This day, Hongchil and I were hunting for a good kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) place near Suwon Station and stumbled onto Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, a 25-year-old old-school Suwon favorite!
Daseon Kalguksu has even been on TV as a top kalguksu spot in Suwon, with waits even on weekdays, and I'd heard it's also a popular Suwon date restaurant — so I was curious and went to check it out for this honest review.

Is there really no wait at 5pm, right after break time?

We arrived at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, the most famous kalguksu place near Suwon Station. The weather was nice, so the doors were open like an outdoor pojangmacha (street tent bar), adding to the Suwon Station night-market vibe.

The tables were set up neatly, and worried about a wait, we timed our visit for right when break time ended at 5pm.

As soon as we sat down, there were already tons of customers — some picking up takeout, some dining solo, some with groups, some on dates.

There's usually a huge wait, but we got lucky and were seated right away. Plenty of people were also picking up takeout orders.
Daseon Kalguksu menu and free side dishes

A clean menu board with all the options. I debated the kal-nakji (noodle soup with octopus) or stir-fried octopus, but decided to start with the basic classics to try a bit of everything.

The complimentary barley rice with radish salad, next to the gochujang (red chili paste) — the radish salad and gochujang combo was a perfect match.
The basic test of any good kalguksu place is the kimchi, and the fresh geotjeori (quick kimchi) here passed with flying colors!

But the real kicker was the minced pickled chili tucked off to the side!! Sour, sweet, and spicy all at once — perfect for waking up your appetite.

Seafood and green onion pancake, 18,000 won: packed with squid
Seafood pancake (₩18,000). It came out faster than expected. Daseon is known for its kalguksu, but I'd heard the other menu items are also excellent, so I really wanted to try this seafood pancake.
It arrived big, crispy on the outside and moist inside — visually, it couldn't miss.

Hongchil diligently cut it up for us (not telling you he'd already eaten half before that...).

The pancake was fried up nice and crispy, and a bite with the pickled chili was another huge hit. Didn't want the soy dipping sauce to feel left out, so we dipped a bit of that in too (chili wins though).

Packed with squid, crispy yet tender — if I hadn't been on the clock I definitely would've ordered a few bottles of soju, sniff.

Kalguksu set meal, 15,000 won: noodles plus boiled pork
Kalguksu set meal (₩15,000). You have to order this! It's a premium set that comes with both kalguksu and boiled pork (suyuk), so you get two dishes in one.
A classic kalguksu with refreshing clams — Daseon's original menu item done right. The broth was so clean and refreshing.
And get this — this is a single serving. Daseon is known for generous portions and great taste, and the amount really was huge!
The noodles had no floury smell and were soft and moist, so they went down easily!

The bossam (boiled pork) that comes with the kalguksu set — it had a subtle hint of medicinal herbs in the flavor. You could tell just from the color, right?

No off smell, thick cuts of meat that were still tender enough to eat easily even in large pieces. I personally love this herbal note in boiled pork, so this was an absolute favorite.

Wrap a piece neatly in the geotjeori kimchi and it's pure bliss.
We ate this whole hearty spread, but it wasn't over yet.

Half-and-half dumplings, 8,000 won: kimchi vs. meat filling
Half-and-half dumplings (₩8,000). Half kimchi dumplings, half meat dumplings, and I was surprised at how huge they were.
Cute leaf-shaped, plump, large steamed dumplings with thin wrappers and a ton of filling packed inside.

Kimchi dumplings first! Thin, chewy skin packed with meat and kimchi — a texture genius, and I'm firmly Team Kimchi Dumpling.

Hongchil, our resident meat-dumpling connoisseur, leaned toward the meat dumplings. As always, our tastes are exact opposites (which is why he always ends up with my chicken drumsticks too...).

We left Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, the beloved kalguksu spot near Suwon Station, completely stuffed.
Who is Daseon Kalguksu best for?
If you're near Suwon Station looking for a solid, satisfying meal for solo dining or lunch, Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is the spot. It even doubles as a Korean-style pub in the evening where you can enjoy a drink with your meal — highly recommend it for a Suwon date course.
