Dongtan weekday kalguksu lunch with unasked broth refills: Deungchon
In short
Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is a shabu kalguksu (hot pot with knife-cut noodles) restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Gran Passage Green Zone, directly across from Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a weekday lunch visit with a friend, two servings of clear mushroom kalguksu plus extra shabu beef came with broth the staff refilled before anyone had to ask, and the meal ended with fried rice cooked down to a crisp scorched layer. Even on a full stomach, the whole pot got finished.

"I'm full, so why do I keep eating?"
That's the kind of lunch this was — a thought I hadn't had in a while.
Honestly, there are plenty of good shabu-shabu places around. But finding one where the kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) is also great, and you end up scraping the fried rice bowl clean at the end — that's rarer than you'd think.
A while back, I went with a friend to Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch for lunch near Dongtan Lake Park.

To cut to the conclusion: this is a place I'd want to return to whenever the seasons are changing and I crave warm broth, when looking for a family dinner spot, or when I just want a filling, low-effort meal.

Where Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is, and where to park
The address is 9 Dongtan-daero 5-gil, Dongtan-gu, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, 2004-2005, 2F Gran Passage Green Zone, South Korea. It's on the 2nd floor of the Green Zone in the Gran Passage building, right in front of Dongtan Lake Park.
Since the building has a CGV theater, it wasn't hard to find, and there's underground parking too, which made the visit easy. Parking runs from B1 to B3, and it's free if you register your car after eating.

What weekday lunch feels like at Deungchon Gran Passage
We visited during weekday lunch hours. It was pretty busy, but luckily we got seated right away with no wait.

Office workers from nearby, families, and older customers were all eating there — a real mix of people, which made me think this is a menu anyone can enjoy comfortably, regardless of age.
The order: clear mushroom kalguksu for two plus extra shabu beef
We ordered two servings of clear mushroom kalguksu and added shabu beef.

With mornings and evenings getting cooler lately, I keep craving warm broth, and this was exactly the right menu for that.

A mushroom shabu-shabu pot loaded from the start
Once the broth started boiling, we put in the mushrooms and minari (water dropwort) first. The savory broth with mushroom aroma added on top made for a clean yet deep flavor.
Above all, the portions were more generous than I expected.

Plenty of mushrooms and a generous helping of vegetables meant we kept scooping things out to eat, which was fun. Isn't the real charm of shabu-shabu getting to eat lots of vegetables? Meat and vegetables both — it felt like a genuinely healthy meal, which put my mind at ease.
What impressed me was that whenever the broth ran low, the staff noticed and refilled it before we even had to ask. A small thing, but you can really feel the difference in service in details like that.
Why the kalguksu noodles are the part you can't skip
After enjoying the shabu-shabu for a while, it was time for the kalguksu. Even though we were already pretty full, there was no skipping it.
The noodles, simmered fully in the broth, were chewy through and through. Dipping the noodles into broth that had absorbed all the savoriness of the mushrooms and meat, I understood why Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu has been loved for so long. It was the kind of flavor that had us spooning up the broth again and again.
The real highlight: scorched-rice fried rice

Personally, the star of the day was the fried rice. After finishing the kalguksu, the staff made it in the kitchen and brought it out for us.
It came with a slightly crispy, browned bit (nurungji) mixed in, and that nutty flavor was really good. Even though we thought we were full, our spoons kept going back for more. Paired with crunchy geotjeori (fresh kimchi), the combo was unbeatable.

"Just one more bite" — and before we knew it, the bowl was empty. Haha.

It's a flavor kids can eat comfortably too, so I think it'd work well as a family dinner spot.
Final thoughts on this Dongtan Lake Park lunch
When the seasons change, hot broth really is the best. Warming up with mushroom shabu-shabu, filling up with chewy kalguksu, and finishing with nutty fried rice at the end.
If you're looking for a filling meal near Dongtan Lake Park, Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is worth a visit. I think I'll go back next time I'm craving warm broth.
