Late-night Korean restaurant in Gonjiam open till 10pm: Oneuldo Utja
In short
Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a pork duruchigi (stir-fried pork) and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, near Gonjiam, and it stays open until 22:00 on weekdays, so a late dinner after overtime is still possible. The order was pork duruchigi for two at 25,000 won with two sotbap (hot-pot rice) and a jumbo rolled egg at 10,000 won, and the suhyangmi sotbap was good enough that the writer's mother called the rice truly delicious. With banchan, seaweed soup and rice refills at the self-serve bar, Oneuldo Utja Chowol makes a filling meal for anyone eating late in Chowol-eup.

Today I'm introducing Oneuldo Utja Chowol, a Gonjiam-area restaurant famous for delicious pork duruchigi (stir-fried pork) and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew)!

Open until 10pm: a Gonjiam restaurant for dinner after overtime
Oneuldo Utja Chowol uses aged kimchi and fresh raw meat, so the pork duruchigi and kimchi jjigae are genuinely delicious 🥰 Since they're open until the slightly late hour of 22:00, I've actually gone here several times after working overtime.

Where is Oneuldo Utja Chowol?
Oneuldo Utja is located in Chowol-eup, but it's only a 5-minute drive from Gonjiam IC, so it can honestly be called a Chowol-eup spot and a Gonjiam spot at the same time! It's also about a 5-minute drive from Chowol Station. Both Gonjiam and Chowol locals can get here easily for a meal 😊

We ordered the pork duruchigi for two, two sotbap, and a jumbo rolled egg!

Banchan spread and the self-serve bar
The basic side dishes were things that go well with kimchi jjigae or duruchigi — dried radish, vegetables, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and pickled garlic 🥒 We also got lettuce for wrapping the duruchigi. It wasn't a flashy spread with tons of varieties, but the banchan were well chosen to match the main dish 👍 I actually liked that it was a composition that blended in naturally without overshadowing the flavor of the main dish.

If any banchan runs low, you can just grab more from the self-serve bar 👍 You can also get warm seaweed soup there! The soup was rich and deep, pairing really well with the duruchigi. Since the seasoning on the pork duruchigi and the kimchi jjigae broth are so good that rice just disappears, it was great that rice refills were available too 🍚

Pork duruchigi for two: the deep flavor of aged kimchi
The moment our pork duruchigi arrived, its hearty presentation caught my eye 😊 Big chunks of meat, well-fermented kimchi, crunchy bean sprouts, and a mountain of shredded scallions all came together looking incredibly appetizing 🍲

Along with the big chunks of meat, well-aged kimchi was used, giving that distinct deep, rich kimchi flavor. The umami from the aged kimchi kept me reaching for more! It felt like eating a truly satisfying meal built around aged kimchi 🫶

Suhyangmi sotbap and the jumbo rolled egg
The sotbap (hot pot rice) is made with suhyangmi rice, so the rice itself had a lovely nutty aroma and subtle sweetness. The grains were cooked glossy and looked delicious 🍚 Even my mother tried the rice and said it was truly delicious 👍

The rolled egg came out truly jumbo-sized, so it looked generous from the first glance. It was made thick and large, so there was never a shortage to pair with the rice 🍳 The combination of duruchigi and rolled egg really is hard to get wrong 😊
