Aewol pork noodle restaurant with crunchy radish pickles: Handam Guksu

In short

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is an ocean-view pork noodle soup (gogi guksu) restaurant right in front of Handam Beach in Aewol, Jeju. Arriving before 11am on a Monday still meant a wait, and the order was an extra-large rich bone-broth pork noodle soup, extra-large dongchimi bibim noodles and dombe naengsuyuk (sliced boiled pork), with an extra-large upgrade costing 1,000 won each. The crunchy mu-jangajji (pickled radish) side and easy parking make Handam Guksu a solid lunch stop in Aewol.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch: an Aewol pork noodle restaurant with easy parking

Photo from visiting Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch in Jeju Aewol

If you go to Jeju, you have to eat gogi guksu (pork noodle soup), right? Haha. I visited 'Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch,' famous as an Aewol pork noodle restaurant. Besides the restaurant's own parking lot, you can also get 1 hour free parking at Handam Public Parking Lot (Randy's Donuts parking) and Handam Trail parking, so there's no need to worry about parking at all 👍

📍 Don't forget to mention parking when you leave

Is there a wait at Handam Guksu before 11am on a Monday?

Even though I visited early, before 11am on a Monday, there was already a wait. I guess there's a reason it's known as a local Aewol favorite and an Aewol lunch spot.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch boasts an amazing ocean view. Watching the sea outside while eating was truly healing.

Here's the menu board. We ordered extra-large rich bone-broth pork noodle soup, extra-large dongchimi bibim noodles, and dombe naengsuyuk 🙆🏻‍♀️ (extra-large adds ₩1,000)

Side dish spread of kimchi, mu-jangajji, and peppers

The side dishes were kimchi, mu-jangajji (pickled radish), and peppers. The kimchi felt like fresh geotjeori and paired well with the noodles, and the mu-jangajji, which I tried for the first time, was crunchy and sweet-salty and delicious!!

I liked that the self-serve bar was neatly and fully stocked with side dishes.

A large sign displaying ingredient origins

They also had a big, trustworthy sign showing the origin of ingredients — Handam Guksu is truly a local Aewol favorite 👍

Because it's such a popular spot, I saw all kinds of visitors — families, parents with kids, friends, couples! With the full-length windows, the view outside is so pretty.

How does the rich bone-broth pork noodle soup taste?

The rich bone-broth pork noodle soup at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch — the visuals alone were a win 🤩 The noodle thickness and doneness were both great. The broth is a deep pork bone base, but it wasn't too strong, which I liked haha. They put in a lot of meat too, and it just kept going down easy!

Why order one dongchimi bibim noodle bowl too

For the dongchimi bibim noodles, pouring in the dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) that comes with it gives a tangy, sweet, savory broth flavor that was great haha. It pairs perfectly with the rich bone-broth noodle soup! You definitely need to order one!! The bean sprouts and cucumber in the bibim noodles added great texture, and the finely chopped meat mixed in was especially tasty!

Dombe naengsuyuk: wasabi and the house sauce make it

For dombe naengsuyuk (sliced boiled pork), apparently you have to eat dombe pork when you come to Jeju? It was sliced thin and easy to eat in one bite, and the wasabi and secret sauce on the side were the kicker! No unpleasant smell at all, and it paired perfectly with the noodles 👍

Seeing it all together as a full spread makes the combination look even better, right~~~?
