Pork BBQ restaurant in Sindaebang, Seoul: pork neck set at Wanyuk

I was wondering what to eat for dinner near Sindaebang Station and ended up going for pork at Wanyuk. Personally I think a pork restaurant is only a real winner if it does pork neck well, and after eating the pork neck here I was like, ah, this place actually knows what it's doing haha 🤍 Best of all, the meat came out already grilled, which was so convenient. A pork restaurant where the owner grills the meat for you

At Wanyuk Sindaebang Branch, customers don't grill the meat themselves — the owner grills it off to the side and brings it over. We visited on a weekday evening, and the first thing I noticed walking in was how clean the place was! Since the meat isn't grilled at the table, I also liked that my clothes didn't end up smelling of smoke as much.

There was also a receipt review event. I went straight for the steamed egg haha

What's on the menu at Wanyuk Sindaebang Branch?

Wanyuk's main thing is charcoal-grilled pork. The core menu is charcoal-grilled samgyeopsal (pork belly), charcoal-grilled pork neck, charcoal-grilled jjondeuksal (chewy skirt meat), and charcoal-grilled galmaegisal (skirt meat). They even had pork skin.

There are set menus, so I didn't have to agonize over choosing. I went with the Wanyuk value set that includes pork neck.

There are also plenty of meal-type dishes like stew, steamed egg, naengmyeon (cold noodles), kimchimari guksu (noodles in cold kimchi broth), and charcoal fried rice. Love a place with lots of sides 🤍

There was also a lunch special. Since they open early at 11:30, it seemed like it would get busy at lunch too. Good value! Since it was our first visit, we ordered the Wanyuk value set — pork neck, chewy skirt meat, and stew, which was great for trying a few different cuts at once. We also got beer 🍺 and got the steamed egg through the review event.

The Wanyuk value set comes with pork neck, chewy skirt meat, and stew, and the staff showed us the raw meat before grilling it and bringing it out.

The meat before grilling! They brought it over so we could check it out first. Haha, the shape already looked promising — nice color since it's Korean pork (hanwoo... no wait, hanbon/domestic pork).

The minari (water dropwort), gosari (fernbrake), sukju (mung bean sprouts), and kimchi grilled alongside had great texture.

The meat, now grilled. I'll say it again — the pork neck here comes highly recommended!! I usually try the pork neck before the pork belly whenever I go to a pork restaurant, and this pork neck was genuinely delicious ㅜㅜㅜ

If the pork neck is good at a pork restaurant, I tend to think 'ah, this place really knows how to cook meat.' Pork belly has fat, so it's usually decent no matter what, but with pork neck the flavor and texture of the meat itself matter more. In that sense, Wanyuk's pork neck was quite satisfying. I'd definitely order the pork neck again next time.

Chewy pork with minari (water dropwort) kimchi

And the jjondeuksal (chewy skirt meat)! I also tried the chewy skirt meat that came in the value set — since it was our first visit, the set was good for comparing different cuts. And a combination I really liked: minari. Eating the meat together with minari kimchi added a fragrant note that worked way better than I expected.

That said, my personal top pick is still the pork neck. If you're into specialty cuts, it's worth trying the chewy skirt meat too and finding whichever cut suits your taste.

The doenjang stew was the spicy version, so it was easy to spoon up. Nice to have it included in the set. A good combo for a weekday evening of meat and a beer 🤍

Is Wanyuk Sindaebang Branch worth a visit?

This was a weekday evening visit to Wanyuk in Sindaebang. The place was clean, and above all, having the meat come out already grilled was really convenient. And most importantly, the pork neck was genuinely delicious!!
