Thanon55 started in Seongsu-dong and built a name for itself as a go-to Thai food spot. Among its several branches, there's one the writer keeps coming back to more than any other — Thanon55, Best Western Plus Hotel Sejong branch.
From pork-bone rice noodles to curry rice noodles, they have unusual menu items you don't easily find at a typical rice noodle shop, so this is personally one of my favorite regular spots! 🍜 This time I was craving rice noodles again and went back for weekend lunch. The side dishes served are pickled chili, danmuji (yellow pickled radish), and pickled radish. That pickled chili is genuinely delicious, so be sure to grab some.
When you add extra noodles, they don't come mixed into the soup — instead the bean sprouts and noodles come out separately like this. I personally liked this style because when you're not sure if you want more, it makes it easy to share with a companion!
What do the gamjatang rice noodles taste like?
Thanon55 Sejong branch's signature 'pork-bone rice noodles' (S, ₩13,000) is rice noodles, but the broth base tastes like gamjatang (spicy pork-bone soup), so it has this familiar yet exotic appeal — it's the dish I always order when I come to Thanon55.
The broth is spicy and tangy, the kind of taste that seems perfect for curing a hangover.
There are two big chunks of meat in it too, and the meat is so tender it just falls apart easily.
It's also great dipped in the tangy, salty special soy sauce that comes with the order, and topping it with the pickled chili at your table cuts the richness so it's never too heavy.
The extras like bean sprouts and soft-boiled egg are also generously included!
Curry rice noodles: a heavy coconut cream broth
At Thanon55, the writer's girlfriend's favorite dish is the 'curry rice noodles' (₩13,000).
With coconut cream added, the broth is smooth yet has a spicy, rich umami from the curry base. The broth feels weighty and nutty!
The curry rice noodles had the broth soaked well into every ingredient, so each bite had a deep curry flavor. Tender, chewy meat, crunchy bean sprouts, and moist noodles all came together for a rich texture too! The broth is deep yet clean, pairing so well with the ingredients that you keep going back for more without feeling weighed down — if you like curry, definitely order this.
Is Thanon55 Sejong worth a visit? Final verdict
Overall, the restaurant was clean and the staff were kind, making it easy to enjoy a comfortable meal. The menu ranges from familiar Thai dishes to a few more unusual ones, so there's fun in picking based on your mood.
Accessibility is decent and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, making it a good spot to drop by for lunch or dinner nearby whenever you're craving Thai food. If you're in Sejong and craving good Thai food, I'd recommend giving it a visit at least once 😋
