Aewol solo pork noodles right after break time: Handam Guksu, Jeju
In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a Korean noodle restaurant on Jeju's Aewol café street, where gogi guksu (pork noodle soup) comes with a full-window ocean view. Arriving alone right after break time ended, the writer took a window seat and ate one bowl of gogi guksu — half plain, half with pepper — while the sunset came in over the water. Crunchy bean sprouts, springy thin noodles and a milky broth made Handam Guksu worth a visit, with one regret: not ordering the large bowl.

One of the places you can't skip in Jeju has to be the Aewol café street. It's full of cute shops, pretty cafés, great restaurants, and even Handam Beach right there — such a great area to visit. And since I was in Jeju, there was no way I was skipping gogi guksu (pork noodle soup). I visited a great Aewol lunch spot where you can enjoy pork noodle soup with an ocean view.

Aewol café street parking: which lots get the free hour?
Turns out if you park at Aewol Handam Parking Lot (the Randy's Donuts lot) or Handam Trail Parking Lot, Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch gives you 1 hour free. Classic Aewol café street thing — you really have to check which lot each place supports before you go, haha. There's a small parking area right in front of the restaurant too, but it's pretty tight, so I'd recommend using the lots instead. Just a heads up, Handam Lot 1 and Handam Lot 2 are NOT supported.

I visited right after break time ended, so it wasn't crowded at all. Normally this is a bustling Aewol lunch spot.

Full-window ocean view seats at Handam Guksu: go at sunset
Enjoying pork noodle soup with an ocean view through a full glass window. I grabbed a window seat too. It happened to be right around sunset, so the light coming in was gorgeous.

Menu for solo diners at Handam Guksu, including mala pork noodles
I ordered pork noodle soup. It would've been nice to pair it with the handmade tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) or pork mandu (dumplings), but honestly the cold boiled pork slices tempted me most. Usually solo trips mean solo drinking is totally fair game, but I held back since I worried I'd want to keep drinking once I started, ugh. And here's the surprising part — they also have mala pork noodle soup! Aewol café street gets a ton of Chinese tourists, and this seems like a great menu option for both Koreans who love mala and Chinese visitors alike.

Self-serve sides: kimchi and radish-and-chili pickles
Basic side dishes are self-serve — you just scoop them yourself. There's kimchi and radish-chili pickles that both looked delicious. The sign said the chili peppers were really spicy, so I skipped those!!

How the gogi guksu tastes, and why a little pepper is all it needs
My pork noodle soup arrived. It's already seasoned, so they recommend just adding a little pepper. Pepper, chili powder, and salt are all set out on the table.

Maybe because the sunset was approaching, I really wanted to get a photo with the ocean view in the background — but if I focused on the noodles, the ocean view disappeared, and if I focused on the ocean, the food went dark. Ugh.

There were bean sprouts, green onion, and sesame seeds, with the pork neatly arranged on top of the noodle soup. I like to enjoy the broth's original flavor without adding extra salt or pepper, but paired with kimchi or pickles.

Maybe because of the bean sprouts, there was this crunchy texture with every bite that made the pork noodle soup feel even richer. And the noodles themselves were unusually interesting — springy yet thin, which surprised me.

The milky broth really expressed a deep, savory flavor. Right around the point pork noodle soup starts to feel a bit rich, you naturally crave something spicy — the plain chili peppers were supposedly quite hot, but the pickled ones had toned-down heat that hit just right.

Since they recommended adding pepper, I ate about half the bowl plain, then sprinkled pepper on the rest and tried it that way.

By the time I was eating, the sun was starting to set. Enjoying delicious food while taking in gorgeous scenery — doesn't get much better than that.

After the last bite: order the large bowl next time
Once I finished the noodles, that magical urge to order a bowl of rice and mix it into the leftover broth kicked in. The kimchi was so good too — after finishing, I thought maybe I should have ordered the large size, haha. Pork noodle soup is simply unskippable on a Jeju trip, and I had a great meal at this Aewol lunch spot, Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch.
