Pork belly vs beef galbi at Samstar, a dog-friendly Jeongwang BBQ

In short

Samstar Charcoal Grill is a dog-friendly charcoal BBQ restaurant in the old Sihwa Hospital commercial district in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi. Two 170g servings of Paldo samgyeopsal (pork belly) and one serving of beef galbi came with 6 kinds of sauce, low-temperature aged mukeunji (aged kimchi) and blue crab doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). Order the samgyeopsal at Samstar Charcoal Grill for a rich, hearty meal, or the beef galbi for a cleaner, lighter taste.

Can you bring your dog to Samstar Charcoal Grill?

Today I visited "Samstar Charcoal Grill," a well-known restaurant in the old Sihwa Hospital commercial district that's easy to reach for anyone visiting Jeongwang-dong or Oido. I was actually visiting Oido with my dog, so being able to bring her along was such a relief! Of course, there are a few things to check before bringing your dog.

  • ✅ Small, non-barking dogs only
  • ✅ Stroller / carrier required

Soju and beer for 2,500 won, charcoal galbi for 13,000 won from 5 to 6 pm

A few tips for Jeongwang's Samstar Charcoal Grill:

  • 📝 Soju and beer are 50% off! ₩2,500 per bottle
  • 📝 Charcoal galbi is ₩13,000 from 5-6pm!!

Yep — if you're looking for a spot for a work dinner nearby, this is it. I went on a weekday and there were tons of families as well as office workers.

Walking inside, you get this open, spacious feeling. I timed the photos for when there were fewer people around. The retro-style decor also made it fun to look around.

By the counter there's a waitlist sign-in sheet, Febreze, a baby chair, and aprons.

And inside there's a self-serve bar where you can grab whatever side dishes and sauces you need. Everything was kept fresh, which I really liked.

There are also chargers of every type near the kitchen area — isn't that great? 🙌

You order through a kiosk. ("Need a small plate," "please remove the coals," etc.) — if you need to call staff for anything, you don't even have to raise your voice, just press a button. Super convenient.

I ordered 2 servings of samgyeopsal, 1 serving of beef galbi, and a Coke Zero.

The 6 sauces and side dishes at Samstar Charcoal Grill

They set out the basic side dishes right away.

Plate of 6 different sauces

What caught my eye was this — there are a whopping 6 kinds of sauce. From the top: breadcrumbs / tonkatsu sauce, hairtail jeotgal (salted fish sauce) / ssamjang (soybean paste dip), scallop jeotgal / fresh wasabi. Such an interesting lineup that I took a photo of each one.

Charcoal laid into the grill

They lay down the charcoal. Charcoal, yay~ there's just something about that charcoal flavor.

170g of palndo samgyeopsal for two with mushrooms

Palndo samgyeopsal 170g – 2 servings. Even mushrooms came out generously.

Sorry buddy, you can't have any of this.

When the fatty part comes out, you brush the grill plate with it before laying the meat down. As soon as the pork touches the charcoal grill, the surface browns up nicely and that delicious smell rises up.

Samgyeopsal grilled to a golden brown

Made with top-grade domestic pork belly, it had just the right thickness — crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.

Grill topped with low-temperature aged mukeunji

The real kick: low-temperature aged mukeunji (aged kimchi)

The real highlight of Jeongwang's Samstar Charcoal Grill is this kimchi!!!!!!!!!!! 💯 EVERYTHING IS DOMESTIC 💯 Grilling the low-temperature aged mukeunji and eating it with the samgyeopsal is basically medicine... in the best way. The aged kimchi was genuinely delicious. I had it both grilled and straight from the side dish, and it paired so well with the meat!

There were so many side dishes to go with the meal that my chopsticks stayed busy.

Blue crab doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), too

Jeongwang's Samstar Charcoal Grill also comes with blue crab doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). It has a whole crab in it, so the broth was extra refreshing. The tofu chunks were generous and the vegetables plentiful — it had that clean, hangover-curing feeling even though I hadn't been drinking!!

What does the beef galbi taste like?

Sorry Mom, I'm going to enjoy some beef too.

Next up, beef please. I wanted pork, I wanted beef galbi, I wanted it all — so in the end I just ordered both.

Look at that beef galbi color~~ 🥩🥩

Beef galbi needs a different grill plate than samgyeopsal, so they swap it out. And you know how it goes with beef galbi — rather than leaving it on the grill too long, you cook it just right to keep the juices in, then eat it right away.

Samgyeopsal or beef galbi — which should you order?

The more you chewed, the more the rich beef flavor and juices spread through — so delicious. I personally liked it best topped with just a bit of onion for a clean taste. If you want something more savory and filling with variety, go for 🔥samgyeopsal; if you want something cleaner and lighter, go for 🔥beef galbi. 😋 Though honestly, having both is even better 😋

I had a hearty dinner with my dog at Samstar Charcoal Grill in Jeongwang-dong. The smoky charcoal flavor and that standout kimchi made this place special — if you're looking for a dog-friendly Korean BBQ restaurant in Jeongwang-dong, give *Samstar Charcoal Grill* a try 📝
