▶️ Opens at 8am & has a large dedicated parking lot ▶️ Ultimate nutty flavor: live abalone porridge cooked in a pressure cooker to order, 1:1 ▶️ A hearty haenyeo table piled with fresh seafood and grilled flounder
It's honestly kind of hard to find a good breakfast spot when you're traveling in Gangneung. I wanted something that wouldn't be too heavy on the stomach but would still feel like a proper vacation meal — and this trip, I found an absolute gem. I've already promised myself I'll come back here with my parents and family next time we're in Gangneung. Here's my honest review.
Where is Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, and is there parking?
Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village (강릉전복해녀마을) is located at 286-1 Haean-ro, Building B, 1st-2nd floor, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, inside the Solhyang food town right behind Gangneung Saint John's Hotel. It's open from 08:00 to 15:30 and closed every Tuesday.

Since it's inside a complex, it was really easy to find, and I was very happy with how spacious the parking lot was. It's about a 10-minute walk from Shilla Monogram, and since parking isn't a worry here, it also seems like a great option even if you're staying at Seamarq Hotel or Skybay Hotel.
Honestly, I think I prefer Jeonbok Haenyeo Village over hotel breakfast! Breakfast at Shilla Monogram is ₩58,000 per person. Here, ₩25,000 per person gets you a delicious, easy-on-the-stomach breakfast without overeating. Totally satisfying for Gangneung breakfast, brunch, or even lunch!
What comes with the 25,000-won haenyeo table and abalone porridge?
What I ordered at Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village was the pressure-cooker abalone porridge + haenyeo table set, ₩25,000 per person. Before the porridge arrives, 12 or more seafood side dishes are laid out in an impressive spread.

The porridge was great, but what really made me gasp was the 'haenyeo table' set out before it. There are literally 12+ seafood side dishes arranged beautifully. It's not a fixed menu — apparently the lineup changes slightly day to day depending on what fresh seasonal ingredients come in from the sea.

How fresh is the seafood on the haenyeo table?
Sea cucumber, sea squirt, raw abalone, gorae (a type of seaweed), kelp, and more come out, and the cleaning was so thorough that everything was truly fresh. The oceanic flavor was alive, but any fishy or off smell was completely gone.
Grilled flounder: crisp outside, tender inside
The grilled flounder came out beautifully browned and so nutty in flavor... I was so absorbed in picking at it that by the end there was literally nothing left but bones 🤣
Tender whelk (bai top shell) side dish
This was a complimentary whelk dish I got for participating in a Naver review event — the texture was so chewy that I'd recommend making sure to try it if you get the chance!

The abalone mulhoe (cold raw seafood soup) and the cold jeyuk (pork) wrapped in chive pancake weren't fishy at all — I really enjoyed them.
Live abalone porridge boiled to order, for 2 people or more
At Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, the pressure-cooker abalone porridge is apparently started fresh in the pressure cooker only after your table orders it — cooked for that table alone. Because it takes so much care, it's only available for orders of 2 or more.
Usually when you go to a porridge restaurant, you often get a portion ladled out from a big batch made ahead of time, right? Because this one is cooked quickly at high heat in a pressure cooker, the distinctive umami and deep flavor of the abalone really comes through intensely. As it turns out, they never use frozen abalone — only live abalone (13 per kg-size grade), and they use actual haenyeo (female divers) cooking recipes.
Some people can't eat abalone porridge because of the slightly bitter or fishy taste from the abalone innards, right? Here, there's not even 0.1% of a fishy taste. There's a gentle whiff of nutty sesame oil, and a rich, smooth flavor spreads through your mouth... the joy of finding a truly great restaurant in Gangneung..!! My all-time favorite abalone porridge place..! Definitely coming back!

Cleared the bowl!! Want to eat it again...
The café-like second floor, haenyeo display downstairs and high chairs
Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village has a 1st and 2nd floor, and the 2nd floor is so~~ pretty!

The sunlight pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling windows was lovely, and the interior was so clean that for a moment I felt like I'd wandered into a trendy Gangneung café. From the delicious food to the satisfaction of a pretty space, you could feel that every detail had been carefully thought through.

On the first floor, there's an introduction to the haenyeo divers along with some lovely artwork. Thanks to the hard work of the haenyeo, I got to eat so well! ✅️ There are also baby chairs available.
Final verdict: the best meal of this Gangneung trip
Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village isn't just a place that sells a bowl of abalone porridge — it feels like being properly hosted with a full table of hospitality. It's gentle on the stomach and generous in portion, so whether you're looking for Gangneung breakfast, bringing your parents on a family trip, or looking for a nourishing meal on a date, this is a genuine crowd-pleaser that everyone will love 200%. It was the most memorable spot from this Gangneung trip, and I'm 1,000% planning to come back next time I'm in Gangneung!
