I'd only heard about this Gangneung restaurant by word of mouth, so during my Gangneung trip I finally went to check out Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu.

How long is the wait at Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu at 11:30am?

We got lucky at this Gangneung sundubu (soft tofu) restaurant — only about 10 minutes of waiting before we got seated. We arrived around 11:30am, haha!!

One whole wall was lined with clippings of the restaurant's TV appearances. Having been featured that much on broadcast alone feels like a certification of being a real Gangneung must-visit.

Korean Master Chef plaque and TV appearance clippings

Out front there's a big master chef plaque hanging up, which really raised my expectations. Being a Korean Master Chef (대한민국조리명인) certainly gives you more confidence in the food.

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu menu and prices

The menu is split into just two signature dishes plus two dishes selected by Gangneung city — everything else is sides.

Chodang Myeongpum table, ₩25,000 per person (2-person minimum). It seemed like everyone was ordering the Chodang Myeongpum table instead of the plain Chodang tofu table — no one wants to miss out on the seasoned braised pollock.

Sign describing the Chodang Myeongpum table and side dishes

Since we're meat lovers, we added a bossam (boiled pork) on top. We thought about adding half a block of tofu too, but the portions were already huge, so we skipped it.

What comes with the Chodang Myeongpum set for two, plus extra suyuk

The Chodang Myeongpum table set: sundubu jjigae + tofu samhap + braised pollock + side dishes. The dishes came out really fast, which was great — with such a long waiting line, they must be cooking on a constant rotation to keep up.

Full Chodang Myeongpum table set for two

The two of us ordered the signature Myeongpum table for two and added bossam on top, so we ate a real feast. Once the table was set, the spread of side dishes was as colorful and tidy as a full-course Korean set meal.

Side dishes including mung bean jelly salad and seaweed salad

The cheongpomuk (mung bean jelly) salad, seaweed salad, sautéed mushrooms, and kimchi were all completely to our taste. Side dishes are refillable, so eat as much as you like.

Suyuk, tofu samhap and perilla leaf wraps

The bossam had no gamey smell at all, and was moist and tender. The lean-to-fat ratio was just right, savory with every bite. Adding an extra order was such a good call!

It was delicious even just dipped lightly in salted shrimp.

Two large pieces of plain tofu

Two big pieces of firm, clean-tasting plain tofu also came out. Soft and good.

Wrapping tofu and bossam in a perilla leaf, then adding the spicy-sweet gajami sikhae (fermented flounder) and chives — that combination was the best.

Sundubu hot pot simmered at the table

The sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) simmers away right at the table. It comes topped with chives, mushrooms, and chili flakes.

The longer it simmers, the spicier it gets, and the broth was genuinely refreshing and deep. Scooping up a big spoonful of the soft tofu, it was so silky and soft.

Seasoned grilled kodari (half-dried pollock)

The seasoned braised pollock arrives sizzling on a hot griddle. The flesh was plump and easy to pick apart with chopsticks.

The sauce wasn't too sweet and had just the right amount of spice — perfect with rice. I think I'm going to gain so much weight on this Gangneung trip...

Coke served after the meal

After finishing everything, a cold Coke to wash it all down!

Is Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu worth it? Final verdict

Everything at Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu was clean and light-tasting, so even after eating a full meal my stomach felt totally comfortable. It really felt like eating wholesome Gangwon-style food.

With the two of us adding bossam on top, the portions were huge and completely satisfying. I'd recommend stopping by here if you're bringing your parents in Gangneung or want a proper full Chodang sundubu spread.
