Saturday wait and millefeuille cream bread at Namhansanseong café Sum
In short
Sum is a large bakery café on a hill in Ojeon-ri, Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. On a Saturday at 3pm there was no wait at Sum: only the window seats in the main building were full, while the annex and the parking lot still had plenty of room. The iced Americano was ordinary, but the millefeuille fresh cream bread disappeared fast even on a full stomach.

Recently I found a big, great-vibe bakery café at Namhansanseong. This is my review of Sum, a Namhansanseong café tucked inside Ojeon-ri, on the way from the Namhansanseong rotary toward Buldang-ri.
In this post I'll cover Sum's location and parking, the mood of the main building and annex, drink and bakery prices, what I actually ate, my recommendations, and the weekend seating situation — all from my own visit. Here's the story of what I ate at this place.
How to get to Sum: 800m into Ojeon-ri
Sum is quite a way down from the Namhansanseong rotary, heading toward Gwangju. The drive there runs through a lovely tree tunnel — one of the nicest Namhansanseong drive spots! Your car practically thinks it's an actual tunnel and you end up rolling the windows up, haha.

Even though it's technically just outside Seoul, this Namhansanseong drive gives you a real getaway feeling. Near the entrance to the Ojeon-ri farmers' direct market, you'll spot a sign pointing the way to 'cafe Soom.' From there it's 800m in.

The access road is only slightly steep at the very start. Keep climbing a bit and Sum comes into view on the hill.

When you're hunting for a big café near Namhansanseong, parking hassles can be a dealbreaker, but Sum has a decent amount of parking given its location and layout.
Was there a wait at Sum at 3pm on a Saturday?
I got into Sum with no waiting on a Saturday at 3pm. Most large cafés around Gwangju, Gyeonggi — not just at Namhansanseong — tend to be packed on weekends, but since Sum is tucked pretty deep in and maybe not as well known yet, it felt relaxed.
The window seats in the main building were full, but it wasn't like there was nowhere to sit at all, and the annex had noticeably more open seats plus plenty of parking.
Inside the main building and annex: forest views through full-height windows and a music listening room
The main building has high ceilings and a duplex layout. The first floor has the bakery, café counter, and hall (including outdoor terrace seats), while the second floor is hall seating only. As of late August the rooftop wasn't open for use — you can go up to take in the view and snap photos, but there are no chairs.

Both the first and second floors have full floor-to-ceiling windows, so the forest view from inside felt wonderfully cool and refreshing.

The annex's first floor has a music listening room with a large screen. The second floor is a hall decorated to look like a birch forest, connected to the main building via a mini sky bridge.

Sum drink menu prices (as of August 2026)
Sum's menu helpfully marks its best-selling items — look for the red 'Best' label! Since it's a view café, the rule is one drink per person. Note: decaf +₩1,000 / extra shot +₩1,000.

Sum's bakery display: still plenty of choice at 3:30pm
Behind the counter I could see the baking room where the bread is prepared. It really pumped up my expectations that the bread would be good.
I visited around 3:30pm on a Saturday. Even though plenty of bread had already sold and there were some empty trays, there was still a huge variety left. My eyes were darting everywhere, from savory breads to desserts, haha.

Breads to try at Sum, and what they cost
To save fellow readers from decision paralysis, let me point straight to Sum's signature and best-selling items, haha.
Briquette bread, 7,000 won
The black version of the briquette bread was completely sold out, sigh.
Don't you dare kick that briquette ash around... Have you ever, even once, been a hot-hearted person to someone?
Only the white briquette bread remained, which brought Ahn Do-hyun's poem to mind, haha. It's said to be a combo of red bean, cream, and strawberry jam. 'Don't you dare tear this briquette bread apart carelessly! Have you ever, even once, been a sweet person to someone??!!' Lol — eating this bread, I found myself aiming that line at my husband.

Basil cheese green onion bread and jalapeño long-long bread
The basil cheese scallion bread (BEST), ₩7,000, was so popular that by the time I came back after taking a photo, it was already gone, haha. Jalapeño long-long bread (Best), ₩6,300.

Salt bread
Salt bread ₩3,900, chive cream salt bread ₩5,500.

The almond kouign-amann, ₩4,900, was sold out — so instead here's a photo of the regular kouign-amann, sigh.

Breads your parents will love
Chestnut red bean bread ₩4,500, yakgwa butter bar ₩5,600, and mugwort black sesame bread ₩4,800 all looked appealing too.

Small bakes to go with tea
For tea food, scones ₩3,500 and financiers ₩4,000 also caught my eye.

The popular bread that sold out in front of me
Right in front of me, the millefeuille cream bread (₩7,000), double pain au chocolat (₩4,800), and sweet potato cheese bagel (₩4,900) were flying off the shelves.

The slice cakes were selling out fast too — strawberry cream square ₩8,000, black sesame gâteau chocolat ₩9,000.
You can take leftover bread to go, and there's also a microwave for reheating savory breads.

What I ordered at Sum: vanilla bean latte and millefeuille fresh cream bread
I picked from the popular items to order: iced Americano ₩6,500, iced vanilla bean latte ₩8,000, millefeuille cream bread ₩9,000.

My husband ordered the iced vanilla bean latte and gave it a big thumbs up! Great balance of sweetness, bitterness, and smoothness. The iced Americano, honestly, wasn't that memorable — medium acidity with a bit of a burnt edge and not much nutty depth. But paired with the bread loaded with cream, that acidity and burnt note actually worked well together.
The millefeuille cream bread was the real standout.

A generous dusting of sweet powdered sugar, layers of airy, moist, springy millefeuille-style bread texture, plus soft, mellow, sweet cream. This is... a fancy upgraded version of that Cantabile bakery vibe, haha.
Even though I was already full from a full circuit of Namhansanseong restaurants, I demolished the millefeuille cream bread. This place really knows how to bake, haha.
What made Sum worth the drive
In terms of accessibility alone, Sum might be a bit less convenient than cafés near the Namhansanseong rotary, since you have to go deeper into Ojeon-ri.
But in exchange! You get to enjoy the cozy, lush tree-tunnel drive on the way there, the location means it's relatively uncrowded even on weekends, and sitting by the cool floor-to-ceiling windows surrounded by green forest gives you a proper 'I'm really out here on a trip' feeling while enjoying coffee and good bakery items.
On the way back from the café, it's also fun to browse the Ojeon-ri farmers' market, where produce and homemade goods are sold by grandmother- and mother-like farmers who grew and made everything themselves.
