) restaurant in Gwangjin, Seoul, about a 10-minute walk from Gueui Station Exit 3. Arriving just before 6pm on a Saturday, the writer ordered the half-plate set (500g) for 43,000 won with minari and two draft beers, then finished with mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) for 5,000 won instead of rice. Staff grill the pork from start to finish, the self-bar is unlimited, and drinks are cheap at 1,900 won for draft beer and 2,900 won for soju — a solid weekend pick if you can beat the 6pm queue.

Today's post is about a Gueui restaurant that has it all — full staff-grilled service, an unlimited self-bar, a great-value set menu, and cheap drinks. There's really no reason not to go: Sanggu's Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Gueui Branch.

With the set menu you can choose between minari (water celery) or siraegi (dried radish greens), and if you pick minari they give you a generous bundle.

Where is Sanggu's Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Gueui Branch, and is there parking?

Sanggu's Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Gueui Branch is about a 10-minute walk from Gueui Station Exit 3. There's mechanical parking behind the restaurant, but SUVs apparently can't park there, so be sure to call ahead.

I visited just before 6pm on a Saturday, and the restaurant was already packed.

They also offer a lunch special. The minari spicy shabu kalguksu (noodle soup) lets you eat meat, minari, noodles, and fried rice all in one — a real bargain at ₩13,000.

They also have pork belly aged for 36 hours, quick-frozen pork belly made from fresh pork belly, and nostalgic gochujang pork belly.

And here's something for the drinkers — Sanggu Beer's grapefruit draft, lemon draft, and plain draft are all just ₩1,900. Cheap drinks too!

Sanggu's Gueui Branch menu and how long the weekend wait is

Interior of the Gueui branch crowded with customers

By the time we walked in, there was already a wait. If you're planning a weekend visit, come before 6pm.

The full menu is posted on the wall.

Bean sprouts, kimchi, and gosari on the preheated cauldron lid

The cauldron lid is pre-heated so be careful, it's hot. Bean sprouts, kimchi, and gosari (bracken fern) come as standard toppings. Extra side dishes are near the self-bar entrance if you want more.

Table signage describing the set menu composition

We ordered the half-plate set (500g) for ₩43,000. Between aged green onion kimchi, minari, and siraegi, we picked minari.

A bundle of minari chosen with the set menu

We chose two draft beers and fresh pork neck, and that finished off our order. Isn't the set really well put together? The meat alone is quite cheap, and draft beer and minari are included on top of that!!

We ordered the half-plate set (₩43,000), a bowl of rice (₩1,000), and Chamisul Original soju (₩2,900), for a total of ₩46,900.

Basic side dishes: pickled radish, salt, pepper, garlic, and pickled onions

They set out the basic side dishes — pickled radish, salt, pepper and garlic, and pickled onions with a sauce on top that went really well with the meat.

What's in the unlimited self-bar?

At Sanggu's Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Gueui Branch, the self-bar has a separate fridge for wrap vegetables and a separate corner for side dishes. We were seated toward the back, right next to the fresh vegetable fridge.

There was lettuce, perilla leaves, kale, napa cabbage, eggplant, enoki mushrooms, sweet pumpkin, garlic scapes — such a varied lineup that vegetable lovers will be thrilled haha.

The side dishes aren't by the vegetable fridge — you have to go toward the entrance for those. Kimchi, pickled radish, ssamjang (dipping sauce), sliced onion, gosari, bean sprouts, and more, all free to take as much as you want.

The 43,000 won half-plate set: fresh pork belly grilled by the staff

In the meantime, the half-plate set arrived, with a huge pile of minari too.

They oiled the heated cauldron lid and laid the meat down neatly. We'd chosen fresh pork belly, and it was thick.

Such a thoughtful touch — they set up a splash guard before grilling so the oil wouldn't spatter. All this on a cauldron lid already heated to 270°C.

When the pork belly goes on, the fat drips down and cooks the kimchi, bean sprouts, and everything else below it beautifully. And the two draft beers included in the set arrived too.

Soju was ₩2,900 so we ordered an extra bottle to go with the little shot glasses haha.

Staff member grilling pork belly with a splash guard set up

A friendly staff member grilled the meat perfectly for us. The restaurant was full of customers, yet they kept doing this staff-grilled service all the way through!! Such a touching moment.

We also brought over some wrap vegetables and grilling vegetables.

While we went back and forth to the self-bar, they really grilled everything for us the whole time. The pork belly and pork neck are said to be domestic premium 1+ grade Mungyeong Yakdol pork. Having a cold draft beer right next to it...

It doesn't even come pre-seared, and yet they grill it this carefully!! Very fitting for a Gueui restaurant that trains all its staff in grilling. To finish, they threw on a whole bundle of minari and took away the splash guard.

We added the sweet pumpkin, eggplant, and enoki mushrooms a bit later.

How did the fresh pork belly taste?

Taking a bite of the well-cooked pork belly, you could tell it was grilled by a pro — juicy and full of savory flavor.

Dipped lightly in salt or just pepper, the natural savory flavor of the pork belly really comes through.

The bean sprouts and kimchi next to it were well cooked too, so I tried a bite of each.

Perilla leaf wrap topped with minari and gosari

Then I made a big perilla leaf wrap loaded with minari and gosari.

The sweet pumpkin and kimchi, well cooked in the pork fat, were side ingredients just as tasty as the meat itself. You can keep bringing more from the self-bar to grill.

Even just eaten with kimchi, does this really need explaining? It's an irresistible pork belly combo that keeps everyone's chopsticks moving, kids and adults alike.

There's pickled radish too, so of course that deserves a tangy wrap as well.

Finishing with 5,000 won mul-naengmyeon instead of rice

A bowl of mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup)

Finishing with fried rice would've been the natural move, but my son filled up on meat and rice first, so we ordered mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) for ₩5,000 instead. Maybe he got tired of eating meat nonstop? Haha.

Kids don't really eat the pickled onions, so that makes sense too. In moments like this, wrapping the meat with cool, refreshing mul-naengmyeon to finish is honestly a great dessert too haha.

Final wrap with kale, meat, and cold noodles

Made one last big wrap with the remaining piece of kale, took a shot of soju — and there goes my diet again today haha.

Is Sanggu's Gueui Branch worth it? The verdict

As a Gueui restaurant, Sanggu's Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal fills up fast on weekend evenings, with great texture on the domestic pork belly, pork neck, and jowl.

  • Cheap drinks: draft beer ₩1,900, soju ₩2,900
  • Great value set menu with choice of minari, siraegi, and more
  • Free use of the self-bar with wrap vegetables, bean sprouts, kimchi, enoki mushrooms, and more
  • Staff-grilled service from start to finish is a real touching point

Also worth trying: steamed egg, soybean paste stew, cold noodles for dessert, and more.
