I'd been craving charcoal-grilled eel for a while, so I went back to Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel near Yangjae Station! I've lost count of how many times I've been back to this place haha. They're seriously good at charcoal salt-grilled eel, so I always recommend going before 7pm — after that there's often a wait 😶 Let me review it in detail below!

It's about a 10-minute walk from Yangjae Station, near the road toward Gangnam or Yeoksam. You can park right in front of the restaurant! There's only room for up to 2 cars, so I'd recommend calling ahead before you visit.

Inside the restaurant and the self-serve side dish bar
The inside of Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel is pretty spacious and clean! Even though I went in the early evening, it was already crowded, and looking at the reserved table settings, a lot of people clearly book ahead 🤍

They set out a neat first round of basic side dishes, and if you run out of sauce or banchan, you can use the self-serve bar ☁️

1kg of charcoal salt-grilled eel, grilled for you from start to finish
As always, we ordered 1kg of charcoal salt-grilled eel! 1kg is roughly the standard for 2 people, and if you come with 3 people, a lot of tables order 1.5kg. When they put the eel down, the skin was already glistening ✨

They flip it right away and sprinkle it with bokbunja (black raspberry) salt, grilling it entirely themselves from start to finish ➰ Maybe because the eel is so fresh, it had this clear, glossy sheen. It was also cut thick and cleanly trimmed with no blood spots!

Okay, now the visuals get insane. Look at it grilled golden brown over the charcoal ✨ See how the skin side gets slightly crisped?

They cut it piece by piece and grill even the sides! Since all you have to do is eat, it's incredibly convenient 🪽
Insane... this is the fully cooked eel! Seriously golden brown, crispy outside and tender inside, absolutely insane.

How does the eel at Jangsuchon Pungcheon taste?
What's really great about the eel here is that the outside is sizzling and crispy while the inside stays soft and plump! How is the skin so crispy yet chewy at the same time..💛 The savory flavor is out of control.
You've got to have eel with ginger and geunsam (perilla leaf variety)! Dip generous ginger in the teriyaki sauce, wrap it up with geunsam and lettuce, and it's just so, so good... 🍃

And finally, the eel tail! Because it's thin, it comes out noticeably crispier, almost like a cracker. Really clean and light to finish with 🧡

Mushrooms and rice cake grilled in the leftover eel fat
The mushrooms and rice cake taste best grilled after the eel, right on top of that leftover savory eel fat! They grill the mushrooms one by one and cut them up nicely too 🙌🏻

I don't usually like mushrooms, but why were these so juicy and delicious? Must be from being grilled in the eel fat...🫠

And this rice cake, which I love! Grilled golden in eel fat, it's genuinely delicious... so chewy... dip it in the spicy sauce and it becomes the best tteokkochi (rice cake skewer) ever 😶

Finishing the meal with green onion kimchi stew (jjageuri)
Whenever we come here, we always finish with the green onion kimchi jjigae (stew)! After eating rich, fatty eel you need something spicy — that's just the rule, right? The kimchi jjigae here is genuinely spicy with deep flavor, so I highly recommend it as your closing dish ❤️
When you order the meal, they also give you diced radish kimchi and regular kimchi on the side, plus a bowl of rice is included — it's a really solid set.

Verdict: a family dinner spot near Yangjae Station
