Sokcho Jungang Market stall: nurungji squid sundae worth the wait

In short

Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip is a squid sundae and fried snack stall in an alley of Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. Traveling with family, the writer was pulled in by the smell of frying oil, waited in the line, and ate the nurungji (scorched rice) squid sundae standing in the market alley instead of carrying it home, along with an order of tteokbokki. Crisp outside, chewy inside and clean-tasting oil made Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip worth queuing for again.

People say you absolutely must try the tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) at Sokcho Jungang Market — it's practically 'don't come if you're not going to eat this' level, and it really was spicy and incredibly delicious! The inside of the nurungji squid sundae was chewy, moist, and soft, while the outside was crispy and firm, and since they used really fresh oil for the frying, the flavor was light and clean — no greasy or stale taste at all, which was genuinely touching!
