Hi, this is Anbang Couple :) While traveling in Gangneung we were hunting for a late brunch spot and kept seeing Gossi's Donghae Makguksu Main Branch pop up on Gangneung food recommendation lists, so we finally went haha. Parking got messy right from the start, but the result was totally worth it~

Where to park at Gossi's when the No. 1 public lot is full

The Gangmun Beach No. 1 public lot right in front of Gossi's was already full at 11am, so we parked instead at the No. 2 public lot next to Gangmun Bridge, behind the restaurant. Both lots give 90 minutes free.

Second-floor window seat with a Gangmun Beach ocean view

Walking in on the first floor of Gossi's, a wall full of celebrity signatures immediately caught my eye. The restaurant was started by first-generation owner Ko Mi-ae in Jeongdongjin and later moved to Gangmun Beach, now run by the second generation — it's also been featured on TV several times.

We were led up to the second floor, which was packed, but got lucky with an ocean-view window seat 🙌

You can tell right away why this place keeps showing up on Gangneung food recommendation lists — the view alone says it all :)

There were baby chairs off to one side, so it looked comfortable for visits with babies too, and ordering was quick and simple through a tablet at the table!

What comes in the 38,000-won set for two?

We ordered the 2-person set (mul-makguksu + spicy sundubu kalguksu + kkamakjang pork) for ₩38,000 and the buckwheat cheese roll cutlet for ₩15,000. The 2-person set is a satisfying combo of two noodle dishes plus boiled pork, and apparently it's the first couple set Gossi's ever introduced. Pretty much perfect for us, Anbang Couple 💑

Looking at the menu, the makguksu category alone had plenty of options — mul-makguksu, bibim-makguksu, Yangyang perilla oil makguksu, pine nut sundubu makguksu — plus sundubu kalguksu, buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll), and kkamakjang pork, so it'd be easy for a group to each pick something different.

The basic side dishes were yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), and pickled radish, and you could refill as needed from the self-serve bar.

How does the mul-makguksu taste? Kelp and soy sauce broth

Gossi's mul-makguksu comes in a broth slow-simmered from kelp and soy sauce, a clear light brown that looked mild rather than sharp — the toppings of julienned cucumber, egg, seaweed flakes, and sesame seeds looked appetizing right away.

One sip in and a cool, savory flavor hits right away~!!

The kelp flavor combined with a touch of sweetness made the broth deep and rich, and when lifted with chopsticks the thin, smooth noodles flowed down — springy, just as you'd expect from house-made noodles.

Spicy sundubu kalguksu: too hot if you avoid spice?

The spicy sundubu kalguksu has a deep-colored broth that looks fiery, but even I, who can't handle spicy food, ate it comfortably — more mildly spicy than truly hot. Chodang sundubu, made with clean East Sea seawater, crumbled softly in the bowl, topped with ground meat, seaweed flakes, and chives for a savory aroma from the first whiff.

With one spoonful the sundubu melts apart, the nutty flavor hitting first, followed by the mild heat.

Add the chewy kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and it's basically sundubu jjigae with noodles thrown in — impossible not to love~! It's earned its reputation as a Gangneung sundubu favorite too.

Kkamakjang boiled pork with fermented pollock sauce

The boiled pork here is kkamakjang pork — pork belly simmered in traditional kkamakjang sauce with 15 ingredients. It pulled apart tender at every layer, no gamey smell, and just melted.

Topped with green onion kimchi and fermented pollock sauce, it got a pungent, tangy kick that was a perfect match.

Buckwheat cheese roll cutlet, 15,000 won, with a cheese pull

Last up: buckwheat cheese roll cutlet, ₩15,000. A rolled pork cutlet stuffed with 100% natural cheese and loin, fried crispy outside with an appetizing golden-brown coating.

The moment we cut it in half, the cheese stretched out in a long pull. Dipped in sauce, the rich cheese, tender loin, and crispy coating all came through at once.

The cut cross-section kind of looked like makchang (grilled beef intestines), which made me laugh to myself 🤣

Are the buckwheat noodles made in advance?

They're house-made and freshly cut right after an order comes in. The mul-makguksu we had had springy noodles too.

When I ate it — and I can't handle spicy food — it wasn't hot, just mildly spicy. Spice tolerance varies by person, so take this as a reference only.

Can you bring a dog to Gossi's?

Yes, pets are seated flexibly on the 3rd floor or in the annex. Indoors, pets must be held or seated in a chair rather than set on the floor, and strollers aren't needed. Large dogs may have trouble getting in on weekends, holidays, or peak season, so it's best to call ahead. This kind of consideration seems to be part of why it's known as a favorite among Gangneung locals.
