Yum Bbokki in Gwangdeok-dong, Ansan: back after two years

Yum Bbokki is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and Korean snack restaurant on the 1st floor at 61 Gwangdeok-dong-ro, Danwon-gu, Ansan, Gyeonggi. It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 9pm, with last order at 8:30pm.

Today's spot is a tteokbokki favorite in Ansan. I'm not exactly a huge tteokbokki fanatic, but I do get cravings sometimes! So while thinking about where to go, I remembered a place in Ansan I'd eaten at about two years ago and really enjoyed — Yum Bbokki. This is my revisit review.

There are quite a few standing signboards right in front of the shop, so it was easier to find than I expected! I visited at kind of an awkward time — around 4:30pm on a weekend — but there were already a lot of customers. So I found myself walking in like I was in a trance, haha.

How big is Yum Bbokki, and how do you order?

Yum Bbokki is a cozy space with about three 4-seat tables and two 3-seat tables. You order right at the kiosk at the front of the store.

Since the store itself is on the smaller side, way more people seemed to be ordering delivery than eating in.

So this is roughly the size of the place — about three 4-seat tables and two 3-seat tables, a cozy little shop, but it's seriously popular. While I was eating, delivery riders kept coming in nonstop!

There's a kiosk right at the front, so ordering was easy!

What we added to Yum Bbokki's Realistic Set 2

At Yum Bbokki I added sweet cheese potato fries, a small sweet cheese chicken, and a Juicy Cool drink to the Realistic Set 2 (₩13,900). Here's the menu board — there were way more options than I expected.

I was torn about what to order since there were so many things I wanted to try, so I decided to go with a set! Out of those, I picked Realistic Set 2. One small wish — I'd love it if they made a set with tteokbokki, cup rice, and sundae (Korean blood sausage) together!! Anyway, along with Realistic Set 2 I ordered sweet cheese potato fries, a small sweet cheese chicken, and a Juicy Cool.

Realistic Set 2 comes with a serving of tteokbokki, a fried snack set, tuna mayo cup rice, fish cake and more! You can choose the spice level and the type of rice cake. I went medium spice with rice tteok, and the rice tteok was seriously delicious. Super satisfying.

What's on the self-serve bar at Yum Bbokki

Ta-da. Once you order at Yum Bbokki, you head straight to the self-serve bar! It has water cups, small plates, spoons, forks, chopsticks, pickled radish, scissors, disposable gloves, wet wipes and tissues, so feel free to use whatever you need.

Oh, and there's also broth, so I grabbed some like this!

Is the 13,900 won Realistic Set 2 enough for two?

Here's the Realistic Set 2. The lineup is really substantial, right? It's genuinely surprising that this is only ₩13,900. Two people can eat until full, so at about ₩7,500 each, that's a great deal for a full meal, isn't it?

Medium-spice rice tteokbokki with two extra vienna sausages

First up, the tteokbokki. I went medium spice with rice tteok and added two extra orders of vienna sausages. Looks great, doesn't it?

With the two extra orders of vienna sausages, there were about 10 of them in there, so I got to eat sausages to my heart's content. And this rice tteok here is truly a masterstroke. Super chewy, seriously delicious.

What's in Yum Bbokki's fried snack set, and how it tastes

Next, the fried snacks! The fried snack set came with 3 fried fish cakes, 2 kimmari (seaweed rolls), and 1 fried squid — a really solid lineup.

The kimmari was tasty too, but the fried squid was seriously amazing. It especially went so well with the tteokbokki sauce.

Oh, and the fried fish cake was seriously amazing too. So chewy, seriously addictive.

Sweet cheese potato fries and sweet cheese chicken (small)

Yum Bbokki's sweet cheese potato fries are fries topped with sweet cheese powder. They're delicious even when cold, so this was the dish I kept eating until the very end even though I was already full.

This was genuinely delicious. It's great fresh and warm, but it's also delicious even after it's completely cooled down. Even when I was full, the sweet cheese fries were the thing I kept eating until I left.

And this is the small-size sweet cheese chicken. It came with a sauce on the side too.

The chicken was like boneless karaage and it was tasty, but I felt the sweet cheese powder pairs even better with the potato fries. This was good too, though.

Tuna mayo cup rice stirred into the tteokbokki sauce

The tuna mayo cup rice included in Realistic Set 2 was the highlight of the set — mixing in the tteokbokki sauce and topping it with vienna sausages. Next up is the tuna mayo rice bowl, one of my favorites. The look of it is amazing, right?

I mixed it up nice and thoroughly.

It's tasty just as it is, but if you pour tteokbokki sauce over the rice bowl, mix it in well, and top it with vienna sausages, it's genuinely tear-jerkingly good. You have to try it! Another great meal today.
