Yongsan tteokbokki after the National Museum of Korea: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and bunsik snack restaurant in an alley off Hangang-daero 39-gil near Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul, carried on from its tent-stall days in front of Yongsan Station. After a day at the National Museum of Korea, the writer stopped in with a child and ordered the mild Hyeonseonine Combo, which arrived as one full spread of tteokbokki, fish cake, sundae (blood sausage), fritters and mini gimbap, and stirring the self-serve fried batter flakes into the tteokbokki sauce was the best part. Hyeonseonine is still busy enough that the line runs from inside to outside, but the taste is exactly as it was.

Hyeonseonine since its tent-stall days by Yongsan Station
Hyeonseonine has been a Yongsan tteokbokki spot that I, my Seoul-native friends, and even my husband have loved ever since it was a tent stall in front of Yongsan Station. I think the area went through some kind of redevelopment and the shop moved to its current location haha.
Anyway, since I was already in Seoul meeting friends and planned a trip to the National Museum of Korea, I went straight to Hyeonseonine right after !! It's been so long ~~~ I kept wondering if the taste would be the same, how big the place would be, all sorts of things running through my imagination lol
(Since it was the weekend, I parked briefly in front of a closed shop before the narrow alley — next time I'll take public transit. Seoul has so many places to go but parking is such a pain..;;;; lol)

How long is the weekend wait at Hyeonseonine?
When I walked in there was no wait — about two tables were open so I skipped checking Catch Table and went straight in — but by the time we were eating, the place was full, with waiting lines forming both inside and outside! Guess that Yongsan tteokbokki-restaurant vibe never fades!

With so many customers, I'll hold off on the dining hall photos for now ;;;;;;; straight to ordering ㅎㅎ can't fall behind, so we ordered the Hyeonseonine Combo!

How ordering works at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch
- Grab a seat first
- Order via the kiosk
- Get your own radish pickles and tableware

Since we got the combo — tteokbokki, fish cake, sundae, fritters, and gimbap (seaweed rice roll) all included — we grabbed radish pickles, salt, soy sauce, and ^^ a huge scoop of fried batter flakes !! Stirring these into the tteokbokki broth is seriously so good !!

As the place filled up and the waiting line started, I noticed families with babies, couples, friends, and even solo diners all coming in !!

What comes in the Hyeonseonine Combo, mild version
At last, the Hyeonseonine Combo appears !!!!! Such a great spread. Everything here is delicious, one by one ㅠㅠㅠㅠ ah, the nostalgia. My 30 years in Seoul.......

You can choose how spicy you want the tteokbokki. Since we came with our little one, we ordered the mild version ㅎㅎ Still delicious. Ahh........

Mini gimbap (bite-size seaweed rice rolls)
The mini gimbap has surprisingly generous fillings and just the right saltiness, so good lol We only meant to order tteokbokki but got the combo — and yep, this is the taste I remembered for the gimbap too!!!!!!!

Fish cake skewers and the fish cake broth
The fish cake broth. Genuinely delicious. Not like the neighborhood fish cake broth you get these days..... Even without eating the fish cake, the broth alone is amazing. Of course I ate all the fish cake too lolol

The fritters (twigim)
The fritters were fried a bit too hard this time, borderline excessive crunch, lol but they're perfect if you dip them in the tteokbokki broth beforehand lol. Ah, is that why they fry them so crispy???

Sundae (Korean blood sausage)
I picked out all the liver so much lol my husband asked why it's all lung and organ here..ㅎㅎ;; Sorry. I ate it all lolololol

Fried batter flakes in the tteokbokki sauce: the signature move
And finally. Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ waaah ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ I'm literally tearing up~~~~~~~

One bite in and yep, this is it!!! lol then straight in with the fried flakes!!

Wow....... this is it...... exactly....... the taste I'd forgotten for years!!!! Yongsan tteokbokki spot Hyeonseonine.. still going strong !!! lol

Tips for eating at Hyeonseonine with a child
When we gave our little one a plate of fried flakes too, she rolled her tteokbokki in it lol her own way of making it even less spicy, and she ate so well.. I debated fifteen times whether to order more tteokbokki lol but gave up because I was way too full ;;;;;;; if there's nothing planned after this, it's honestly a 10-portion takeout situation ㅠㅠ
They're giving out a free slushie or a size-up on the tteokbokki for a Naver photo review, so make sure to do that too!!

Yongsan restaurant Hyeonseonine, see you again ♡ Stuffed to bursting, so now off to N Seoul Tower (they call it Seoul N Tower these days??) to walk it off lol A fun Seoul outing ♡
