Suwon Station dumpling soup with jumbo mandu: Daseon Kalguksu
In short
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant a short walk from Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. A lunchtime visit at Daseon Kalguksu meant a wait in line, then mandu-guk (dumpling soup) with steamed jumbo dumplings and rice cakes in a clean broth, alongside stir-fried octopus with big, springy pieces. There is no reservation app, but the tables turn over fast, so arriving slightly off peak keeps the line short.

Suwon Station kalguksu spot Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch. As mornings and evenings get noticeably chillier these days, I keep craving warm soup dishes! I went to Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch near Suwon Station, which has been getting a lot of buzz — office workers and Suwon travelers alike line up for it, so it's earned its reputation 👏
Suwon Station kalguksu spot Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch — from the menu to my visit review, here's today's post.
Where is Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, and is there parking?

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is located in a spot that's very convenient to reach on foot from Suwon Station. You can walk from Exit 8, and there are plenty of nearby bus stops, so getting there on foot or by public transit is easiest. Since the area around Suwon is pretty busy, parking support is limited! But the surroundings near Suwon Station are so congested anyway that I don't usually drive there, so it didn't matter to me.
How long is the lunch wait at Daseon Kalguksu, and is there a reservation app?

I visited right at lunchtime, and sure enough, true to its reputation as a place you line up for, the energy was intense.. See the waiting line? 🔥 They don't run reservation apps like Tabling or CatchTable — it's line up and take a seat when one opens up, which is the defining feature —

If you visit at lunchtime, you can pretty much count on waiting in line. At opening time, or a bit later past the lunch rush, the line is noticeably shorter!

And the inside was completely full too.. 🤣 The one bit of good news for those waiting in line is that turnover is fairly quick, so your turn comes around faster than you'd expect! It really depends on timing though —
What's on the menu at Daseon Kalguksu

As a kalguksu specialist, Daseon Kalguksu has a wide range of noodle dishes! The signature menu is Daseon Kal-nakji, which unlike the usual milky white kalguksu broth, comes in a spicy red broth with octopus. It's only orderable from 2 servings though, so solo diners should go for kalguksu, jang kalguksu, mandu kalguksu, or bibim kalguksu instead!

If you're planning to drink alcohol with your meal, I'd also recommend checking out the set meal 👀 It comes with boiled pork, stir-fried octopus, pajeon, clam soup and more, and it's ₩3,000 cheaper than ordering everything separately — great value!
That day, we ordered stir-fried octopus to spice up our appetite and mandu-guk to warm us up from the inside :)
Side dishes and barley rice served with every meal

Every table has gochujang, pepper, and spicy peppers, so you can adjust the seasoning to your taste while eating kalguksu!

The basic side dishes are kimchi and mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad), classic sides that go so well with kalguksu! Honestly, if the kalguksu itself is good, even just kimchi alone is enough to make the meal delicious haha.

Barley rice comes standard with any menu order — adding the mu-saengchae from earlier on top to your taste makes it even tastier~

A perfect little appetite-opener before the main dishes arrive~
Mandu-guk: steamed jumbo dumplings and rice cakes in a clean broth

Look at that visual with the big, generous dumplings packed in. Not just regular dumplings either — these are steamed jumbo mandu 🥟

I tasted a spoonful of the broth first and — yes, this is it 👏 There's whisked egg in there too, so it's savory, and the broth is definitely clean tasting :) Broth lovers, I basically picked up the bowl and drank it straight down lol.

The dumplings were packed full inside and so substantial that just one was filling enough on its own 👍 Plus there were rice cakes mixed in too, so I was genuinely stuffed!
Stir-fried octopus: big, springy pieces in spicy sauce

Just look at the visual on this spicy stir-fried octopus~ Stir-fried tight with no excess liquid — I was totally into it 😎

Best of all was that signature octopus texture! It wasn't overcooked, so it wasn't tough — the springy, chewy bite was very much alive and I loved it. Sometimes when you order stir-fried octopus at other places the octopus is skimpy 🤣, but here the pieces were huge and plump..👍

It wasn't just spicy — there was a satisfying savory depth that made you want more, so it was great mixed with rice in the concentrated sauce, and pairing it with the mandu-guk gave a nice contrast between the spice and the warm broth :)

If you're craving a proper lunch near Suwon Station, or spicy stir-fried octopus, or hot kalguksu, give Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch a visit :)
