I found a proper Japanese-style spot near Suwon Station serving premium tonkatsu and mazesoba! It's just a 10-minute walk from Suwon Station, so it's really easy to get to. They use only domestic sow pork aged over 200 hours, follow a same-day-use policy for ingredients, and fry everything to order in clean oil — let me tell you about my visit to Gohobi Katsu (고호비카츠), a Suwon Station favorite!

Bar seats only at Gohobi Katsu: how is it for solo dining?

Gohobi Katsu only has bar-style tables, which makes it an ideal spot for solo diners! It's also run with an open kitchen, so I could watch the owner cook everything cleanly with my own eyes, which built even more trust.

Thanks to the comfortable bar setup, solo diners can eat at ease without feeling rushed. There was another solo diner while I was there too!

Rosu katsu (pork loin), 13,000 won: how crisp and juicy is it?

Rosu katsu (pork loin cutlet), ₩13,000. I ordered their signature menu, the rosu katsu! The lean meat and fat on the loin were in such a perfect ratio that it looked delicious just from the sight of it. They say Gohobi Katsu always fries in clean oil, and maybe that's why the coating was so crispy without a hint of sogginess.

Tasting the loin katsu, the coating was just the right thickness and the crispy-outside-tender-inside balance was spot on, so I really enjoyed it. It's aged 200 hours, and the meat itself was very tender with great flavor. The portion was generous too, so I was very satisfied the whole meal! You can also ask for curry on the side to make it even more filling!

Menchi katsu at 4,000 won a piece: worth adding as a side?

Menchi katsu (1 piece), ₩4,000. Menchi katsu is minced meat and various vegetables coated in breadcrumbs and fried, giving it great savory flavor! I unconsciously expected it to taste like store-bought menchi katsu when I ordered, but the quality was on a completely different level, so I ended up enjoying it even more than expected. Good as a simple side, haha.

Mazesoba set, 13,000 won: noodles first, then rice

Mazesoba set, ₩13,000. I also ordered the mazesoba set to go with the tonkatsu — a noodle dish plus a katsu is such a perfect combo, right 👍🏻 It's the broth-less style where you mix the noodles with a rich sauce and various toppings, and the deep, savory concentrated sauce flavor was so satisfying that I ended up eagerly mixing the included rice with it too.

After eating a good portion of the noodles and then mixing the included rice into the leftover sauce, it really felt like a complete meal, haha. The mazesoba sauce was so savory and good that I was very satisfied. I usually prefer noodles over rice, but this mazesoba sauce felt like it actually went even better with rice!? I really recommend you finish it off with the rice.
